Chemistry Basics!

What is a Compound?
A compound is a substance formed when two or more different elements are chemically bonded together.

Examples:

1. Water (H₂O) ✓
2.
composed of hydrogen and oxygen atoms.

2. Salt (NaCl) ✓
composed of sodium and chlorine atoms.

3. Carbon Dioxide (CO₂) ✓ composed of carbon and oxygen atoms.

4. Ammonia (NH₃) ✓ composed of nitrogen and hydrogen atoms.

5. Sugar (C₁₂H₂₂O₁₁) ✓
composed of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen atoms.

Understanding compounds helps us appreciate the world around us!

"Atomicity in Chemistry!

What is Atomicity?
Atomicity refers to the number of atoms present in one molecule of an element.

Types of Atomicity:

🔹 Monatomic 1 atom per molecule
(e.g., He, Ne, Ar)

🔹 Diatomic 2 atoms per molecule
(e.g., H₂, N₂, O₂, Cl₂)

🔹 Triatomic 3 atoms per molecule
(e.g., O₃ ozone)

🔹 Polyatomic: 4 or more atoms per molecule (e.g.,
P₄ phosphorus
S₈ sulfur)

Examples:

🔹 Helium (He)✓
Single atoms (Monatomic)

🔹 Oxygen (O₂)✓

Two oxygen atoms bonded (Diatomic)

🔹 Ozone (O₃)✓

Three oxygen atoms bonded (Triatomic)

🔹 Phosphorus (P₄):✓

Four phosphorus atoms in a tetrahedron (Polyatomic)

Understanding atomicity helps us grasp molecular structure and property

"Monoatomic Molecules!

What are Monoatomic Molecules?
Monoatomic molecules consist of a single atom, meaning they are not bonded to any other atoms.

Examples✓

1. Noble Gases:

- Helium (He)✓

- Neon (Ne)✓

- Argon (Ar)✓

- Krypton (Kr)✓

- Xenon (Xe)✓

- Radon (Rn)✓

These elements are stable as single atoms and don't typically form bonds with other atoms.

Know the Difference!

Physical Change vs Chemical Change

Physical Change:✓

A change in form or appearance, but chemical composition remains the same.
Examples: Melting of ice, crushing a can

Chemical Change:✓

A change in chemical composition, resulting in a new substance.

Examples: Burning of wood, rusting of iron

Key Difference✓

Physical changes are reversible,
while
chemical changes are often irreversible.

Physical Change
Definition: Alters the form or state of matter without creating new substances
Examples:
1. Melting ice: Solid water (ice) , liquid water (still H₂O).

2. Tearing paper: Paper size/shape changes, but it’s still paper.

Chemical Change
Definition:Forms new substances with different properties through chemical reactions.
Examples:
1. Rusting iron: Iron (Fe) + Oxygen (O₂) and Rust (Fe₂O₃), a new compound.

2. Baking a cake:
Ingredients (flour, eggs, etc.) react to form a new substance (cake).

Remember

Physical changes are usually reversible
(e.g., freezing water back into ice).
Chemical changes create new matter (e.g., ash from burned wood).

Chemistry Basics: Relative Molar Mass"

What is Relative Molar Mass?

Relative Molar Mass (Mr)

The relative molar mass of a substance is the ratio of the average mass of one molecule or formula unit of the substance to one-twelfth the mass of one atom of carbon-12.

Mathematically, it's calculated by summing the relative atomic masses (Ar) of all the atoms in a molecule or formula unit.

Relative Molar Mass (Mr) = Σ Ar of all atoms in the molecule/formula unit.

Examples:

1. Water (H2O) - Relative molar mass:
Solution
H = 1 and O = 16
H20 = (1 × 2) + 16)
H20 = (2 +16)
H20 = 18

2. Carbon dioxide (CO2) - Relative molar mass:
Solution
C = 12 and O = 16

CO2 = (12 + (16 × 2)

CO2 =( 12 + 32)

CO2 = 44

Question for You!
What's the relative molar mass of Methane (CH4)

A) 12
B) 16
C) 20
