There’s a Nigerian Pastor who did something uncommon that helps him keel the flesh and quest for material possessions.

He runs one of the largest denominations in Nigeria. But every 7 years, he moves to a new city or country to open a new branch of his Church.

He would stay there for 7 years; teaching, raising leaders and disciplining them. When his 7-year tenure there comes to an end, he would move to another city or country.

Here’s where it gets interesting.

When moving to a new city or country, he takes nothing with him. He instructs his mega branches not to send a dime to his personal account and they obey that.

A time came that he moved to Ghana to open a branch of his Church there. On arrival, he had only $100 left.

What can $100 do for a General Overseer with branches all over the world? Even as an individual, $100 can barely take care of my weekly expenses. But this man soaked it up and kept trusting God.

He would go out, preach and return to his apartment with only bread to eat.

If he turned hunger to fasting and prayer at the early days of his ministry, it can be understandable but at that height in his ministry, that’s a huge sacrifice.

Every day, he lives as though he’s an upcoming minister who’s passionately devoted to his calling.

A day came, he visited one of his long-serving Pastors in his branch in Ikeja—a very big branch.

He announced to the entire Church that from today henceforth, he has handed over the leadership and ownership of this branch to the resident Pastor.

The land, the Church building, equipment, money in the bank, members and everything now belongs to the resident Pastor. He added that if you still wish to stay under his ministry, a new branch will be opened in another part of Ikeja but if you wish to stay under your resident Pastor, the name of the Church is now changed.

What a great way to settle, release and commission a Pastor who served him selflessly and passionately.

The last time I met with this Resident Pastor was when he came to Aba to open a branch of the Church for his principal. He opened the Church, moved it to the permanent site before he was transferred to Lagos.

In a society where people want you to serve their own ministry forever and leave with nothing, it’s okay to celebrate anyone who dares to be different.

In case you still don’t know who I’m talking about here, let me come out plain.

The name of the General Overseer is Pastor David Ogbueli and the name of his Church is Dominion City. The name of the Resident Pastor he handed over the Ikeja branch of his Church to is Rev Dubus Achufusi.

Why am I sharing this?

It’s not every time viral news about the Church in Nigeria and Africa at large should be centred on scandals, doctrinal arguments and attacks on prayers. We should not act like we are not seeing great but humble men making sacrifices that are rare.

The arrest of a 15-year-old boy in Australia in connection with a knife attack on a bishop and his followers at an Orthodox Assyrian church in Sydney has been declared a “terrorist” act by police, who suspect religious extremism as the motivation.

During a service at Christ The Good Shepherd Church on Monday evening, Bishop Mar Mari Emmanuel and a priest were wounded in the assault, which was livestreamed. Both victims are expected to recover.

Police arrested the teenager at the scene and were forced to hold him at the church for his own safety as an angry crowd of the bishop’s followers gathered outside.

The crowd went on to clash with the police for more than three hours, demanding that the attacker be handed over to them.

Emergency crews said they treated 30 people for riot-related injuries.
New South Wales Police Commissioner Karen Webb, speaking to reporters on Tuesday, said the suspect’s comments pointed to a religious motive for the attack.

“We’ll allege there’s a degree of premeditation on the basis that this person has travelled to that location, which is not near his residential address, he has travelled with a knife and subsequently the bishop and the priest have been stabbed,” Webb said. “They’re lucky to be alive.”

She added, “After consideration of all the material, I declared that it was a terrorist incident.”

The Australian Security Intelligence Organisation (ASIO), the nation’s main domestic spy agency, and Australian Federal Police have joined state police in a counterterrorism task force to investigate whether anyone else was involved.

Mike Burgess, the director-general of ASIO, in rare public comments said that the boy appeared to have acted alone and there was no immediate need to raise the country’s terror threat level.

“At this stage, it looks like the actions of an individual,” he said. “At this point, there is no indication of anyone else involved, but that remains an open investigation.”
