Jealous lover kills girlfriend after argument over flirting with customer

A 50-year-old woman, Ajoke Esomojumi, who sold sachet alcohol on Ikorodu Road, Lagos, has been allegedly stabbed to death by her lover, one Victor Dadeowo, during a disagreement between the duo.

City Round learnt that the argument ensued between the lovebirds last Sunday evening while they were at her shop.

Esomojumi, and a customer were reportedly exchanging banter during which the latter jokingly smacked her buttocks– an act Dadeowo was said to have interpreted as romantic overtures.

It was gathered that he picked a quarrel with Esomojumi over the joke and complained bitterly until she closed the shop that night.

Our correspondent learnt that Dadeowo followed Esomojumi to her residence on Church Street, Ajegunle and resumed the argument which reportedly dragged to midnight when he allegedly stabbed her in the stomach.

A resident, who spoke to City Round on condition of anonymity, said neighbours warned the woman of imminent danger as the dispute intensified.

He said, “The woman was no longer married and lived alone. She and the man had been in a relationship for some time and he usually went to her shop. That Sunday, I learnt a customer while playing with her in his presence smacked her buttocks and he picked an offence.

He accused the woman of being unfaithful and they quarrelled over it. It was when they returned home that night and started quarrelling again that people knew the cause of their disagreement. When things were getting out of hand, neighbours advised her to be careful and that the man could kill her.

“It was around 2am (on Monday) that she screamed and some people rushed out to find out what the matter was. By the time they got to her apartment, she was in a pool of blood.”

A source confided in our correspondent that Esomujimi died afterwards and her son, who resides within the neighbourhood, was alerted to the incident.

EFCC releases VON DG detained over alleged fraud

THE Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has released the Director-General, Voice of Nigeria, Osita Okechukwu, who was detained over alleged fraud, The PUNCH has learnt.

This was as civil society organisation, Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria, called on the anti-graft agency to release Okechukwu or charge him to court.

The PUNCH had reported that Okechukwu was detained on January 29, 2022 over a case of conspiracy, abuse of office and misappropriation of public funds to the tune of N1.3bn.

He had visited the Abuja headquarters of the anti-graft agency to honour an invitation but he was subsequently detained.

However, when contacted on Saturday, EFCC spokesperson, Wilson Uwujaren, told our correspondent that Okechukwu had been released. “He was released on Monday,” Uwujaren said.

Earlier, HURIWA, in a statement had asked the EFCC to be law-abiding and civil by immediately releasing Okechukwu.

The group’s National Coordinator, Emmanuel Onwubiko, had said this in a statement titled, ‘HURIWA Asks EFCC to release Chief Osita Okechukwu or charge him to court immediately’.

The statement read in part, “Detaining Osita Okechukwu arbitrarily and indefinitely violates Constitutional provision in Section 34 which gives him right to respect to her human dignity.”

The group had called on the EFCC to “release Okechukwu or produce him in the competent court of law to prosecute him legally because Nigeria is not a Banana Republic”.

Aggrieved APC factions shift battle to court, accuse party of contempt

The internal crisis rocking the All Progressives Congress may not fizzle out any time soon as aggrieved factions of the party have shifted the battlefield to court after the national leadership of the party inaugurated state chairmen not in their camps.

Some factions also accused the APC of contempt of court with regard to pending legal matters and warned that the party was headed for an imminent collapse if it failed to resolve the crisis.

National secretary of the APC Caretaker and Extra-ordinary Convention Planning Committee, John Akpanudoedehe, had on Thursday sworn in 34 state chairmen in Abuja.

The chairmen are believed to have been produced from congresses monitored by the Independent National Electoral Commission and the APC Caretaker Committee led by the Yobe State Governor, Mai Mala Buni.

In the wake of the intense disagreements generated by the congresses, the party had set up a national reconciliation committee led by a former governor of Nasarawa State, Senator Abdullahi Adamu.

However, top sources within the party had told Saturday PUNCH that the panel failed to deliver its core mandate as none of the factions had reconciled in their respective states while the party’s national convention which will hold on February 26 draws near.

Reacting to the Thursday event in Abuja, the spokesperson for the Kabiru Marafa-led faction of the APC in Zamfara State, Alhaji Bello Maradun, said the inauguration of the Bello Mattawale faction of the party was a fruitless exercise that could worsen the crisis in the party.

Maradun said considering the dispute rocking the party in many states of the federation, the inauguration of the party’s state chairmen produced by “favoured factions may lead to the total collapse or disintegration of the party.”

Falconets will go for goals against Cameroon – Danjuma

Falconets head coach, Christopher Danjuma, says the team has no choice but to go out for goals when they face their Cameroonian counterpart in the 2022 U-20 Women’s World Cup in Costa Rica qualifiers at the refurbished MKO Abiola National Stadium, Abuja on Saturday (today).

Both sides played out a goalless draw in their first leg meeting on January 22 at the Stade Reunification in Douala.

Nigeria will need a win to see them through to the playoff round of the qualifiers where they’ll face the winner between Morocco and Senegal for a place in the finals billed for August 10 to 28 in Costa Rica.

Speaking ahead of the game, Danjuma says they will be hoping to get enough goals to see them through to the next qualifying round.

“We have no choice but to go all out for goals. The Cameroonian team is a strong one but we have worked hard since returning from the first leg in Douala and I believe my girls will get the job done,” Danjuma told TheNFF.com.

Saturday’s encounter will be the first international match at the MKO Abiola National Stadium since the venue hosted a 2016 Women Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match between the Super Falcons and the Senior Women Team of Senegal in April 2016.

The Confederation of African Football has appointed Togolese official Vincentia Amedome as the centre referee.

