IHRAAC Comprehensive Update and Advocacy Statement - February 21st, 2024
IHRAAC is deeply troubled by the targeted ambush on the community watch corps officers in Kankara Local Government area of Katsina state. Regrettably, the Commander, Ustaz Sanusi Hassan, fell victim to this cowardly attack while returning from a successful operation in the area.
We extend our deepest condolences to the entire Community Watch Corps, as well as to the families and loved ones of Commander Ustaz Sanusi Hassan and the other officers who tragically lost their lives in the recent ambush.
Situation Overview:
1. Loss of a Dedicated Leader:
The untimely demise of Commander Ustaz Sanusi Hassan is a significant loss not only to the community watch corps but also to the entire community of Kankara and katsina state. His leadership and dedication will be sorely missed.
2. Request for Condolence:
As an organization dedicated to advocating for human rights and the protection of communities, we recognize the invaluable sacrifice made by the members of the Community Watch Corps. We kindly request that all members of the Community Watch Corps, along with their families and supporters, join us in offering our heartfelt condolences to the families of the fallen officers.
Advocacy Statement:
IHRAAC condemns in the strongest terms the heinous act of violence perpetrated against Commander Ustaz Sanusi Hassan and the community watch corps officers. This targeted attack underscores the escalating insecurity in Katsina state and the urgent need for decisive action to address the root causes of banditry and criminality.
Recommendations for Immediate Advocacy and Action:
1. Justice for Victims:
IHRAAC calls for swift and thorough investigation into the ambush, with a focus on identifying and bringing the perpetrators to justice. Those responsible must be held accountable for their actions.
2. Protection for Community Watch Corps:
Enhanced security measures should be implemented to ensure the safety and protection of community watch corps officers who put their lives on the line to safeguard their communities.
3. Support for Families:
IHRAAC extends our heartfelt condolences to the family of Commander Ustaz Sanusi Hassan and the families of other affected officers. Our thoughts are with them during this difficult time. Our honor would reach his family for remembrance, along with all corps who lose their lives.
3. Continued Advocacy for Security Reform:
IHRAAC will continue to advocate for comprehensive security reform measures aimed at addressing the underlying issues fueling insecurity in Katsina state and entireNorthwestwith similarviolence. This includes addressing economic disparities, improving governance and accountability, and strengthening law enforcement and intelligence capabilities.
