Niger State Governor Umar Bago has confirmed the deaths of 37 suspected illegal miners while in the custody of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Minna.

Bago confirmed the incident on Thursday during a press conference in Minna, describing the deaths as tragic

The governor said the cause of death had not been established, but noted that suffocation or lead poisoning could be among the possible causes.

He added that the state government had constituted a committee of inquiry to investigate the circumstances surrounding the deaths.

Bago also appealed to youths in the state to remain calm and refrain from taking the law into their own hands.

SEMA distributes Maulud items to 13 correctional centres in Kano

The Kano State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) has distributed food items to 13 correctional centres across the state to support inmates during the Maulud celebration.

The items distributed included cattle, rice, cooking oil and other food ingredients to enable those in the centres to mark the celebration of the birth of Prophet Muhammad (SAW)

The distribution is part of SEMA’s efforts to provide support and welfare assistance to people in correctional centres, particularly during festive and significant occasions.

The agency said the initiative was also aimed at demonstrating compassion and solidarity with people requiring special care and supporting their eventual reintegration into society.

Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has appointed Barrister Hafsat Ada’u Kutama as the Acting Chairperson of the Public Complaints and Anti-Corruption Commission (PCACC).

Kutama, who previously served as the commission’s Secretary, takes over in an acting capacity following the resignation of the commission’s chairman, Saidu Yahaya.
