The Price of a Dream
When Chinedu was only six years old, he lost both of his parents in a tragic accident. Overnight, the cheerful boy became an orphan. Instead of finding love and comfort, he was forced to live with an uncle who saw him as a burden rather than family.
Every morning before school, Chinedu fetched water, worked on the farm, and sold fruits by the roadside. Sometimes he arrived at school late, hungry, and exhausted. Many of his classmates laughed at his worn-out uniform and torn sandals, but he never gave up. He believed education was the only key that could unlock a better future.
After finishing primary school with excellent results, there was no one to pay his secondary school fees. Chinedu worked as a cleaner, carried loads in the market, and tutored younger children after school. He studied at night under the light of a street lamp because there was no electricity where he lived.
Years of pain and determination finally paid off. He gained admission to the university through a scholarship. Life remained difficult, but he refused to quit. During holidays, he worked as a laborer to buy books and feed himself. Every obstacle only made him stronger.
On graduation day, tears filled his eyes as he wore his academic gown. He remembered every insult, every sleepless night, and every painful sacrifice. He silently thanked his late parents, believing they would have been proud of him.
After graduation, Chinedu completed his NYSC with dedication and excellence. He dreamed of getting a good job, building a house, and helping other orphans live the life he never had.
But fate took a heartbreaking turn.
One evening, while returning home after an interview, he visited his village to see his uncle. Unknown to Chinedu, the uncle had become consumed by greed after hearing that a company was about to employ him and that compensation from his late parents' property might finally be released.
Instead of celebrating his nephew's success, the uncle chose jealousy over love. In a cruel act, he arranged for Chinedu to be attacked. The young man who had survived poverty, hunger, rejection, and years of suffering never returned home alive.
The village was filled with grief. People could not understand why someone who had struggled honestly from childhood to adulthood had his life cut short just as hope was beginning to shine.
At his funeral, an elderly teacher stood before the mourners and said, "They took Chinedu's life, but they could not destroy his courage. His story will remind us that success built on perseverance is powerful, and that greed can destroy even the closest families."
Although Chinedu did not live to enjoy the future he worked so hard for, his life became an inspiration to countless young people. His name was remembered not because of how he died, but because he refused to surrender to hardship until his very last day.
