Episode 20: The First Step Forward
The meeting with Evelyn changed something inside Blessing.
For days, she could not stop thinking about their conversation.
The more she reflected on it, the more she realized how similar their stories were.
Different women.
Different personalities.
Same house.
Same pain.
Same ending.
For the first time, Blessing stopped asking herself whether she was the problem.
Instead, she began asking a different question.
Why did she blame herself for surviving?
---
The following morning, Blessing woke up earlier than usual.
She opened the window and allowed fresh air into the apartment.
The rising sun painted the sky with beautiful colors.
For months, she had forgotten how beautiful mornings could be.
Back at Francis's house, every morning began with fear.
Now there was silence.
Peace.
Freedom.
She smiled faintly.
It was small.
But it was real.
---
After breakfast, Stella arrived with exciting news.
The moment she entered, she was smiling.
Blessing immediately became curious.
"What happened?"
Stella sat down and handed her a folded paper.
"Read it."
Blessing opened it slowly.
As her eyes moved across the page, confusion turned into surprise.
It was an invitation.
A teaching interview.
---
Blessing looked up immediately.
"What is this?"
Stella grinned.
"A friend of mine works in a private academy across town. They need experienced teachers."
Blessing's eyes widened.
"An interview?"
"Yes."
Blessing stared at the paper for several seconds.
Her heart suddenly became heavy.
Not from fear this time.
From doubt.
---
"What if they don't hire me?"
Stella sighed.
"There is only one way to find out."
Blessing looked down quietly.
Months of emotional abuse had damaged her confidence badly.
The woman who once stood proudly before classrooms now questioned everything about herself.
Even her own abilities.
---
"You are a good teacher," Stella said firmly.
Blessing forced a weak smile.
"I used to be."
"No," Stella corrected. "You still are."
Those words settled warmly inside her heart.
---
The interview was scheduled for the following day.
That night, Blessing carefully ironed her best dress.
It was one of the few clothes she managed to bring when she escaped.
As she prepared for bed, she stared at herself in the mirror again.
The woman looking back still looked wounded.
But she also looked stronger than before.
---
The next morning, Blessing arrived at the academy feeling nervous.
The school was larger than her previous workplace.
Children played happily around the compound.
Teachers moved from one building to another carrying lesson notes.
For a moment, she simply stood there watching.
She had missed this environment.
She had missed teaching.
---
Inside the interview room, three administrators sat behind a desk.
Blessing greeted them politely and took her seat.
The questions started immediately.
Questions about classroom management.
Teaching methods.
Child development.
Lesson planning.
At first, she felt nervous.
But as the conversation continued, something wonderful happened.
The teacher inside her returned.
---
Her answers became confident.
Her voice became stronger.
Her experience spoke for itself.
Soon, she forgot about fear completely.
For nearly an hour, she answered questions and discussed educational strategies passionately.
When the interview finally ended, one of the administrators smiled.
"You clearly love teaching."
Blessing smiled genuinely.
"Yes. I do."
---
As she left the school compound, she felt something she had not experienced in a long time.
Pride.
Not pride connected to marriage.
Not pride connected to society's approval.
Pride in herself.
---
Later that afternoon, she returned home and found her mother waiting for her.
The older woman stood up immediately.
"How did it go?"
Blessing smiled softly.
"I think it went well."
Her mother hugged her tightly.
The warmth of that embrace nearly made Blessing cry.
For years, she had sought validation from everyone else.
Now she was finally receiving support from the people who truly mattered.
---
That evening, her phone rang.
An unknown number.
Blessing hesitated briefly before answering.
"Hello?"
A familiar voice responded.
"Good evening, Miss Blessing."
Her heart skipped.
It was one of the administrators.
"We would like to offer you the position."
For a moment, Blessing could not speak.
Tears filled her eyes immediately.
"Really?"
"Yes. We were impressed by your experience."
Blessing covered her mouth as tears rolled down her cheeks.
After ending the call, she simply sat there crying.
But these were different tears.
Not tears of pain.
Not tears of fear.
These were tears of hope.
---
When Stella returned later that evening, Blessing rushed toward her excitedly.
"I got the job!"
Stella screamed happily and pulled her into a hug.
The two women laughed and cried together.
For the first time since leaving Francis's house, the future looked brighter.
---
Meanwhile, across town, Francis sat alone in his workshop.
Business had become slower.
His relationship with neighbors had become strained.
Even some family members had started avoiding conversations about Blessing.
The gossip refused to die.
---
That evening, one of his sisters approached him cautiously.
"Have you heard?"
Francis looked up.
"Heard what?"
She hesitated briefly.
Then she answered.
"Blessing got another teaching job."
Francis froze
