Ouril is more than a game in Africa—it's a tradition passed down through generations.

Played with seeds and strategy, it brings people together in homes, streets, and markets.

A symbol of wisdom, patience, and connection.

The Luba people of Central Africa (in present-day Democratic Republic of the Congo) preserved their history through oral traditions, art, and symbolic objects rather than written records. Here’s how:

1. Oral Tradition Professional historians called bambudye (members of the Mbudye Society) memorized and recited royal genealogies, laws, and historical events.

2. Lukasa Memory Boards These wooden boards with beads, shells, and carvings served as "memory devices." Each element represented a story, king, or event, helping historians recall details.

3. Art & Sculpture Statues, stools, and ceremonial objects depicted kings and heroes, reinforcing cultural memory.

4. Secret Societies Groups like the Mbudye safeguarded knowledge, passing it down through rituals.

Unlike written records, Luba history was dynamic, adapting with each retelling while keeping core traditions alive.

Traditional Clothing of the Ovaherero Women of Namibia

The Ovaherero, also known as the Herero, are a Bantu ethnic group found in Namibia and parts of Angola. They speak Otjiherero and once followed a belief system called Okuruuo, which connected them to their ancestors and to Ndjambi o i, the supreme being. Today, most Herero people identify as Christians.

Between 1904 and 1908, the German Empire carried out a genocide against the Ovaherero and Nama peoples. Over 100,000 Ovaherero were killed. Many survivors fled to Botswana and South Africa, where their descendants still live.

Ovaherero women wear a traditional dress called the Ohorokova. It is often worn with a headdress known as Otjikaiva or Ekori. The headdress symbolises respect for cows, which have long been central to Ovaherero life and survival.
