The Formal Speaker Of Houses Of Assembly Is Dead

A revered statesman, legal practitioner, and former Speaker of the Old Anambra State House of Assembly, Chief Benjamin Afagu Ekwealor, has reportedly passed away at the age of 89.

Naija News learnt that the elder statesman died last Saturday, July 26, 2025, at his residence in Nzam, Anambra West Local Government Area of Anambra State.

His family confirmed the development in a statement released on Wednesday.

Speaking on behalf of the family, Chuba Ekwealor described his late father as a man who used law as a tool for justice and progress.

“He brought his legal expertise to bear across various spheres of public service,” Chuba said.

Before venturing into law and politics, Chief Ekwealor had a fruitful career in education.

He served as a school principal until 1977 when he retired and answered the call of his community to enter politics.

That same year, he became actively involved with the defunct National Party of Nigeria (NPN) and was subsequently elected to the Old Anambra State House of Assembly in 1979.

He was re-elected in 1983 and eventually rose to become Speaker of the Assembly, which then covered present-day Anambra, Enugu, and Ebonyi States.

The trained lawyer, Ekwealor, served on the Anambra State Judicial Service Commission from 1998 as a representative of the Nigerian Bar.

He held the position for nearly a decade and was widely respected for his principled views and steadfast commitment to judicial ethics.

His legal acumen earned him recognition in legal and political circles alike, further cementing his legacy as a figure of integrity and service.

Outside his roles in public office, Naija News understands that Ekwealor was also a respected voice in Nzam and across Anambra State.

Known for his humility and dedication to communal progress, he served as a mentor to many and a custodian of traditional values.

His life’s work cut across education, law, and politics, making him one of the few Nigerians who seamlessly straddled multiple spheres of influence.

He is survived by six children and several grandchildren. The family has announced that details of his funeral arrangements will be made public in the coming days.

Pete Edochie Review Why Igbo Men Aren't Suited For Politics

Pete Edochie, the ace Nigerian actor, has argued that Igbo men are not naturally suited for politics.
In an interview on Afia Culture & Lifestyle, the legendary actor explained that politics often involves “treachery,” a trait Igbo men “struggle to endure.”

According to him, once an Igbo man experiences betrayal, he tends to withdraw completely rather than continue engaging in political maneuvering.

“An Igbo man is not a good politician, and I will tell you why. People who are used to politics—or the treachery that often characterises politics—can overlook a lot of things,” he said.

“But the Igbo man is not constituted to condone treachery more than once. If you hurt an Igbo man once in politics, he will never give you the opportunity to hurt him again.

“He will recoil. That is the average Igbo man. The Igbo man simply is not built to endure political betrayal.

“The moment you show any sign of treachery in dealing with him, he cuts you off. That’s it.”

Edochie rose to fame in the 1980s after playing the lead role in the Nigerian Television Authority’s adaptation of Chinua Achebe’s Things Fall Apart. He hails from the Igbo ethnic group in Anambra State.

In 2003, 78-year-old Edochie was conferred with the national honour of Member of the Order of the Niger (MON) by then-President Olusegun Obasanjo

Jealous Boyfriend Allegedly Pours Petrol On Girlfriend, Set Her Ablaze.

According to preliminary reports, the suspect, in a fit of jealousy, allegedly doused Nompumelelo and his own sister with petrol.

A jealous boyfriend has doused a 22-year-old South African woman, Nompumelelo Gumede with petrol before setting her ablaze.

The young lady is now fighting for her life in ICU after the attack.

The attack was carried out by her boyfriend and father of her two-year-old child.

The horrific domestic violence incident occurred in eMalahleni, Witbank, Mpumalanga province.

According to preliminary reports, the suspect, in a fit of jealousy, allegedly doused Nompumelelo and his own sister with petrol before locking them inside a room and setting it on fire.

The sister had reportedly tried to protect Nompumelelo from the assault.

The incident has sent shockwaves through the community, as details of the gruesome attack continue to emerge. Both victims suffered extensive burn injuries and remain in critical condition.

The suspect was arrested shortly after the incident and is expected to appear in court on Monday, July 28, facing charges of attempted murder and arson.

Gender-based violence activists are calling for swift justice and stronger protection measures for women.

“This is yet another example of how unsafe women are, even in their own homes,” one local activist said.

As Nompumelelo lies in hospital, her future uncertain, her family and supporters hope for her recovery and for justice to be served swiftly.

Bandits Release Video Of Over 150+ Captives Pleading For Government Negotiation

Over 150 residents of Zamfara State, abducted by armed bandits, have appeared in a viral video pleading with the state government to engage in peace talks with their captors.

The footage, shared via TikTok by a notorious bandit leader, Ibrahim Musa (.Musa99), showed men, women, and children from communities including Cogon Daji, Danabuce, Kuliya, Bayawa, Magulu, and Gidan Garduwa.

