Rumors of a FIFA investigation into the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo) for fielding an ineligible player, specifically Aaron Wan-Bissaka, appear to be unfounded speculation. A senior FIFA official dismissed these claims, stating no official protest had been received from any federation, including Nigeria's.
Status of the Allegations
No Official Protest: According to a senior FIFA official, no formal complaint or protest has been lodged by any other national federation regarding DR Congo's player eligibility.
Player Eligibility Confirmed: Aaron Wan-Bissaka, the player at the center of the rumors, received official FIFA approval for his nationality switch to DR Congo on August 22, 2025. This clearance was issued months before the matches in question, making him fully eligible to represent the team in the CAF World Cup playoffs.
Rumors Dismissed: The speculation largely originated from disappointed Nigerian fans and social media reports after DR Congo defeated Nigeria in a penalty shootout during the playoff final. FIFA officials criticized the speculation, emphasizing that there is no legal basis for challenging Wan-Bissaka's participation.
DR Congo won the final playoff match against Nigeria via a penalty shootout on November 16, 2025, and secured their spot in the next stage of World Cup qualification.
