Enough is enough!! 5 Nigerian home decor trends we need to let go of!

04/02/2026

A young, beautiful, and talented young woman lost her life after being bitten by a forest cobra inside her own room.
But beyond the snakebite itself, we need to talk about the uncomfortable truth: how everyday Nigerian behavior helps create these tragedies.

When snakes are pushed out of their natural habitats, they don’t disappear — they relocate, often into our homes.
This wasn’t just an “unfortunate incident.” It’s a consequence of neglect, weak systems, and a culture of reacting only after loss.
May her soul rest in peace. And may her death force us to finally take responsibility for the environments we create.

One thing I’ve recently learned with our on going hot weather is that you do not have to limit yourself to growing house plants that require shade outdoors , but instead adapt your garden and plant choices based on the shade or sunlight conditions it receives.

If you garden is very shady, then grow houseplants, aroids, leafy shade loving plants

If your garden has no shade and is exposed to the sun ( like many urban gardens ) then grow more of sun loving plants, like this Potulaca and succulents.

Your garden should also be based on your personal requirements. For example if you do not have access to water, or perhaps have a balcony or veranda where you can’t water often or even want to . Then stick to drought tolerant plants.

It’s important to have a practical garden that works for you rather than collecting plants because they are unique, popular or rare .

More will be revealed in my upcoming outdoor gardening workshop.

Hope you’re having a lovely day