Speaking in Hausa, one of the victims described dire conditions in the forest hideout where they have been held for weeks.

The abductee lamented, “We are people from Cogon Daji, Danabuce, Kuliya, Bayawa, Magulu, Gidan Garduwa, and other areas in Zamfara State. We have been here for weeks. Our leaders are flying around with their families, while we are dying here of hunger.

“Please, the Zamfara State Government should consider our situation and come to dialogue with our abductors. We are suffering. We are starving. And we are human beings too.”

In what appears to be a calculated message from the gunmen, the abductee revealed that the bandits holding them have expressed readiness for peace talks but accused authorities of ignoring them.

The victim said, “We want to tell the Zamfara State Government that what we’ve seen here is that this insecurity is mainly due to a lack of understanding between government and these gunmen.

“The bandits are saying the government looks down on them, like they don’t know anything or have any rights. But they are saying they’re ready for dialogue. In our camp alone, we are over 150 people. Other camps have over 200. Some are uncountable.”

According to a report by Daily Post, on Monday, July 28, the Court of Appeal sitting in Owerri, Imo State, has delivered a landmark ruling that strips the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) of the power to arbitrarily confiscate drivers licences, impound vehicles, or hold any related documents without legal backing. This decision reaffirms the constitutional rights of Nigerian road users against unlawful treatment by traffic enforcement agents.

The judgment was issued in Appeal No: CA/OW/199/2022, where the FRSC, its Corps Marshal, and an officer bearing Uniform No. COSS 35, challenged an earlier High Court ruling in favour of Dr. Emmanuel Ugochukwu Shebbs.

The appellate court sided with the respondent, confirming that the previous actions of the FRSC amounted to a gross breach of Shebbs’ fundamental human rights.

The three member panel of Justices, Amina Audi Wambai, M. Lawal Abubakar, and Ntong F. Ntong, unanimously upheld the decision of the High Court of Abia State.

3-Dead, Several Injured As Train With 100 Passengers Suffer Accident.

Three people were killed and several others injured when a regional passenger train derailed in a wooded area in southwestern Germany on Sunday, police said.

About 100 passengers were aboard the train, when the accident occurred at around 6:10 pm (1610 GMT) near the town of Riedlingen in Baden-Wuerttemberg state.

Contacted by AFP, police initially said four people had been killed before correcting their statement to three victims.

Authorities declined to elaborate on the number of injured or how seriously hurt they were, though tabloid Bild cited emergency workers saying there were 50 injured.

German rail operator Deutsche Bahn confirmed several deaths and numerous injured. Two train carriages had derailed “for reasons yet unknown”, it added.

Authorities were currently investigating the circumstances of the accident, the operator said, and traffic had been suspended over a 40-kilometre (25-mile) stretch of the route.

German media reported that a landslide might have caused the accident as severe storms swept through the region, according to weather services.

The passenger train was travelling from the German town of Sigmaringen to the city of Ulm when it derailed in a forested area.

– Outdated train infrastructure –

In a post on social media, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz expressed his condolences to the families of those killed.

He added that he was in close contact with both the interior and transport ministers, and had asked them to “provide the emergency services with all the support they need”.

Footage from the scene of the accident showed yellow-and-grey-coloured train carriages lying on their sides, as firefighters and emergency services tried to get to the passengers.

According to local TV station SWR, helicopters arrived shortly after the accident to transport the injured to hospitals in the area, and emergency doctors from nearby hospitals were alerted.

German transport is regularly criticised by passengers for its outdated infrastructure, with travellers facing frequent train delays, and various technical problems.

The government has pledged to invest several hundred billion euros over the next few years, in particular to modernise infrastructure.

In June 2022, a train derailed near a Bavarian Alpine resort in southern Germany, killing four people and injuring dozens.

Germany’s deadliest rail accident happened in 1998 when a high-speed train operated by state-owned Deutsche Bahn derailed in Eschede in Lower Saxony, killing 101 people.

Tinubu Death Rumour: Norther Youths Defend DSS, Attack Amnesty International.

A Northern socio-cultural group, Northern Ethnic Youths Group Assembly, NEYGA, has chided Amnesty International, AI, for supporting fake news to destabilize Nigeria.

On Friday, an Abuja Chief Magistrate Court had remanded 29-year-old Ghali Isma’il in prison for posting fake TikTok videos that President Bola Tinubu died due to food poisoning.

He was arrested by operatives of the Department of State Services, DSS, and subsequently arraigned before the Magistrate Court.

DSS informed the court that the TikToker’s action was contrary to Nigerian law.

Reacting, AI said Isma’il’s arrest was a “clear demonstration of abuse of power.”

AI said the arrest was an attempt to gag Nigerian youths and restrict them from using social media.

It said Isma’il’s arrest was carried out without thoroughly investigating the originality of the videos.

