How to raise layers for profits

Home Poultry The A to Z of keeping layers
Poultry
The A to Z of keeping layers
The A to Z of keeping layers
It can be a lucrative business but also fraught with many challenges, experts say
A minimum of 300 layers is the least number one should keep to make good commercial sense.

This could fetch you up to 6,000,000 naira a year, while having 1,000 layers can rake in 17,000,000 naira a year. However, this business can be capital intensive and fraught with challenges. It is a good idea to start small to help you get to where you want to be. Layers need to be carefully raised from when they are one-day old. They start laying eggs from 18 to 19 weeks old (about four-and-a-half months), until 72-78 weeks or more, depending on the breed and management.

There will be days when the hen does not lay an egg at all. Its body begins forming another egg shortly after the previous one is laid, and it takes 26 hours, meaning that it will lay later and later each day and then skip a day at some point.

Traditional chickens produce eggs on and off and for three to four years. The longer the length of production, the fewer the eggs produced, though the size increases with time, while shell quality decreases.

How you handle your chickens when they are pullets, feed management and other factors also contribute to the number of eggs and for how long the chickens will lay.

To be successful you must understand the circle from acquiring chicks through to the time they start laying eggs. Knowing the importance of brooding, lighting and temperatures; diseases, vaccination and so on are also critical. Diseases can be very devastating, with whole flocks wiped out in one night.

Have a business plan, no matter how simple you begin, to be sure about what you require; your projections of what to expect and when you expect to break even and start making profits.

Keep proper records of stocks, feeds, vaccination, mortality, weight, sale of birds and eggs, and other expenses.

Knowing your market is also critical. The market is always available, but most farmers don’t go out in search of it. One can market poultry products through family, friends, institutions, supermarkets, and open day markets.

To be a good poultry products supplier, you must be consistent. Give enough time to the business by watching the number of hours spent on feeding the birds, and vaccination and other tasks and avoid being an online or telephone farmer.

When buying chicks, go for breeders who offer after sales services and who will guide and mentor you throughout the rearing process.

Before your Layer chicks arrive at home, make sure

√ A brooder is in place

√ Paraffin lamps/electric bulbs/charcoal stove is available

√ Litter for the floor is available

√ 1m2 will accommodate 20 chicks upto 4 weeks old.

√ Temperature control: 350C for day-old chicks, 24-270C for 1 week.

√ Reduce heat as they grow especially at night.

Feeding your Layers

Layers – 1 to 8 weeks feed on chick mash, after 8 weeks introduce growers mash gradually, then with layers mash
after drop of first egg.

From the day a layer chick hatches, the chicken takes about five months before it starts laying eggs.
As a poultry farmer you must be prepared to meet the expense of rearing these young birds (pullets) through this period.
Feeding the young pullets is a major challenge. In an effort to cut down costs, many farmers make the mistake to
underfeed the birds during this pre-lay period.

When your hens are laying eggs, you may not feel the burden of purchasing feeds since they are generating some
income from the sale of eggs.

Do not forget that the performance of your commercial layers is greatly influenced by how you
manage them in brooding and pullet growing phases.

There must be clear performance indicators which you have to monitor during the brooding, growing and laying phases
of egg-type chickens (layers).

Body weight is a major performance indicator.

Under-feeding pullets produces underweight
birds which mature late, produce small eggs and decline more sharply after peak egg production.

Overfeeding produces overweight birds. Overweight pullets are not good because they neither attain nor
sustain high egg production.

Pullets which have been raised well attain high peak production and are less prone to
subsequent egg production problems.

How to mix chick Mash

Give your layers Chick Mash from 0-6 weeks Starter.
For 100 kg of Maize bran mix with 12 kg fish, 10 kg sun flower, 10 kg cotton, and 4 kg shells.

How to mix grower's mash

Grower's mash is also called layer replacement/developer/gain and you give it upto 10 weeks.

You will give grower's mash as gian prior to selling off your birds for meat in the market as
what in Nigeria most of us call spent layers.

You mix 100 Kg of Maize bran with 15 kg fish meal, 12 Kg cotton seed cake, 8kg of shells,
4 kg bones, ½ Kg calcium, ½ Kg premix, 50 gm Furazolodine, 1 kg red salt, 1 kg fossil.

