Procession & Recession- What Should Be Carried?
Quick question
During a church procession or recession,
is it appropriate for clergy or ministers to carry bags?
The procession is not just movement, It is liturgical action, It is ordered worship in motion. Every step, every gesture, every item carried has meaning. People see it and read into it
What then is appropriate to carry?
During procession/recession, ministers typically carry service booklet, bulletin or leaflet, Bible (if assigned), and Liturgical items (cross, candles, Gospel book, etc.)
Carry only what is connected to the service, In proper liturgical order carrying handbags, backpacks, or personal bags visibly during procession or recession is not appropriate
Why? Because It breaks the uniformity and reverence, It shifts attention from worship to personal convenience and It disrupts the symbolic nature of the procession.
Instead, Personal items should be kept aside before the service begins thats why the church has vestry.
The procession is not the time to manage belongings, it is the time to participate in worship with focus and dignity.
Like you all know and thy we preach most on this space, In liturgy, little things matter. Because they communicate Order, Reverence and Intentionality
So when we process let everything we carry point to worship, not distraction.
