We are calling all Women, Feminists, Activists and Allies to join us in spreading awareness about Femicide and also March to the Lagos state House of Assembly to present a bill on Femicide to the legislators.
Femicide is a distinct form of Gender Based Violence. It is the intentional killing of a woman
, by a man because of her gender and it is Usually perpetrated by intimate partner or family members.
Because Nigeria Law does not legally recognize Femicide, many acts of gender related killings of women and girls are misruled as ritualistic killing or organ harvesting.
In both the Violence against persons prohibition act and the Lagos state Law on protection against domestic violence, there’s no mention of Femicide which is death of a woman characterized by a history of domestic violence or sexual abuse.
Examples also include women who died in pregnancy/ post delivery when there was history of abuse during pregnancy, killings occurring in situations of trafficking in persons , forced labor or killings where the bodies of victims are disposed of in public places.
That’s why we are asking you to join us to