How to mix layer's Mash

Given your chicken layers mash from start of Egg laying to selling off, typically a 20 weeks egg laying cycle.
For every 100 kg of maize bran, mix 25 kg of fish meal, 10 kg of Sunflower, 10 kg of cotton seed cake, 8 kg of shells,
1/2kg of calcium, 3/4kg Primix, 150 gm of Lysin and 2 kg of Red salt.

Good management practices/tips for your layer chicken

Allow for good air circulation in your poulty house for egg laying birds

Layer needs on average 120 gm of food per day

Distribute food troughs and water troughs evenly (one basin/50 birds)

Provide grit at 20 weeks, you give your birds small, loose particles of stone or sand.

Laying nests must be kept in dark places, collect eggs 3 times a day, allow a nest for every 5 layer hens

Provide soft clean litter

Store eggs with the small end facing down

Clean dirty eggs with steel wool/coarse leaves, Never wash your eggs

Add greens to the diet of your layers and whenever possible vitamins to their water

Debeak your layer chicken at onset of egg laying

Cull your Layers when egg production drops below 40%. To cull, simply means you start slaughtering your birds for meat

This is not wishful thinking, you can achieve this if you have the discipline to follow all these.

HOW TO REDUCE POULTRY MORTALITY AND MAKE MORE PROFITS.

If your chickens are dying unnecessarily and you are looking for ways to reduce poultry mortality in your farm, you are welcome to continue reading. Firstly, you and I can agree that dying birds are a huge economic loss to any poultry farmer.
The higher the number of birds that die in your poultry farm, the lower your revenue and ultimately, your profit. As a result, a good farmer will do all he can to reduce the rate of poultry mortality on his farm.

*Table of Contents*

+What are the common causes of sudden death in poultry?

+There are a lot of reasons for early chick mortality in poultry farming.

+Poor feed and improper hygiene can lead to the early death of chicks.

+Stress and lack of proper ventilation in the brood house are also common reasons for high poultry mortality.

+In addition, the quality of chick you stock your farm with will determine their survival in your farm.
For instance, If you stock chicks with a yolk sac infection, then early mortality is likely to be high.

However, after one week of stocking, mortality is more likely to be the result of predation, disease or suffocation.

What level of poultry mortality should I expect?

It is worth looking at mortality in the flock as two separate ‘time periods’:

• Mortality in the first week after placement

• Mortality from the second week onwards.

Mortality during the first week is often a result of the quality of day-old chicks, which is often outside the control of the farm.

While a mortality rate of up to/around 1.5% during this first week is not unusual, it is obviously worthwhile taking steps to minimize your losses.

Throughout the life of the flock, you should aim to keep mortality as low as possible.

After the first week, if the mortality rate rises above 1% in any single day you must assess the cause and address it.

You should also consider contacting your vet or poultry advisor for further advice.

What can I do to reduce poultry mortality in my farm?

If your poultry farm is recording a high rate of poultry mortality, that should make you worry.

You are losing a lot and should not expect a reasonable profit after the sale of your poultry products.

The costs of buying the chicks, transportation, and feeding before their death are economic losses to avoid.

Let’s look at some of the practical steps you can take to reduce mortality in your poultry farm.

1. Buy quality chicks from trusted suppliers like Joe Tech Poultry Farm

This is usually the beginning of problems for most farmers.

When you buy poor quality and unhealthy chicks, you risk having a high mortality rate in your poultry farm.

Most of the health problems that affect birds are as a result of a poor genetic background or early life.

A lot of unhealthy and poor quality chickens are the product of poor parents.

Some egg hatcheries are not reputable as they raise poor parent stocks to produce fertile eggs.

Many buy eggs from bad and problematic parent stock farms at giveaway prices, mostly to make more profit.

There are some poultry farmers who never make any attempts to know the source of eggs of a particular hatchery.

This is a really bad practice.

If you are a victim of this practice, you need to stop neglecting important issues that affect your farm.

You end up buying chicks from you know nothing about, hence raise problematic chicks that ruin your investment.

In addition, inspect the health status of each bird before transporting them to your farm.

2. Protect the flock from extreme cold,

Do whatever you can to avoid exposing your birds to extreme cold conditions.

Extreme cold can wreak havoc in your poultry farm.

You can wake up one morning to find a lot of your chickens dead overnight.

The best way to protect chickens from extreme cold is to supply heat during very cold weather.

You can also design the pens in such a way that you do not expose your birds to extremely cold conditions.