However, the spokesman of NEYGA, Ibrahim Dan-Musa, accused AI of hiding under the cover of freedom of speech to destabilize Nigeria.

In a statement he signed, Dan-Musa said: “We commend the DSS for approaching the courts to determine Isma’il’s guilt or innocence.
“Consequently, we urge our security agencies, particularly the DSS, to investigate the activities of AI in Nigeria as there is sufficient suspicion that they do not seek the good of Nigeria.

“When Nnamdi Kanu alleged that the late President Muhammadu Buhari had died and was replaced by a body double from Sudan, we condemned him.

“See where Kanu’s freedom of speech has landed us. This is why we stand resolute in our condemnation of Ghali Isma’il’s recent publications and the support he enjoys from Amnesty International.”

Coalition ADC Speaks On Preferred Presidential Candidate for 2027

The interim national publicity secretary of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Bolaji Abdullahi, has said that the north has not entered into any discussions about who will emerge as its presidential candidate ahead of the 2027 elections.

Abdullahi stated this on Saturday in Abuja at the third plenary session of the Northern Political Consultative Group (NPCG), with the theme: ‘Peace and social cohesion: A panacea to challenges of the north’.

He asserted that the ADC is not being structured to serve the ambition of any individual

The ADC stalwart said, “We don’t have any favourite aspirants or candidates. We are not having any conversation at the moment.

“Nobody has ever had any conversation about who will be the party’s flagbearer
“We believe that it is too early in the day. Our focus now is to build a political party that is strong enough to deliver on the mission that we have set for ourselves.”

The former minister said the party is focused on creating a new political culture that prioritises national interest over personal ambition.

“You see, the process for the building of the party ensures that the party does not coalesce around any individual.

“And like I repeatedly emphasised, the ADC is not built for anybody’s ambition. ADC is a party that is determined to give a different trajectory to Nigerian politics. We don’t have any predetermined agenda,” he said.

Coalition Leaders Mull Plan B -DETAILS

Meet coalition leaders Thursday, interim leaders return to Abuja this week | North has bled enough, says David Mark, region not abandoned – Umahi

As legal hurdles loom, leaders of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) are not leaving anything to chance as they have decided to pursue the registration of the Advanced Democratic Party (ADA).

The decision of the opposition leaders to follow through with the ADA option, it was gathered, is a result of a threat by a member of the ADC to challenge the takeover of the opposition party by political heavyweights.

ADA is one of the many political associations seeking registration with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

It was the platform that aggrieved members of the ruling party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and others had wanted to use to challenge President Bola Tinubu and the ruling party in the 2027 general election.

The interim leader of the ADA is Chief Akin Rickets, with its headquarters at UAC Complex, Samuel Ademulegan Street, Central Business District, Abuja.

LEADERSHIP had last month reported that another political association with the acronym, ADA, was seeking to be registered by INEC.

The platform is named the Advanced Democratic Alliance (ADA), which is number 110 on the list after the coalition’s ADA, which is listed as 109 on the commission’s log.

However, Umar Ardo, a key convener of the Coalition group, played down the situation, adding that they applied before the other association.

Ardo told LEADERSHIP Sunday, “No problem. We’re there before them.”

However, a former presidential candidate of the ADC, Dumebi Kachikwu, has repeatedly opposed the takeover of ADC by the coalition leaders.

A political scientist, Jideofor Adibe, last Thursday claimed that the All Progressives Congress (APC) would encourage Kachikwu to engage in legal disputes with the David Mark leadership of the party to derail it from its mission of wresting power from President Bola Tinubu in 2027.

In this vein, three dissatisfied members of the ADC have reportedly filed a suit at the Federal High Court in Abuja seeking the removal of Senator David Mark as the party’s interim leader.

The plaintiffs, Adeyemi Emmanuel, Ayodeji Victor Tolu, and Haruna Ismaila, also contested the legitimacy of Mark and others serving as interim leaders, arguing that the transfer of the party’s leadership to those involved in the coalition arrangement may have violated an existing court judgement.

The ADC coalition, led by interim national chairman Mark and national secretary Rauf Aregbesola, has, however, clarified that all the legal requirements were sorted out before they assumed leadership.
Meanwhile, ADC state chairmen had on July 11 declared support for David Mark’s leadership after an Abuja meeting.

Speaking after the meeting, Hon. Kingsley Ogga, chairman of the ADC Forum of State Chairmen and the Kogi State party chairman, reaffirmed the support of the state chairmen to the interim leadership and the coalition following growing speculations about internal divisions within the ADC, especially among the state chapters.

The ADC further announced that at least 97 lawyers were ready to represent the party in an ongoing court case.

Sources close to the members of the coalition confided in one of our correspondents that they were already discussing the possibility of registering another party.

‘‘The leaders of the coalition are not sleeping. They know what the ruling party is capable of doing. That’s why we are planning what we can describe as Plan B. We won’t allow them to catch us unawares,’’ the source said.
