I saw my Old Classmate, felt Pity for him...

One day, I met an old Classmate. We had not seen each other for about 20 years.

When I saw him again, this time at a hotel lobby, he wore simple clothes. I felt touched.

He walked up to me and was glad to see me again. But deep within me, I was not impressed with his status compared to mine, I couldn't hide it.

We exchanged contact details, and I could see the joy in him as he collected mine.

I told him I would drop him home in my brand new Range Rover but he declined and said he had already called for his car, a 2001 Honda Accord.

I invited him the next day for lunch at my house. A part of me wanted to impress him, to show off my success while another was to discuss opportunities and possibly help him.

He drove to lekki, where I lived. He looked impressed with my house, one I had taken a heavy mortgage to acquire and thereafter we had lunch. He told me he was into small business and particularly real estate.

I brought up more business discussions, but he didn't sound too interested. I asked him how I could help him. He said he was fine. I even told him that if he was interested, I could help him secure some loans. He looked at me and smiled.

He told me he would invite me over to his place soon. His old car came for him. I was grateful to God for what I have. “All fingers are not equal," I thought to myself.

Two weeks later, my wife and I went to see him in a remote area. Initially, my wife was reluctant to go because she was not impressed with the man's status to warrant our visiting him in his house.

I was able to convince her that we were close friends in college.

We saw the estate in Abule Egba . We asked for directions to his home. Those leading us spoke of his name with deference.

It was a simple but lovely home. A 4-bedroom bungalow. I saw 4 cars parked in front. We entered his house. It was simply elegant, he welcomed us warmly.

Lunch was well served, his wife calls him Megida .

During lunch, he asked about my MD. He said they were friends. I saw a company gift on one of his tables nearby. That company owned about 38% shares where I worked. He told me he owned the company. He also owned the Estate.

I did not know when I called him, Sir. I was in awe of him, too.

I had learnt a lesson in humility, a Big one. Appearances are deceptive. He noticed my discomfort.

Driving back home, I was very quiet. My wife was humbled and extremely calm. I could perceive the thoughts in her mind. I looked at myself. Living on loans, heavy loans, and showing off while someone who pays my salary is quite modest and living a simple life.

ORDINARY NIGERIANS SHOULD FEEL IMPACT OF COMING OUT OF RECESSION—PRESIDENT BUHARI

President Muhammadu Buhari Tuesday in Daura, Katsina State, said the real impact of coming out recession will be better felt when ordinary Nigerians experience a change in their living conditions.

President Buhari, who received the President of Niger, Alhaji Mahamadou Issoufou, at his country home in Daura, told newsmen that he was “very happy’’ to hear the country was finally out of recession, adding that the real gain should be improved conditions for Nigerians.

Responding to questions from newsmen, the President said, “Certainly I should be happy for what it is worth. I am looking forward to ensuring that the ordinary Nigerian feels the impact.’’

President Buhari commended all the managers of the economy for their hard work and commitment, stressing that more work needed to be done to improve the growth rate.

He also said, “Until coming out of recession translates into meaningful improvement in peoples’ lives, our work cannot be said to be done.’’

In his remarks, the Nigerien President said he was most delighted to see President Buhari in good health, praying that the almighty God would continue to strengthen him.

President Issoufou said he used the opportunity of the visit to discuss some bilateral and regional issues with President Buhari, which included the fight against Boko Haram, the economic challenges in the Lake Chad Basin and other developmental concerns that directly affect the livelihood of the citizens of both countries.

The Nigerien President was accompanied on the visit by a former Prime Minister, Dr.Hamid Algabid, and the President of the Economic, Social and Cultural Council of Niger, Moussa Moumouni Djermakoye.

What Amaechi told me about APC leaders’ emergency meeting with Buhari – Dele Momodu

Ovation publisher and media mogul, Dele Momodu has revealed that he spoke with Minister of Transport, Rotimi Amaechi about their emergency meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari on Sunday. Amaechi visited the ailing President in the Abuja House, London along with Kaduna state Governor Nasir El-Rufai, the chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) John Oyegun and Governor of Imo state, Rochas Okorocha. Momodu, writing on his Twitter page late on Sunday, admitted that he had a video call with the former Rivers Governor, to confirm the visit and also ask about Buhari’s wellbeing. He wrote: “The Biblical Thomas could easily have been a Nigerian as we doubt everything; just had a video call with ROTIMI AMAECHI in London. “ROTIMI AMAECHI has confirmed to me in a video call minutes ago that he and other APC Chieftains indeed met with President Buhari this noon. “The video call became necessary when I got strident calls from those doubting the authenticity of the media release from FEMI ADESINA. ”Reacting to a user who asked him what Amaechi told him, Momodu tweeted: “The President is in great spirit. Nothing different from what the Acting President told Nigerians after a similar visit. “I didn’t start this job today, My source is solid and impeccable; Amaechi won’t confirm if untrue, he will keep mute!”

Professor Charles Soludo, a former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), has said that the present government inherited a bad economy.

“To be fair, this government inherited a bad economy,” Soludo said at an economic talk shop, organised by the Vanguard newspapers.

“The previous government had an unprecedented rate of debt accumulation, even at a time of unprecedented oil boom and was even depleting our foreign reserves instead of doubling the reserves.

“Insecurity, especially in the north-east was very high, and corruption was pervasive,” he added.
Presently, he said, the size of nation’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) has shrunk because of the economic recession.

At an economic talk shop, organised by the Vanguard newspapers, Soludo said the GDP shrunk from about $575 billion to about $354 billion.
In his estimation, the GDP is even much lower than $232 billion, using the parallel market exchange rate.

“In the previous 16 years, Nigeria’s GDP more than doubled in U.S. dollar terms.

“But in less than two years, depending on the exchange rate you use, we have more than reduced the value to less than 50 per cent of what we met, in less than two years, in U.S. dollar terms.”

According to him, the foreign exchange control has damaged business confidence and private investments, with massive capital flight.
He said that it had also driven the macro economy into recession making most macro variables worsened in the last two years.

He said the inflation rate has increased about nine per cent to about 19 per cent, unemployment from 7.5 per cent to 14 per cent.
Soludo also said that the situation called for a state of emergency with a progressive plan to lay the foundation for a post-oil economy.

“We would get out of recession any moment from now, with oil price increasing.”

He said it would be a miracle if the government was able to return the GDP in US dollar terms back to the level it met it, even by 2023.

He commended the Federal Government on the unveiling of the Economic Recovery and Growth Plan (ERGP).

Soludo said that the ERGP could still be expanded on how the economic diversification can be actualised..

“But it would take all hands to be on the deck to be able to pull out.,” he said.

He said that the present government had tried in blocking loopholes and stopping insurgency but solving the foreign exchange volatilities had remained a challenge.

The talk shop had other speakers, including Mr. Adams Oshiomhole, former governor of Edo State; Dr Kayode Fayemi, also a former governor and Minister of Steel and Solid Minerals; Mr. Issa Aremu, the deputy president of the Nigerian Labour Congress.

The talk shop with the theme, “ The Hard Facts to Rescue the Nigerian Economy” was moderated by Mr. Fola Adeola, the founding managing director of Guaranty Trust Bank.
