Bauchi may create new Emirates, Districts soon โ Gov
Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, has called for the creation of additional local government areas in the state to address the challenges posed by rapid population growth and increasing demographic pressure.
The governor said the move would enable the state to maximise its share of federal allocations and benefit more from development interventions aimed at improving livelihoods.
Mohammed made the call while receiving the report of the committee on the creation of additional Emirates, Districts, and Chiefdoms in the state.
It would be recalled that the committee, inaugurated on July 4 and chaired by former PDP Chairman, Hamza Akuyam, was mandated to study and recommend the creation of new traditional institutions to promote effective administration.
Presenting the report, Akuyam revealed that the committee received 196 memoranda โ 17 requesting new emirates, 166 for districts, while others sought the creation of chiefdoms.
Governor Mohammed commended the committee for its thorough work, saying the recommendations align with his administrationโs efforts to decentralize governance, open up ungoverned spaces, and promote inclusive development without undermining the role of traditional rulers.
He noted that the stateโs fast-growing population has made it necessary to consider the creation of more local governments to meet the increasing demand for infrastructure and basic social amenities.
The governor reaffirmed his respect for traditional institutions and assured Emirs and Chiefs across the state of his administrationโs
