Defense Headquarters Directs Immediate Removal Of Non-Essential Static Military Roadblocks And Checkpoints Nationwide

The Nigerian Defense Headquarters has directed the immediate removal of non-essential static military roadblocks and checkpoints nationwide. This move is aimed at enhancing security and facilitating the free movement of people and goods.

According to reports, Defence Minister Christopher Musa announced that police officers and personnel of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) will take over checkpoint duties from the military, allowing soldiers to focus on confronting terrorists and other security threats in the bush.

This development is expected to improve the overall security situation in the country and reduce the harassment of motorists and citizens at checkpoints.

Lekki Toll Gate ‘massacre’ report fake news, Lai Mohammed iINSISTS

A former Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, has again dismissed claims of a “massacre” at the Lekki Toll Gate during the 2020 EndSARS protests, insisting the narrative was driven by fake news and unverified reports amplified on social media.

Mohammed said this during an interview on ARISE News on Wednesday while speaking about his new book, Headlines and Soundbites: Media Moments That Defined an Administration.

According to him, one of the major crises of his tenure was battling misinformation, especially during EndSARS.

“EndSARS was unfortunate, it was tragic, but that there was a massacre at the tollgate is fake news,” he said

He insisted that no family has come forward in five years to report a missing relative linked to the Lekki protest.

“If a man has a goat and the goat does not come home one night, he will go out and look for that goat. Now, five years on today, nobody has come to tell us that my son or my ward went to the tollgate and didn’t come back,” he added.

Mohammed said CNN’s reporting on the incident was based on “second-hand information,” adding that he stands by the criticism he issued at the time.

“Nobody ever said nobody died during the EndSARS. People died even in Abuja. They died in Lagos. They died in Kano. But what we were saying is that CNN was not at the tollgate. CNN relied on second-hand thought and information,” he stated.

The former minister said the Buhari administration believed unregulated social media had become a national threat and frequently fueled misinformation.

“One of the jobs of a communicator, one of the biggest challenges, is how do you prevent fake news and misinformation from overshadowing the real facts?” he asked.

Mohammed defended the 2021 suspension of Twitter, describing it as a difficult but necessary step to curb harmful content.

The Lekki Toll Gate incident occurred on October 20, 2020, during the nationwide EndSARS protests against police brutality in Nigeria.

Protesters had gathered peacefully at the toll gate in Lagos when security forces reportedly opened fire, resulting in casualties and widespread panic.

While official accounts and independent investigations have differed on the number of deaths, the event became a major flashpoint, sparking national and international debate over police conduct, human rights, and government transparency.

President Tinubu commends Nigeria's Armed Forces for protecting democracy in Benin Republic

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has commended the gallantry of Nigeria's military on Sunday for responding swiftly to the request by the Government of Benin Republic to save its 35-year-old democracy from coup plotters who struck at dawn today.

Acting on two separate requests from the Government of Benin, President Tinubu first ordered Nigerian Air Force fighter jets to enter the country and take over the airspace to help dislodge the coup plotters from the National TV and a military camp where they had regrouped.

The Republic of Benin, through its Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in a Note Verbal, requested immediate Nigerian air support "in view of the urgency and seriousness of the situation and to safeguard the constitutional order, protect national institutions and ensure the security of the population."

In the second request, the authorities in Benin requested the deployment of Nigerian Air Force assets within Beninoise airspace for surveillance and rapid intervention operations under Benin-led coordination.

The Benin government also requested Nigerian ground forces, "strictly for missions approved by the Beninese Command authority in support of the protection of constitutional institutions and the containment of armed Groups."

Nigeria's Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Oluyede, said all the requests have been fulfilled, with Nigerian ground forces now in Benin.

"Ours is to comply with the order of the Commander-in-Chief of our armed forces, President Tinubu," he said.

Constitutional order was upended in the Republic of Benin, Nigeria's neighbour, when some soldiers led by Colonel Pascal Tigri announced a coup on Sunday morning. The putschists seized the National TV and claimed they had toppled President Patrice Talon and suspended all democratic institutions.

It took some hours before the government's loyal forces, assisted by Nigeria, took control and flushed out the coup plotters from the National TV.

In his remarks after the restoration of the democratic and constitutional order, President Tinubu saluted the Nigerian armed forces for standing firm as a protector and defender of democracy.