3. Reduce the risk of suffocating the chicks to death.

Birds can easily suffocate and die when something triggers them to move to a tight corner, forming a heap.

The birds at the bottom of the heap can suffocate or suffer a fatal injury.

Death of chickens a result of suffocation can occur at any age in the bird’s life.

However, you can easily avoid some causes than others.

First, you need to ensure that the temperature and humidity in the brooding house are at the right levels.

Apart from having the right levels, you must ensure that temperature and humidity is uniform throughout the pen.

If one part of your pen is too cold for instance, they may huddle and suffocate themselves in an attempt to stay warm.

A simple tip to help you prevent your birds from suffocating to death is to centralize the heat source in the pen.

When the heat source is in the middle, the birds will not need to heap up in one corner of the pen and suffocate.

Secondly, try to avoid sudden loud noises around the birds.

A sudden loud noise can cause the birds to panic and pack together.

3. The third way to reduce the risk of suffocation is to control or keep predators away from your farm.

This can help to avoid the risk of panic-induced gathering that can lead to suffocation.

4. Always wash drinkers and replace the leftover water

Make sure you always wash the drinkers or drinking trough of your birds every morning.

It is also essential to discard leftover water and replace with clean, fresh water.

Never use water from a stream or river that you don’t know its source.

Also, avoid filling your drinkers with chlorinated water.

Ensure that you rinse off the drinkers properly to avoid re-contaminating the freshwater with soaps or detergents.

When discarding leftover water and feed, do so very far away from the pen.

This way, you will be preventing soldier ants from invading your farm and killing your chickens.

5. Serve water before feeds

Water is very important in the growth and development of birds.

This is also true for every animal.

The reason for this tip is to prevent chickens from stampeding themselves as they struggle for food.

Naturally, chickens tend to drink water slower than they peck on their feed.

By placing water first, you will divert the attention of some of the chickens to focus on drinking water.

By the time you introduce the feed, the struggle will not be much as only a few will be eating while others are drinking.

This way, you can reduce the risks of poultry mortality as a result of stampeding.

6. Prevent diseases from causing mortality in your poultry farm

Some diseases have the potential to wipe out your entire flock at the same time.

There are diseases that may not cause the death of any birds but may affect feed conversion ratio of the birds

It may get as bad as affecting the weight of the chicken at harvest, the carcass quality and also egg production.

As part of your planning make sure to find out what diseases may present a risk to the birds in your farm and learn the key symptoms.

Get advice from your vet or poultry advisor.

Here is a guide about poultry diseases, symptoms and how to prevent them.

Some key factors that can increase the risk of disease include the number of birds on the farm keeping different species of birds together your rotational management of the landfeed type and sourcestress levelsbreed type and so on.

7. Avoid serving poultry birds mouldy feeds

In trying to cut cost, your risk the life of your birds by feeding them mouldy feeds.

Mouldy feeds can be dangerous and poisonous to your chickens.

Feeding your birds with this kind of feed is really risky.

The birds can easily fall sick or even contract a disease from the bad feed.

Mouldy feeds are what they are, bad and dangerous, and you must dispose of them immediately.

To prevent yourself from having mouldy feeds in your farm, always keep the feeds away from water.

Also, avoid storing your feed in storage rooms with very high humidity.

Another tip is to order for the quantity of feed that your birds will finish before the end of its shelf life.

Always look at the expiry dates on the feed before buying.

When you store feeds properly in dry, moderate temperature conditions, the shelf life of the poultry feed can be up to 3 months

8. Keep predators away from your poultry farm

Just about every predator out there will take poultry if they get the chance.

Dogs, cats, hawks and owls will all kill birds.

In the same way, rats and snakes will take chicks.

You must also ensure that the poultry house is predator-proof, preventing predators from getting in.

Remember that a house that keeps birds in does not necessarily keep predators out.

Predators may try to dig into the poultry house from underneath or gain access through the roof.
Even small gaps in the house itself or climbing plants that surround the farm can be a risk.
You cannot imagine how far predators can go in squeezing themselves through to get to your birds.
Do well to close all holes around the farm, and always monitor your farm for signs of predators.

9. Strictly follow medication and vaccination schedule strictly, It is a good farm practice to vaccinate every new flock of birds you stock in your farm. This will help to prevent an endemic disease outbreak which can lead to loss of birds in the poultry farm.
Immunize your birds against some deadly poultry diseases like Newcastle Diseases (ND), Fowl Pox, Fowl Typhoid, Gumboro Disease etc.
Most hatcheries will likely immunize their chicks before selling.

