MAJOR POLITICAL GAMBLE?

Dr. Alex Otti’s administration may be walking into a major political test in Abia State with the latest restrictions on commercial tricycle operations, popularly known as Keke.

I understand the argument for security, traffic management and a more organised transportation system. But the bigger question is:

What happens to the thousands of people whose daily income depends on Keke?

And more importantly, what happens to the ordinary Abian who depends on Keke because it is affordable, accessible and available almost everywhere?

The government has talked about alternative transportation, including plans for buses and CNG-powered tricycles. (West Africa Weekly) But the success of this policy will depend heavily on whether those alternatives are actually available, affordable and sufficient before people are pushed out of their means of livelihood.

Politics is approaching, and transport unions are not a group any politician should underestimate.

So let me ask Abians:

Do you think Governor Otti is making the right move, or is this a political miscalculation that could hurt his administration at the polls?

And if you support the ban, what alternative should the government provide for the affected operators and commuters?