“Today, the Nigerian armed forces stood gallantly as a defender and protector of constitutional order in the Republic of Benin on the invitation of the government. Our armed forces acted within the ambit of the ECOWAS Protocol on Democracy and Good Governance. They have helped stabilise a neighbouring country and have made us proud of their commitment to sustaining our democratic values and ideals since 1999. Nigeria stands firmly with the government and people of the Republic of Benin."

Alleged sexual harassment: Akpabio slams ₦200bn suit on Natasha

This gives me the chance to prove my harassment claims- Akpoti-Uduaghan

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has filed a ₦200 billion defamation lawsuit against Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan over her allegations that he sexually harassed her. The case, lodged at the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) under Motion No. M/12725/2025, seeks major damages, public apologies, and the removal of all online content containing the allegations.

Akpoti-Uduaghan confirmed receiving the suit on Thursday, stating:

“Today, being the 5th day of December 2025, I’m in receipt of the newly instituted ₦200 billion suit against me by Senator Godswill Akpabio claiming defamation on sexual harassment.”

She said she welcomed the legal action, recalling that the Senate Committee on Ethics and Privileges had earlier refused to hear her petition.

She added: “I am glad Sen. Akpabio has now brought this to court because the Senate Committee on Ethics and Privileges denied me audience, saying his wife had filed a defamatory case against me, and therefore they could not take up a matter already before the court.”

Court documents seen on Thursday show that Akpabio accuses the Kogi Central senator of making public statements in interviews on TV, radio, and online that portrayed him as someone who used his office for personal and inappropriate gains. He claims these allegations were consumed by “millions of Nigerians,” causing him severe reputational damage, embarrassment, and emotional distress.

The suit seeks retractions across major media outlets, deletion of all online materials containing the allegations, repeated public apologies on leading media platforms, and ₦200 billion in damages.

The court filings also indicate that Akpabio filed an ex parte motion in December to serve the suit through substituted means after efforts to serve Akpoti-Uduaghan directly were unsuccessful.

FG urges ICAN to support Tinubu’s economic reforms

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, has urged the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) to support the reform agenda of the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu administration.

The Minister made the call while receiving a delegation of the ICAN, led by the President, Malam Malam Haruna Nma Yahaya, who paid him a courtesy visit at the Radio House, Abuja, on Friday.

“The promotion of accurate information, public orientation, and responsible governance is central to the inherent values of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda. It is in this regard that we call on ICAN to support the ongoing reforms of this administration, and in light of the new tax policy that will commence from January 2026, we urge that you champion the cause in your financial and professional sphere,” said the Minister.

He stated that President Tinubu’s reform agenda is anchored on responsible leadership, fiscal discipline, economic transformation, digitisation of government processes, and a transparent interface with citizens.

“Reforms must not only work, but citizens must also clearly understand them. This is why collaboration with reputable professional bodies like ICAN is essential. We welcome your expertise as partners in public communication, public financial management, and civic orientation. Together, we will build transparency, restore public trust, and strengthen national institutions,” Idris said.

The Minister offered ICAN access to the Federal Government’s public information platforms, including state-owned media organisations and national orientation channels, to support financial literacy, ethical leadership campaigns, and public enlightenment on economic reforms. He further proposed collaboration on research-based policy communication, capacity building for civil servants, and public education that demystifies technical economic issues for everyday Nigerians.

He commended ICAN for its longstanding role in upholding ethical standards and promoting best practices in both the public and private sectors, adding that such professionalism is essential to strengthening Nigeria’s reform agenda.

ICAN President, Malam Yahaya, commended the Ministry for its role in promoting national cohesion and transparency, noting that building trust in government is critical to the success of economic reforms.

He said the Ministry has “restored urgency to public engagement and strengthened clarity in government communication,” while praising the Media and Information Literacy Institute designation, digital public service reforms, and the revitalised national communication strategy under the Minister’s leadership.

He added that ICAN is fully committed to using its platforms, including its nationwide ICAN on the Air programme, to translate government reforms into simplified, citizen-friendly messages, expand financial literacy, and support ethical governance.

The Minister assured the Institute that the Federal Government remains committed to fostering constructive partnerships with professional bodies to deliver reforms that are transparent, people-centred, and accountable.
