The Woman Who Originated the , Present in All Nigerian Military Barracks 😍
This is the remarkable story of Mammy Maria Ochefu, the woman behind the famous "Mammy Market," a staple in every Nigerian military barrack.
Mammy Ochefu was the wife of Col. Anthony Ochefu. While living at the military barracks in Enugu, she started selling soft drinks and a locally brewed beverage called Kunu to keep busy and make a living. Her drinks became popular, drawing soldiers to her home.
However, complaints about the Kunu attracting flies led her to temporarily stop. This didn’t last long, as soldiers’ demand for her drinks prompted a colonel to set up a dedicated space behind the barracks for Mammy to continue her business in a more hygienic environment.
As her business flourished, other women in the barracks were inspired by her success and began selling various goods at the same location. This area became known as the Mammy Market.
As Mammy Ochefu and her husband were transferred to different states, she would always establish a Mammy Market in each new barracks. When leaving for the next state, she’d entrust the market to other women but made sure the name remained.
Today, Mammy Markets are present in all Nigerian military barracks, thanks to Mammy Ochefu’s entrepreneurial spirit. She now resides in Otukpo, Benue State, following the death of her husband.
