*Gunmen Abduct Ex-Minister Bayo Adelabu’s Younger Sister and Twin Sons in Ibadan Amid Fresh Wave of Kidnappings in Oyo*

Gunmen have abducted Mrs. Olaide Busayo Adegoke John-Paul, the 43-year-old younger sister of former Minister of Power and APC 2027 governorship aspirant Chief Adebayo Adelabu, alongside her 12-year-old twin sons, Peter and Paul, in Ibadan, Oyo State. 951a

The incident occurred at about 7:30 a.m. on Wednesday, June 3, 2026, in the Elewura area of Challenge, Ibadan South West LGA, while Mrs. John-Paul was on her way to drop her children at school. Eyewitnesses said the attackers fired sporadically to scare residents, forced her out of her Kia Sonata, and drove her and the twins away in another vehicle brought by the kidnappers. A video circulating online showed a red Toyota Camry abandoned on the street with doors ajar, suggesting a sudden attack.

Adelabu’s media aide, Femi Awogboro, confirmed the abduction in an official statement, describing it as “unfortunate” and deeply distressing to the family. The statement said Mrs. John-Paul is the youngest of five children of Mrs. Olufunmilayo Aduke Adegoke Adelabu, and had recently retired from service at the Central Bank of Nigeria and First Bank Pension Custodian before relocating to Ibadan with her children. She was making arrangements to join her husband, Mr. John Paul, who had earlier moved to the U.S.

Security agencies were immediately notified, and the family said preliminary investigations had commenced to secure the safe rescue of the victims and apprehend those responsible. The family appealed to the public to avoid spreading unverified information that could undermine ongoing operations. The Oyo State Police Command said it could not yet independently verify the incident.

The abduction comes amid a fresh spate of kidnappings in Oyo. On May 15, 2026, over 40 teachers and students were kidnapped during an attack at Ahoro-Esiele in Oriire LGA. In December 2025, APC chieftain Wale Oriade was also abducted in Ibadan by armed men who arrived in a blue Micra. The latest incident has heightened concerns over worsening insecurity in the states.

The abduction of retired Major General Rabe Abubakar, former Director of Defence Information, and his wife has taken a new turn. The bandit leader, Kachalla Muhammadu, has contacted the family demanding a "prisoner swap" the release of his men in security custody in exchange for the general and his wife. During the conversation, the family was allowed to speak with the general, who confirmed he and his wife are healthy and in good condition.

The Defence Headquarters has deployed intelligence assets and intensified search-and-rescue operations. The Katsina State Commissioner of Police has visited the scene and ordered the deployment of additional personnel. This morning, we report on a nation where even a retired general's safety is not guaranteed and a military working around the clock to bring him home.

*Buratai Challenges Security Agencies: “If You Can Trace Cybercriminals, You Can Locate Bandits Who Flaunt Ransom Online”*

Former Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai (Rtd), has questioned why Nigerian security agencies struggle to locate bandits while they can quickly track ordinary citizens and social media influencers.

Speaking during an appearance on TVC, Buratai addressed public anger over the impunity of criminal gangs who openly flaunt ransom money and victims’ families’ payments on social media. He rejected the idea that these groups are untraceable, arguing that the same intelligence and tracking capabilities used to apprehend civil offenders should be applied to bandits.

When asked about the constant frustration Nigerians feel over bandits posting their loot online while security agencies show “lack of capacity to trace them in their hideouts,” Buratai responded:

> “I don’t think they fail to locate. If they can locate ordinary citizens or social media influencers, I don’t believe they cannot locate these bandits that flaunt their loots or their activities”.

The ex-army chief called for capacity building across all security agencies, saying bandits have devised new methods to carry out attacks and have become emboldened in showing off proceeds of crime.

Buratai’s comments come amid ongoing debates about tracking criminals in Nigeria. Presidential aide Daniel Bwala recently noted that reliance on foreign internet services like Starlink makes it harder for security agencies to trace bandits, since local IP addresses and phone numbers are easier to monitor than foreign-based networks.

During his tenure and since retirement, Buratai has consistently emphasized intelligence gathering and community support. He has urged Nigerians to disclose the identities of criminals living among them, stressing that “the bandits and other criminals are not spirits. They live among people”. He also argued that the military alone cannot end insurgency and that action must be taken against terrorism financiers, whose identities are known to government agencies.

The statement has reignited discussion on whether technology, surveillance, and intelligence gaps – rather than inability – are responsible for the continued operations of bandit groups who publicly publicize their crimes.
