Macronutrients are the key elements that plants require in order to grow and be healthy. They are essential for the overall state of the plant. 🌱
🌟 The primary macronutrients are Nitrogen 👎, Phosphorus (P), and Potassium (K).
N. Nitrogen
👉 Nitrogen is directly related to plant growth. It plays a key role in energy metabolism and protein synthesis.
P. Phosphorus
👉 Phosphorus stimulates root growth, although it is much more involved in the flowering stage. It is involved in transporting and storing energy and improves the plant’s general state, increasing the plant’s ability to withstand adverse climatological conditions.
K. Potassium
👉 Potassium is involved in the regulation of water and the transport of the plant’s reserve substances. It stimulates flowering and the synthesis of carbohydrates and enzymes. This, in turn, provides an increase in the plant’s ability to withstand unfavorable environments such as low temperatures, and prevents withering. Therefore, a lack of potassium reduces plant resilience to dry spells and frosts or to a fungus attack.
🌟 The secondary macronutrients are Calcium (Ca) Magnesium (Mg) and Sulfur (S).
Mg. Magnesium
👉 Magnesium constitutes the core of the chlorophyll molecule and is therefore essential for photosynthesis. This makes it an extremely important for plant development. Magnesium promotes the absorption and transportation of phosphorus. It helps with to the storage of sugars within the plant. Magnesium performs the function of an enzyme activator, and in fact activates more enzymes than any other nutrient.
S. Sulfur
👉 Sulfur participates in the formation of chlorophyll. It is fundamental in the metabolizing of nitrogen, since it improves nitrogen efficiency. Sulfur also improves plant defenses in general and helps in the growth of roots and seeds.
Ca. Calcium
👉 Calcium attaches to the walls of plant tissues, stabilizing the cell wall and favoring cell wall formation. Calcium is also involved in cell growth and development. It improves plant vigor, activating the formation of roots and their growth. Calcium contributes to mineral retention in the soil and to the transportation of such minerals. It neutralizes toxic substances in plants and contributes to seed formation.

The Woman Who Originated the , Present in All Nigerian Military Barracks 😍

This is the remarkable story of Mammy Maria Ochefu, the woman behind the famous "Mammy Market," a staple in every Nigerian military barrack.

Mammy Ochefu was the wife of Col. Anthony Ochefu. While living at the military barracks in Enugu, she started selling soft drinks and a locally brewed beverage called Kunu to keep busy and make a living. Her drinks became popular, drawing soldiers to her home.

However, complaints about the Kunu attracting flies led her to temporarily stop. This didn’t last long, as soldiers’ demand for her drinks prompted a colonel to set up a dedicated space behind the barracks for Mammy to continue her business in a more hygienic environment.

As her business flourished, other women in the barracks were inspired by her success and began selling various goods at the same location. This area became known as the Mammy Market.

As Mammy Ochefu and her husband were transferred to different states, she would always establish a Mammy Market in each new barracks. When leaving for the next state, she’d entrust the market to other women but made sure the name remained.

Today, Mammy Markets are present in all Nigerian military barracks, thanks to Mammy Ochefu’s entrepreneurial spirit. She now resides in Otukpo, Benue State, following the death of her husband.

How to Successfully Grow Maize 🌽🌾 Master the Art of Maize Cultivation! 🌾

Did you know that maize, Zea mays L., is the most abundantly produced cereal in the world? It's grown on every continent except Antarctica and is a staple for over 1.2 billion people in sub-Saharan Africa and Latin America. Let's dive into some key practices for a bountiful maize harvest.

1. Land Preparation:

🔹 Start with a well-prepared seedbed.
🔹 Loosen the soil for good seed-soil contact.
🔹 Control weeds and conserve moisture.

2. Choose the Right Seed Variety:

🔹 Select hybrids with high yield potential and good defensive traits.
🔹 SC719, SC649, and SC612 for medium to high rainfall areas.
🔹 SC651, SC510, and SC645 for low rainfall areas.

3. Achieve Optimum Population:

🔹 Use 20-25 kg of seed per hectare.
🔹 Aim for 50-60,000 plants per hectare in high potential areas.
🔹 37-44,000 plants per hectare in low rainfall areas.
🔹 Maintain spacing of 75cm between ridges and 25cm between plants.

4. Fertilizer Application:

🔹 Apply NPK as a basal application (6-8 bags per hectare).
🔹 Top-dress with Urea at 3 to 6 weeks after crop emergence.

5. Planting Time:

🔹 Plant with the first effective rains for a more vigorous root system.
🔹 Early planting extends the growing season.

6. Field Management:

🔹 Keep the field weed-free, especially during the first 10-12 weeks.
🔹 Scout for pests like the Fall Armyworm every 2-3 days.
🔹 Apply appropriate herbicides and pesticides early in the morning or late at night.

7. Harvesting Operations:

🔹 Harvest when the cobs are properly dried (30-35% moisture content).
🔹 Check by removing kernels; if they come off easily without cracking, it's time to harvest.

Why It Matters:

Maize accounts for 30-50% of low-income household expenditures in Africa and provides over 30% of caloric intake in sub-Saharan Africa. By following Good Agronomic Practices (GAPs), we can ensure higher yields and better food security for millions.

🌾 Let's grow together for a better tomorrow! 🌾
