Good evening everyone
Let’s talk about one of the most common lies told to students every admission season
It says... Just accept the course… you can switch in 200 level
Sounds innocent, right?
But that statement has trapped more destinies than broken calculators in Nigerian universities
At first, it sounds like a smart plan
You wanted Medicine, but they gave you Anatomy
You wanted Law, but they gave you Political Science
You wanted Computer Engineering, but they gave you Physics
Then someone maybe a friend, an uncle, or even an admission officer whispers......
Just accept it… you will switch later
My dear, Chidimma is telling you now that the later rarely comes
SWITCHING IS NOT AS EASY AS THEY MAKE IT SOUND
You will hear You can switch at 200 level like it’s just a form you fill and boom new department.
Reality check.... switching is a whole process
You need approval from HODs, Deans, and sometimes the university senate itself
And guess what? Everyone will tell you No slot available.
It’s not about your GPA alone sometimes, it’s about politics, space, and timing
You accept the course thinking, It’s just for one year
But one year becomes two… then four… then graduation
By the time you realize it, you have finished a degree you never liked in the first place
You will be carrying a certificate that represents someone else’s dream, not yours
And that’s how many people end up stuck in jobs they don’t love, living with quiet frustration
They will tell you, Just get 4.5 CGPA and you will be allowed to switch.
Easier said than done
Because once you enter a department you don’t like, motivation dies
The lectures drain you
The workload hits harder
Before you know it, that 4.5 dream drops to 3.2… then 2.9… and boom your switch plan evaporates
Let’s face it..... You know Chidimma no dey like hide truth
many Nigerian universities don’t permit inter-departmental transfer at all
They will keep promising you during registration, but when it’s time, you will hear Sorry, that policy has changed
Or
We are not taking new students into that department this session.
Your course shapes your career, your opportunities, your network, and your mindset
So don’t just pick anything because school na school
If you hàte the course you are studying, even graduating will feel like pun!shment
Education should not feel like a pr!son sentence.
You can rewrite jamb and get what you want
This is the part people don’t say loud enough
It’s better to wait one more year and study what you love than to rush into what will frustrate you for four years
Rewriting JAMB is not a fa!lure.
It’s maturity
You are simply choosing a better path for your future
Because let’s be honest, what’s four years of stress compared to a lifetime of regret?
Some people never switch, they just adjust
You will see them later saying they actually love this course now
But deep down, they are just making peace with their situation
They didn’t switch they just gave up f!ghting
Don’t fa!! for that trap
If you truly have passion for a course, fight for it early, not after you have wasted years.
Before you accept any admission, ask yourself if you are willing to study this course for four years if switching doesn’t work out
Will you still be proud of this degree after graduation?
If your answer is No, then don’t let anyone deceive you with you can switch in 200 level.
Because truth be told.....8 out of 10 students who planned to switch, never did
They just adjusted, endured, and graduated confused.
