Natasha Allegation: Northern Elders Forum Call On Akpabio To Resign

Mar 6 2025

The Northern Elders Forum (NEF) has called on the President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, to step aside to ensure a fair and unbiased investigation in the sexual harassment allegation levelled against him by a female Senator, Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, representing Kogi Central Senatorial District.

A statement on Wednesday issued by
Professor Abubakar Jika Jiddere,
Spokesperson, Northern Elders Forum, called for an immediate, independent investigation into the allegation to uphold the sanctity of the Nigerian Senate.

Jiddere, said, as the highest law-making institution in Nigeria, the Senate must uphold the values of fairness, justice, and respect, adding that “Any deviation from these principles risks damaging Nigeria’s reputation in the international community.”

According to the statement which reads in part, “The Northern Elders Forum (NEF) is closely monitoring the unfolding conflict in the Senate between Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Distinguished Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, representing Kogi Central Senatorial District.

“It is deeply concerning that, at a time when there is a global push for gender sensitivity, inclusiveness, and respect for fundamental human rights, especially the dignity of women in high-level public service, a female senator is being subjected to public intimidation and mistreatment.

“The treatment of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan by the Senate President is completely unacceptable.

“The NEF expresses its disappointment and strongly condemns the Senate President’s abuse of his privileged position to embarrass a fellow senator within the Senate Chamber.

“Such conduct undermines the integrity of the Senate and sets a dangerous precedent.”

Empowering Communities: A Renewable Energy Revolution in Rural Nigeria | By Muhammad Umar

In Nigeria, access to electricity remains a pressing issue, particularly in rural communities where a large percentage of the population lacks reliable and affordable energy. However, amidst these challenges, a renewable energy revolution is underway, empowering local communities and transforming lives.

Body:

1. Solar Mini-Grids:
In remote villages, solar mini-grids are making a significant impact. These decentralized systems provide clean and sustainable energy to households, schools, and healthcare centers. Through community-driven initiatives and collaborations with NGOs, solar mini-grids are replacing kerosene lamps and diesel generators, improving living conditions, and fostering economic growth.

2. Wind Energy for Productive Use:
In wind-rich regions, innovative projects are harnessing wind energy for productive use. Wind turbines power irrigation systems, mills, and small-scale industries, creating employment opportunities and enhancing agricultural productivity. These initiatives not only boost local economies but also reduce carbon emissions, contributing to Nigeria's climate goals.

3. Biomass Solutions:
In areas with abundant agricultural waste, biomass solutions are gaining traction. Biogas digesters convert organic waste into clean biogas, offering a sustainable alternative for cooking and lighting. Additionally, biomass-powered generators provide electricity for off-grid communities, reducing their dependency on fossil fuels.

The transition to renewable energy in rural Nigeria is a testament to the resilience and innovation of local communities. By embracing clean energy solutions, these communities are not only addressing energy poverty but also taking strides toward a sustainable and equitable future. As the renewable energy sector continues to grow, it is crucial for policymakers and stakeholders to support and scale up these initiatives, fostering a brighter and greener Nigeria for all.