You also need to get the right vaccination and medication schedule of the poultry species you’re raising. you can contact us for vaccine schedule.

10. Prevent ammonia build up in the litter system of poultry farming
Ammonia builds up in the pen when the litter is wet or when you leave them in your pen for a very long time. A wet and dirty litter emits ammonia gas which can be very dangerous to birds.
When the ammonia level in the air exceeds 25 ppm, it may result in a lot of stresses in the birds.
Problems like irritation of the eyes and nasal membrane, poor feed intake, and slow growth rate may result.
Other infections such as coccidiosis and respiratory diseases like coryza, bronchitis etc may even attack the birds. To prevent this, always remove wet or caked litters from pens and replace with new litters as soon as possible. This will prevent your chickens, turkeys and quails from mortality due to choking or other respiratory problems.

11. Maintain proper hygiene and sanitation

Diseases can enter the farm through the workers, feed, water, new birds, visitors and/or wild or stray birds.
This can occur when you don’t take poultry health management and biosecurity very seriously.

12. Supply sufficient feed to your birds, When you do not feed your birds properly, they cannot grow well and produce excellently. Underfed birds will always have low body weights and poor immune responses.
As a result, birds can easily fall sick and die.

So ensure you give enough feed and avoid underfeeding, which could lead to another problem.

Please bear in mind that:

Grower is not for Broilers feeding.

Secondly Finisher doesn't make birds to grow fat and add weight, finisher has less crude protein in the compounded feed, it contains more of energy and Energy doesn't make birds to add weight but rather to maintain the weight gotten from feeding starter, Starter feed contains more of Crude protein and less energy and that is what makes birds to grow fat and add weight quickly.

The standard feeding rate for Broilers is Starter 0-28 days (0-4weeks) and Finisher 28- 56 days (4-8weeks) depending when you will sale or slaughter.
It's also advisable not to withdraw the starter feed @ week 4 immediately but to start mixing with Finisher feed to week 5, before withdrawing the starter feed completely so that they have adapted to picking the finisher feed pellets size.

My recommendation with the following tips for raising broiler chickens to market weight successfully

1. Breeding selection: Start with good quality birds that are bred from other good quality birds. That means, don't buy day old chicks from sketchy sources, only buy quality chicks from note worthy hatcheries and distributors, quality chicks have the good qualities like fast growth, good feed conversion, and resistance to common poultry diseases.

2. Feed: Feeding is a crucial factor in broiler chicken growth. Use high-quality feed and feed them regularly, don't Starve them at all but don't over feed them either, control the feeding and Ensure that the feed is fresh, free from any molds or contaminants, and that the birds have access to it at all times.

3. Housing: Provide adequate housing for the birds. The housing should be clean, dry and well-ventilated. I repeat the housing musy be clean dry and well ventilated, this will help you immmensely. And provide adequate space to ensure that the birds have enough room to move around. Overcrowding can stress the birds and lead to poor growth.

4. Hygiene: Maintain good hygiene practices at all times (at all times). Keep the housing clean, tidy, and dry, and disinfect regularly. Use good quality litter and replace it frequently.

5. Water: Ensure that the birds have access to clean, fresh water at all times. Purchase waterers that are easy to clean and sanitize regularly. Plastic automatic drinkers are the best.

6. Exercise: Encourage the birds to exercise by providing platforms, ropes, or other objects that can be used as roosts. This will help the birds to move around more freely and burn off more calories, leading to faster growth.

7. Natural remedies: Use natural remedies to prevent and treat any illnesses. For example, garlic and apple cider vinegar diluted in the drinking water can help to prevent various diseases and improve digestive health.

8. Gradual feeding program: Introduce a gradual feeding program where the birds are fed small amounts of food, several times a day. This approach will help the birds to digest their food more efficiently, resulting in better growth rates.

By following these tips, you will successfully raise broiler chickens to market weight without the use of drugs. It is also essential to monitor the birds closely and seek veterinary assistance if any problems arise.

