LIFETIME HONOUR THROUGH THE LENS

Two days ago, I was deeply honoured to receive the Lifetime Achievement Award for Impact Through Visual Storytelling at the 10th edition of NiPHEC – the Nigerian Photography Expo & Conference.
From capturing still images of everyday life in Abeokuta to documenting the pulse of Yoruba culture through cinema, this journey has always been about more than just the camera. It’s about using the lens — still or moving — to tell stories with soul, to preserve who we are, and to give voice to those often unheard.
I dedicate this award to the people, the culture, and all my collaborators over the decades. You’ve made this journey worthwhile.
May we all continue to use our art not just to reflect beauty, but to provoke thought, honour heritage, and speak truth to power.

And just like that — the final take was magic!

Two days ago, we filmed our closing interview of the Alára documentary… with the woman herself. Reni Folawiyo.
48 minutes of pure grace, laughter, truth, and storytelling. It was the last setup in a week-long, whirlwind filming schedule — and somehow, she made it all feel effortless. That’s the Reni effect: charm in motion, elegance without trying.
The crew was inspired, the lights behaved, and even the lens seemed to smile. After the shoot, her incredible team made sure we were treated like royalty — and NOK sealed the moment with what might be the best lunch we’ve had all week (and that’s saying something).
On behalf of the entire crew, thank you, Reni, for being a star in every sense.
We look forward to more magic with Alára in the days to come.

TK’s Speech at KAP FILM VILLAGE and RESORT OFFICIAL OPENING - Igbojaye Sat. April 12, 2025.

Distinguished Ladies and Gentlemen,
I am not here by myself—I stand as a representative of our ancestors, who entrusted us with a culture so rich, so vibrant, it continues to inspire generations. One of my favourites remains the Egungun masquerade—those mystical performers under masks who not only thrilled us, but also fed us, clothed us, and united us during the festivals of our youth.

Today, I salute the Heroes of the Yoruba Travelling Theatre—men, women, and even children—who journeyed across the country, using their art to entertain, enlighten, and awaken political consciousness long before Nollywood was conceived.

The opening of the KAP Film Village and Resort is the realisation of a long-held dream. It is a bold testament to the vision of our forebears, and a beacon of what is possible when we embrace and invest in our intangible heritage.

Let this place stand as a symbol—not just for Nigeria—but for all of Africa, of what we can achieve when culture and creativity lead the way.
Congratulations, Kunle Afolayan, on this monumental achievement. I have no doubt that somewhere, Adeyemi Afolayan is smiling and saying, “Ayodeji Akande, I told you; this is just the beginning.”

A GOLDBERG GOLDEN Night in Oyo!
After the coronation of Alaafin Ọba Hakeem Abimbola Owoade, celebrations lit up Oyo—but the highlight was Goldberg’s unforgettable after-party under the ỌMỌLÚWÀBÍ banner.
With stunning lights, world-class stage design, and powerful live sets from Fuji icon Saheed Osupa and Apala maestro Musiliu Haruna Ishola, the night was a vibrant tribute to Yoruba culture.
I was honoured to pick the winning tickets during the raffle draw—what a moment!
A truly magical night that danced into dawn.

This past Saturday, April 5, 2025, marked the unforgettable climax of The Return of the Alaafin—a monumental cultural and historical event I had the honour of documenting. Over 50 years ago, I was a young trainee cameraman recording the coronation of the late Alaafin, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi III. Now, alongside filmmaker Rahman Oladigbolu, I’ve returned to Oyo to film the coronation of his successor, Ọba Hakeem Abimbola Owoade.

The Oyo State Government and Local Organising Committee did the near-impossible—welcoming thousands with grace, splendour, and precision. But it was the cultural showcase by Goldberg under their ỌMỌLÚWÀBÍ platform that truly lit up the night. With Fuji legend Saheed Osupa and Apala maestro Musiliu Haruna Isola on stage, the celebration became a vibrant symbol of Yoruba pride.

Even more special—I was invited on stage to pick the winning raffle tickets, a joyous highlight in an already magical evening.

With Goldberg’s support, our documentary can become more than a film—it can be a timeless tribute to Yoruba heritage and artistic brilliance.
