My neighbor of 10 years knocked on my door at exactly 11:30 PM holding a black leather bag. His eyes were red, and his hands were shaking. I let him in. That single decision cost me my entire life savings and almost sent me to Kirikiri prison.
We had lived on the same street in Surulere for a decade. Our children attended the same school, and his wife used to cook for my family when I was sick. He was not just a neighbor; he was a brother. That night, he collapsed on my sofa, crying. He said some ruthless "loan sharks" were after him because of a failed business deal. He begged me to keep a small bag in my parlor just for two days until he could sort out his debts. He promised to pay me ₦50,000 for the favor. Because of the trust we shared, I didn't even open the bag. I hid it deep inside my wardrobe, under my sweater clothes.
For two days, everything was normal. On the third morning, at exactly 5:00 AM, my gate was nearly pulled down. Three unmarked vans blocked my street. Men in tactical gear stormed my compound, shouting and breaking down my door. They searched everywhere. When they found the bag, they opened it in front of me. My heart stopped. It was filled with millions of naira in freshly minted counterfeit currency.
My neighbor’s apartment was empty. He had vanished into thin air with his family. I was dragged to the station, labeled a kingpin in a counterfeiting ring. I spent three agonizing weeks in a cold cell, sharing a toilet with hardened criminals, while my lawyer fought to prove I was just a foolishly trusting neighbor. I lost my job, my reputation, and my blood pressure skyrocketed.
