Cape Town-based MEST Africa, backed by Absa, just opened applications for the MEST Africa Challenge 2025—a pan‑African pitch competition focused on fintech and high-value value‑chain startups. Early-stage startups (less than 3 years old, operating in at least one Absa market with at least US $5K MRR) compete for a shot at US $50,000 equity, entry into MEST’s portfolio, and the chance to pilot solutions with Absa business units. Applications are open from August 4 to September 26, 2025, with virtual semi‑finals in October and a live grand finale in Cape Town in November. This is a rare chance for African fintech founders to scale their impact and gain global exposure.

After launching in Brampton, Ontario, the Nigerian mobility startup is now serving corporate clients in Canada with a full-stack travel solution—flights, hotels, cars, the whole package.

Their journey started with a $5K laptop hustle in 2019, and now they’ve served 6 million users across 25 cities in 5 countries. Oh, and they're powering travel logistics for the University of Toronto’s African Impact Challenge. No big deal.

Cape Town-based VC firm HAVAÍC has raised $25M out of a targeted $50M for its African Innovation Fund 3, with Sanlam Multi-Manager coming in as a major investor—marking Sanlam’s first serious entry into South Africa’s venture capital space. The fund focuses on early-stage African tech startups with cross-border potential in fintech, agritech, and digital infrastructure.

HAVAÍC has already deployed capital into startups like SAPay, Sportable, NjiaPay, and SwiftVEE. The firm recently celebrated two major exits: RapidDeploy was acquired by Motorola Solutions in one of SA’s biggest tech acquisitions, while hearX Group merged with US-listed Eargo in a $100M deal.