Amedome will be assisted by compatriot Abra Agbedanou (assistant referee 1); Ghanaian Doris Essuman Darko (assistant referee II) and yet another Togolese Edoh Kindedji (fourth official). The match commissioner is Aisha Nalule from Uganda while Ghanaian Emmanuella Grace Aglago will serve as referee assessor.

Eagles will make Nigerians smile again – Collins

Nigeria international, Jamilu Collins, says the Super Eagles will make up for the country’s early elimination from the ongoing 2021 Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon with victory over Ghana in the Qatar 2022 World Cup play-offs.

The Eagles and the Black Stars are scheduled to face off in March as both sides fight for a spot at the World Cup.

Despite their impressive start at the 33rd edition of the AFCON where they picked up maximum nine points in the group stage, Nigeria shockingly crashed out of the tournament in the Round of 16 following a 1-0 defeat to Tunisia on January 23.

The Austin Eguavoen-led side will have a chance to make up for the disappointment when they face eternal rivals Ghana over two legs in the World Cup qualifying play-offs.

Ghana, who have only made it to the Mundial on three different occasions – 2006, 2010, and 2014, also didn’t have a good outing in Cameroon as they failed to progress from their group having finished bottom of the group with just a point.

The four-time African champions responded to their abysmal performance with the sacking of their coach, Milovan Rajevac.

While expressing his unhappiness at the country’s early exit from the AFCON, Collins said the Eagles are looking forward to putting smiles back on the faces of Nigerians with a World Cup qualification berth.

Honestly, it was so sad the way we crashed out of the 2021 AFCON in Cameroon,” the Paderborn fullback told CKD Media.

Eguavoen AFCON call best Xmas gift I received – Olayinka

SLAVIA PRAGUE striker Peter Olayinka has stated that his call-up by interim Super Eagles coach, Austin Eguavoen, to the national team for the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations was the best Christmas gift he has ever received, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

Olayinka was a late inclusion in the Eagles squad after the trio Odion Ighalo, Victor Osimhen and Emmanuel Dennis pulled out of the squad with barely 10 days to the kickoff of the tournament.

Aside, the 26-year-old, Henry Onyekuru, Kelechi Nwakali and Olisa Ndah were the other late inclusion in the team to the championship.

The former Genk striker told PUNCH Sports Extra that he had booked a 10-day holiday trip to Mallorca, Spain before he received a call from the interim coach Eguavoen if he would like to be part of the squad for the AFCON.

“I could say the coach’s (Eguavoen’s) call was the best Christmas gift I received in December,” Olayinka began in an exclusive interview with the PUNCH newspaper.

“Despite my happiness, the call disrupted my holiday plans because first I had to cancel my trip and inform my club President that I have been invited to the Nigerian national team for the AFCON.”

He also revealed that his club tried to convince him from honouring the invitation but he vehemently rejected all the pleas.

Fans hail ‘world-class’ Tessema as best AFCON referee

FANS have praised referee Bamlak Tessema Weyesa for his officiating during Senegal’s semi-final win over Burkina Faso at the Africa Cup of Nations.

The Ethiopian overturned two penalty decisions to Senegal after VAR reviews in a dramatic first half.

Firstly, Burkina Faso goalkeeper Herve Koffi collided with Senegal midfielder Cheikhou Kouyate in the box.

But the shotstopper appeared to get to the ball with a punch and Tessema ruled no penalty after reviewing the collision on the pitchside monitor.

Ten seconds before the break, Edmond Tapsoba was booked for handball and the referee pointed to the spot.

However, after another review Tessema overturned the booking and the penalty decision.

Footballing fans took to Twitter to hail his officiating, praising his decision to overturn the penalty calls.

One posted, “The referee in the Burkina Faso Senegal game is having such a good game. Has got right all the key decisions and is clearly in charge. Refreshing to see at AFCON.’

“I’ve seen this referee doing a couple of games at the AFCON semi-final tonight,’ wrote another.

“I like his style; totally officious, quick to reach for his cards and blow for a penalty, and just as quick to change his mind once he sees the VAR.

‘Likes a high waistband too. Top reffing.’

‘Fantastic refereeing the referee to cancel the yellow card and Penalty which had been given for Senegal,’ said another fan.

The tournament had been labelled an ‘absolute joke’ because referees were ‘spoiling’ the tournament with red cards.

AFCON has produced 13 sending offs so far, as many as the last four tournaments combined and fans have been left furious.

Liverpool still interested in Carvalho -Klopp

Jurgen Klopp says Liverpool’s strategy is always to build “a team for now and tomorrow”, revealing the club are still interested in Fulham teenager Fabio Carvalho after signing Porto forward Luis Diaz.

Liverpool signed Diaz, 25, for an initial fee of £37.5 million ($51 million) on Sunday but ran out of time to complete a deadline-day deal for Carvalho.

Klopp said the club would be “crazy” not to retain an interest in the highly rated teenager, who is out of contract at the Championship leaders at end of the season.

“Our strategy is to sign the right players at the right moment,” the Liverpool boss said on Friday. “We recognise issues like a position or contracts.

“We are long together with this team, it’s a fantastic team, one of the most successful in the history of this club but we will never miss having a look ahead and that’s exactly what we are doing.

“We are Liverpool so we cannot only work with talents and say: ‘Let’s have a look in two or three years and they will be ready’. There must always be a mix-up.”

While Carvalho is viewed as a player for the future, his performances for Fulham — with seven goals and four assists in 18 league matches — have attracted attention from a host of clubs.

“We are obviously still interested,” said Klopp. “It would be crazy if we were not, but it is just at the moment not in our hands.

“It was late before the transfer window closed and it didn’t work out but we will see what happens.”
