On this day, Saturday August 15, 1970, police officers who served Biafra during the war, were dismissed from the Nigeria Police through Decree 46.
At the end of the war in January 1970, the government of Yakubu Gowon enacted the decree. The main aim of the decree was to reabsorb Biafra into Nigeria and strengthen the authority of the Nigerian government. However, it affected all those who served in the Bïafran police at the time of the conflict.
But in May 2000, President Olusegun Obasanjo, a former military leader played a significant role in the post-war reconciliation process, granted amnesty to the dismissed Biafran police officers as part of his effort at further uniting the country.
With the amnesty, the former Bïafran police officers were reinstated and received compensation and other benefits from the government.