Protecting Poultry Against Airborne Diseases During Harmattan Season

Harmattan season in Nigeria can trigger disease outbreaks in poultry farms, leading to increased vulnerability to diseases like bird flu, Newcastle disease, and Gumboro disease. The dry and dusty conditions during harmattan can make chickens more susceptible to diseases, while the period after harmattan can lead to heat stress and Newcastle disease. To protect poultry during this season, farmers can take several measures:

1. Vaccination: Ensure that birds are vaccinated against common diseases such as Newcastle disease, bird flu, and Gumboro disease.

2. Biosecurity: Implement strict biosecurity measures to prevent the introduction and spread of diseases. This includes controlling human and vehicle movement, disinfecting equipment, and controlling access to the farm.

3. Ventilation: Proper ventilation in poultry houses can help reduce the risk of airborne diseases by improving air quality and reducing humidity.

4. Hygiene: Maintain good hygiene practices, including regular cleaning and disinfection of poultry houses and equipment.

5. Monitoring: Regularly monitor the health of the birds for any signs of illness and take prompt action if any disease is suspected.

By implementing these measures, poultry farmers can help protect their birds against airborne diseases during the harmattan season, ultimately safeguarding the health and productivity of their poultry.

3 IMPORTANT THINGS YOU OUGHT TO KNOW ABOUT LAYERS BEFORE YOU START POULTRY FARMING.

Having adequate knowledge on how to start a layer farm is the first step in ensuring profitability. Raising egg-laying poultry birds for the purpose of commercial egg production is what layers poultry farming is about. We have different poultry farming in Nigeria but the most profitable of them all are layers.

To set up a layer farm, the following steps must be taken;
1)Location
The housing system is very important for rearing layers, effective keeping and management.
As a new person to Livestock business, you don’t want to invest all your capital into buying lands ohh, you could rent a poultry pen that has cages or you can start off by raising your layers in a deep litter system.
Battery cages are the best housing cages for laying birds because it creates comfort and stability for them.

2)Set-Up Capital
I would have given a specific price but because of how things are getting more cost in Nigeria and I won’t. But what you will be spending money on before starting includes Day old chicks or point of lays, Cost of medication, cost of employing labour and workers on your farm, Cages to put layers and so on.
Like every other farming projects, the bigger you plan to start, the longer it will take you. You can just decide to start with that little capital you have then later expand.

3)Gather More Knowledge about the necessary Vaccinations done for layers.
Vaccination makes your hen disease resistance. It helps to keep them free from infections and reduce the mortality rate. But before vaccination, take note that you don’t need to vaccinate ill hen anymore (separate ill birds to avoid spreading) and make sure vaccination equipment is washed with hot boiled water or antiseptic/germicide. Here are the vaccines that can be given to layer hens. Marek,Gumboro, Salmonella, Lasota Vaccine, Komorov Vaccine, 3IN1(Optional) and Fowl Pox.

WAYS TO MAKE YOUR CHICKEN LAY MORE.

1. Access to clean water:
They need clean, fresh water every day to support their bodily needs. I know, you see them drinking from muddy puddles and ditches but they really should have clean water. That murky water you see them drinking may contain parasites and bacteria that can make them sick.
If hens become dehydrated they will not lay eggs and it will take them a few days to start laying again.

2. Reducing Stress
Chickens can get stressed by small and inconsequential things such as a change of feed, loud noises, a squirrel in the run, and other trivial things that we would not even think about.

It is your job to try and keep the stress down to a minimum if you want your chickens to lay eggs.

3. Calcium

A hen that lacks calcium will lay soft-shelled or shell-less eggs. Soft shell eggs look like regular eggs but when you pick them up, they are not hard they are quite malleable in the hand. A shell-less egg looks exactly like it sounds, there may be a thin membrane holding everything inside, but there is no solid shell.

4. Enough Space
Chickens do not like to be crammed together. They like having enough space to flap their wings!
Inside the coop, each chicken should have 4 square feet of space, and outside in the run, they each need at least 8 square feet.
Just remember that crowding them can lead to health and behavioral issues.

They may start pecking and feather plucking, egg eating, and a host of other anti-social behaviors. The weaker birds get trampled on too and can suffer from injuries.

By giving them enough space you are providing for their mental and emotional well-being. A happy and content chicken is going to be healthier and more productive than a hen that is unhappy and depressed.

5. Parasites And Bugs

Bugs are not only irritating but they can be very bad for your hens’ health.

Mites in particular will suck your hens’ blood overnight.

In severe cases, this can lead to anemia and death, even in mild cases
