ABUJA, Nigeria Peter Nwanchukwu Faces Death Penalty For Killing Wife, Osinachi The Gospel Singer.

Justice Njideka Nwosu-Iheme of the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, Wuse Zone 2, has sentenced Peter Nwachukwu, husband of late gospel singer Osinachi Nwachukwu, to death by hanging after finding him guilty of culpable homicide.
The court affirmed that Nwachukwu’s actions directly resulted in his wife’s death on April 8, 2022.
The Federal Government arraigned Nwachukwu on June 3, 2022, on a 23-count charge that included culpable homicide punishable by death, criminal intimidation, spousal battery, cruelty to children, and related offences.
During the trial, the prosecution called 17 witnesses, including two children of the deceased who testified as PW4 and PW5.

The prosecution also tendered 25 exhibits before the court. In his defence, Nwachukwu personally testified and called four witnesses, submitting four exhibits to support his case.

Ahead of sentencing, Nwachukwu’s counsel, Reginald Nwali, pleaded for leniency.

However, prosecuting counsel, Mrs Aderonke Imala, urged the court to apply the full weight of the law given the severity of the crime.

Justice Nwosu-Iheme, after reviewing the evidence and arguments, sentenced Nwachukwu to death by hanging on Count 1 (culpable homicide).

On other counts, including criminal intimidation and spousal battery, he received two years’ imprisonment each on Counts 2, 3, 8, 9, 12, 13, and 18, and six years’ imprisonment on Count 10.

Nationwide Blackout As National Grid Collapses Again

The national grid experienced another collapse today, Monday, October 14, 2024, marking the sixth time Nigerians have been plugged into total darkness.

According to data obtained from the Nigerian System Operator’s portal (niggrid.org), between 7:00 pm and the time of filing this report, the grid recorded an unprecedented zero Megawatts (MW).

Data gleaned showed that all 22 generation companies (GenCos) are down as of the time of this report.

The Enugu Electricity Distribution Company confirmed the grid collapse in a statement on Monday evening.

The EEDC informed its customers “of a general system collapse that occurred at 18:48 hours today, 14th October 2024,” saying this has resulted in the loss of supply currently being experienced across the EEDC network.

“Consequently, due to this development, all our interface TCN stations are out of supply, and we are unable to provide services to our customers in Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu, and Imo States.

“We are on standby awaiting detailed information of the collapse and restoration of supply from the National Control Centre (NCC), Osogbo,” the EEDC stated in the statement signed by the Head of Corporate Communications, Emeka Ezeh.

The Abuja Disco also said, “Dear Valued Customer, Please be informed that the power outage being experienced is due to a system failure from the national grid at 6:58 pm today, affecting the power supply to our franchise areas.

“Rest assured, we are working with the relevant stakeholders to restore power as soon as the grid is stabilized. Thank you for your understanding.”

This collapse marks the sixth grid disturbance in 2024, adding to challenges that have long plagued Nigeria’s power sector.

Despite the widespread impact of the blackout, the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) had not stated to confirm the occurrence, leaving the public and stakeholders in the dark about the source and resolution of the newest crisis.

Recall that on February 4, 2024, Nigeria recorded its first blackout in 2024 as the national power grid collapsed at around 11:51 AM, as the TCN-operated grid went down. As a result, the system’s capacity dropped from 2,407 megawatts to just 31MW by midday and to zero by 1 PM.

On August 5, the country recorded its fifth blackout of the year.

There Is No Politics Without Opposition _ Hon. Lanre Ogunnoiki Abdulrasaq

By Adaeze Success

As the people of Ojodu LCDA, warm up for the next grassroot elections, Sail News had the privilege to have a media chat with Hon. Lanre Ogunnoiki Abdulrasaq a Councilor aspirant in Ward D. Enjoy the excerpt.

Q~This is not the first or second time you have come out to contest for a Councilor position in Ward D but end up stepping down for someone. Why?

A~ As a party faithful I obey the leadership of the party, if the leadership says this is where we are heading I have to follow, all for the good of the party. This time they all know and agree that it's the right time for me.

Q~ If the leadership knows it's your time why are you not unopposed?

A~ It is the right of anyone who wants to contest to do so. Moreover, it won't be politics if there is no opposition. Your capacity need to be tested. Your antecedent, popularity, goodwill and character will speak for you. My people know me.

Q~ What is your position on the attack on your personality from your opponent camp?

A~ I do not believe that politics should be violent, hence, I told my people not to be violent or get distracted by accusations and propaganda. I advise them to sell their product well. Tell people what you know about your candidate and how he can deliver.

Q~ What is your plan for Ward D?

A~ You know a Councilor does not have much power to execute projects in the community; like building roads etc. But I will facilitate the dividend of democracy from the local government and state government to come to Ward D, through the help of Almighty God.
