ETO ADURA: WHAT OUR FATHERS TAUGHT US VS. WHAT IT HAS BECOME
I laugh when people talk about Eto and conclude that I am condemning it because I do not understand it. Honestly, that is almost a joke—a high one at that.
I am not a prophet, but I know what Eto is. Our fathers introduced us to different expressions of it: Eto Adura, Iṣẹ́ Wòlí, and others. But there was something they were intentional about. They kept sounding one message in our ears:
JESUS IS THE ONLY SOLUTION.
So, what is Eto Adura?
In those days, when someone had a serious or complicated problem, a prophet could engage in a prolonged spiritual journey with that person. It might last three days or even longer. Sometimes it happened in the church, in what we called igbélé/àbò; sometimes it could be on a mountain, by the seaside, or in another secluded place.
During that period, there could be structured hourly prayers—6 a.m., 9 a.m., 12 noon, 3 p.m., 6 p.m., 9 p.m., midnight, 3 a.m., and so on—until the period of igbélé was completed.
The person could also be given portions of Scripture to study, meditate upon, and pray with. Fasting could accompany the process.
That is the idea behind Eto Adura: a deliberate spiritual discipline of seeking God concerning a matter.
The problem begins when people stop waiting on God for instruction and start creating a solution account book—a catalogue of methods, objects, prayers, times, rivers, mountains, or procedures which they believe must produce a particular result.
And this is where the matter becomes dangerous.
God can give the prophet a specific instructions to use during that time for victory over the matter and it will happen. People then started writing those this and with time waiting on God becomes heavier as they now depend on what was written yesterday.
Whenever anyone come with same issue, they do not bother to hear from God and it got to a point that people no longer see the need to pray along with the prophet but rather pay him to do all the spiritual work. He sha want to see results and that's what led to all the problems today.
God can use a method, but the method must never become God.
And that is where I believe we need to have an honest conversation about Eto.
