The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) governor, Godwin Emefiele, governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has said banks will continue to accept old naira notes after the stipulated deadline.

Emefiele spoke on Tuesday, January 31, 2023, when he appeared at an interactive session with the house of representatives ad hoc committee on the currency redesign and naira swap policy.

He said the CBN will also accept the old naira from banks after the February 10 deadline.

Emefiele made reference to the CBN act mandates the apex bank to continue to accept old notes after it’s expiration.

Section 20 (3) of the CBN act states: “Notwithstanding sub-sections (1) and (2) of this section, the bank shall have power, if directed to do so by the president and after giving reasonable notice in that behalf, to call in any of its notes or coins on payment of the face value thereof and any note or coin with respect to which a notice has been given under this sub-section, shall, on the expiration of the notice, cease to be legal tender, but, subject to section 22 of this act, shall be redeemed by the bank upon demand

The Nigerian Security Printing and Minting (NSPM) Plc has explained reasons why redesigned naira notes leave ink when rubbed on white surfaces.

The company, also referred to as The MINT, is responsible for producing the naira, Nigeria’s currency.

In a statement on Friday, January 6, 2022, signed by Ahmed. A. Halilu, its managing director, NSPM said its attention has been drawn to various clips, skits, concerns and comments on diverse platforms regarding the quality of the redesigned notes.

On November 23, the new notes — N200, N500 and N1000 — were launched, and banks began to dispense the redesigned currency denominations on December 15, 2022.

Addressing misconceptions about the quality of the new naira notes, Halilu said they were of the same substrates as the existing ones and passed through the same printing processes and finishing procedures.

“It is, therefore, basically the same as the other notes in circulation,” he explained.

The NSPM managing director also said the new naira notes leave traces of intaglio inks when rubbed on plain white surfaces.

This, he said, was a it’s security feature which makes it easy to identify fake currency.

“It is, however, important to note that new banknotes are generally light when issued, then become heavier in circulation on getting in contact with dirt and moisture,” Halilu added.

“In addition, the second stage of currency printing (intaglio) requires a heavy deposit of special inks with fairly large particles to give a tactile feeling of the portraits as well as other raised prints by way of design.

“One of the properties of intaglio inks is non-solubility in water and ease of transfer (light stain) on plain white materials owing to the size of the particles.

“This is generally a security feature of all banknotes that easily differentiates them from forged or counterfeited notes.”

Halilu further said the best international practices have been deployed in the production of the new naira notes, adding that his agency would continue to ensure that it meets international standards.

“The naira is our legal tender and national symbol. We, therefore, urge Nigerians and other users of the naira banknotes not to su

The National Association of Nigeria Students (NANS) have lamented the hike in public universities saying it may increase insecurity in the country.

This is coming from the national vice president of the association (for special duties), Suleiman Muhammad-Sarki, who spoke on the fee hike at a news conference in Maiduguri.

According to him, the students’ association is calling for a downward review of the fee, adding that most of the students “can’t afford it.”

The recent hike in registration charges by some Nigerian universities does not come to us as a surprise but as an affront to war against insurgency, banditry and kidnapping.

“Students who are unable to pay the new fee might end up becoming dropouts and this will add to the rising number of youth restiveness in Nigeria.

“[This] may also in return increase the number of insurgents, bandits, and kidnappers.

As a student who paid N30,000 last session, I could not afford to pay N74,000 now expected from the latest increase, and I may be forced to quit studies.”

The unionist urged the government and other stakeholders to intervene to enable indigent students to access quality education.

Earlier, Ahmed Lawan, UNIMAID registrar, announced an upward review of registration fees and other charges.

“The action is as a result of the rising cost of laboratory items, teaching and learning materials,” he said.

Meanwhile, the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has tackled President Muhammadu Buhari’s led All Progressive Congress (APC) administration over the recently revised registration fees for undergraduate students by Universities.

NNPP gubernatorial candidate in Jigawa State, Malam Aminu Ibrahim Ringim stated this on Tuesday, January 3, 2022, after presenting flags to the candidates of the Jigawa North West Senatorial zone at Gumel.

He said the APC administration had made life miserable for Nigerian citizens by creating unnecessary poverty through its impoverished policies and programs.

According to him” Universities have increased their registration fees, making it difficult for the poor families to send their children to universities or complete their studies”
