Tinubu’s Government Suspends 4% Import Levy

The Federal Government of Nigeria has suspended the implementation of the additional 4% Free on Board (FOB) import levy recently introduced by the Nigeria Customs Service on all goods entering the country.

The decision comes after widespread criticism from traders and economic experts who argued that the new levy would further increase the cost of living and disrupt business activities across the nation.

According to government sources, the suspension is aimed at allowing room for further review and consultations with relevant stakeholders before any final decision is taken.

Economic analysts say the move will provide relief to traders and the general public, especially at a time when Nigerians are grappling with soaring prices and the rising cost of essential commodities.

Palestinian Babies Dying Before Taking Their First Breath Under Israeli Siege

By Abubakar Bashir Adam Yakasai

In Gaza, the lives of newborns are beginning in fear and tragedy. Even before taking their first breath, many Palestinian babies are dying as a result of Israeli bombardments, blockade, and the collapse of healthcare services.

In just one week, reports confirmed the deaths of seven Palestinian infants—four unborn in their mothers’ wombs and three born but kept in incubators. This humanitarian disaster is directly linked to malnutrition among pregnant women, psychological trauma, and a severe shortage of medicine and medical equipment in hospitals.

Due to Israel’s blockade and restrictions on aid, most hospitals in Gaza are struggling with severe shortages of electricity, fuel, and life-saving machines. Doctors warn that hundreds of infants are at risk of dying if incubators and ventilators lose power.

A United Nations report revealed that nearly 50,000 pregnant women in Gaza lack proper maternal healthcare. The absence of essential nutrients, high stress levels, and overcrowded conditions in refugee shelters are pushing many women into miscarriage or stillbirth.

One displaced mother shared her pain:

“We have no food, no clean water. My body is exhausted. The doctor told me my baby cannot survive because I lack the nutrients to sustain him.”

Infants in Gaza are dying before or shortly after birth—not because their parents don’t love them, but because the blockade denies them the right to life. This ongoing tragedy raises a pressing moral question for the world: the lives of the most vulnerable—newborns—are being cut short every day in Gaza.

10 Years Since the Crane Collapse at the Grand Mosque in Makkah

By Abubakar Bashir Adam Yakasai

Today, Thursday, September 11, 2025, marks ten years since the tragic accident that occurred at the Grand Mosque in Makkah, when a giant construction crane collapsed inside the holy site.

The disaster, which struck at about 5:10 p.m. on September 11, 2015, claimed the lives of 111 people and injured nearly 394 others. It happened just as preparations for that year’s Hajj were underway, with thousands of pilgrims from around the world already gathered in Makkah.

Reports indicated that strong winds and heavy rain triggered the collapse of the crane, compounded by human error in leaving the machine in an unsafe position during severe weather conditions.

The tragedy sparked widespread outrage both in Saudi Arabia and globally. At the time, King Salman ibn Abdulaziz Al Saud ordered an investigation and suspended new contracts with the Binladin Group, the company responsible for the mosque’s expansion project.

Victims of the accident came from 12 different countries. Bangladesh recorded the highest number of fatalities (25), followed by Egypt (23), while most of the injured were from Pakistan (51) and Indonesia (42).

In 2016, Saudi newspapers reported that several individuals, including engineers and workers, were prosecuted for negligence. Later court rulings imposed various penalties, including fines and prison terms for some, while the Saudi Binladin Group was fined 20 million riyals for negligence.

The crane collapse at the Grand Mosque remains one of the most significant disasters of 2015, leaving a painful mark on the memory of Muslims worldwide, particularly pilgrims preparing for Hajj.

33 Years After the Death of Sheikh Abubakar Gumi

By Abubakar Bashir Adam Yakasai

Today marks exactly 33 years since the passing of the renowned Islamic scholar, Sheikh Abubakar Mahmud Gumi. This day reminds Nigerians and the Muslim world of the great contributions he made in spreading knowledge, reforming society, and standing firmly against ignorance both at home and abroad.

Sheikh Gumi, who was born in Gusau, became a towering figure in Islamic scholarship. He combined deep understanding of the Qur’an, Hadith, and jurisprudence, and served as the Chief Imam of the Kaduna Central Mosque. He was widely respected for his sermons, which were delivered with wisdom and calmness, leading many people to embrace the true teachings of Islam.

He was known for his honesty, courage, and clarity in issuing fatwas and giving counsel. Sheikh Gumi consistently urged both leaders and the masses to uphold justice and truth. As a devout scholar and patriot, he was seen as a shield for Islam in Nigeria.

His legacy lives on through his numerous works, books, lectures, and the thousands of students he mentored, many of whom continue to spread his teachings across mosques, schools, and the media.

Sheikh Abubakar Gumi passed away on September 11, 1992, leaving behind a huge vacuum in the hearts of Muslims, especially in Nigeria. Yet, his memory and teachings remain deeply rooted in the minds of those who benefited from his wisdom.

Today, 33 years after his demise, Muslims and Nigerians at large still remember him as a teacher, a reformer, and a pillar of Islamic scholarship.

May Allah have mercy on his soul and grant him Jannah as his eternal abode.

Nigerian Police Spend ₦22 Million on Biscuits While Retired Officers Await Unpaid Benefits

By Abubakar Bashir Adam Yakasai

A development that has stirred outrage across social media and within the public is the revelation that the Nigerian Police Force spent a staggering ₦22.2 million on the purchase of 85 cartons of Cream Crackers biscuits. This translates to roughly ₦261,000 per carton — a figure far above the market price.

According to reports by Sahara Reporters, the payment was disbursed in three stages, with the funds drawn from the government’s official spending platform (Govspend). The revelation has sparked widespread criticism, as many question the rationale behind such extravagant spending on items deemed nonessential at a time of economic hardship.

A social commentator, Dan Bello, remarked: “So it’s not only pension funds that are being looted — now even biscuits are being used as an excuse to squander public money.”

This controversy comes at a time when retired police officers continue to lament the government’s failure to pay their long-overdue pensions and retirement benefits. Some of them have even taken their grievances directly to the authorities, demanding urgent action.

Observers argue that if the police can afford to spend millions on biscuits, there is no justification for withholding the legitimate entitlements of its retired officers. The incident has further raised questions about transparency, accountability, and fairness in the management of police funds.

Army Smashes Terrorists’ Logistics Ring, Rescues Nine Hostages

The Nigerian Army has announced the arrest of 11 terrorist logistics suppliers and the rescue of nine kidnapped victims during a series of nationwide operations carried out within 48 hours.

According to military authorities, the operations were targeted at dismantling criminal networks supplying arms, food, fuel, and other essential items to terrorist groups across the country. The Army said the swift action dealt a heavy blow to the logistics chain of the terrorists, weakening their capacity to operate.

In addition, troops stormed several hideouts where the hostages were being held captive, leading to their successful rescue without casualties. The rescued victims have since been handed over to the appropriate authorities for medical attention and reunification with their families.

The Army reaffirmed its commitment to intensifying operations aimed at eradicating terrorism and banditry in the country, urging citizens to continue providing credible information that would assist security forces in their efforts.

BREAKING: NUPENG Suspends Strike

The Nigerian Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) has suspended its two-day strike after a meeting with the Dangote Group on Tuesday.

Following the talks, NUPENG announced the suspension of the action, saying it would continue discussions with the Dangote Group to address outstanding issues.

The decision is expected to ease pressure on fuel distribution, given the impact shortages often have on the nation’s economy and daily life.
