Mr Bola Tinubu has asked delegates of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Oyo State to end the lingering crisis or lose the 2023 general elections to the opposition.

The APC chieftain issued the warning on Thursday while addressing delegates in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, four days to the commencement of the ruling party’s national convention where he is one of the frontline presidential aspirants.
Tinubu and his supporters, who were in Pacesetter State to woo APC delegates ahead of the party’s presidential primary election, said he was aware that there are some aggrieved members of the party.

“I want to tell you this; those of you having bickering amongst you must all come together and ensure it all ends. Let the crisis end immediately or you all lose the election,” he said.

“Let it all end. I shall return to Oyo State because there’s no time for extensive discussion today. The crisis between the two factions must be sorted out.”

The ex-Lagos governor also urged the APC and one of its gubernatorial candidates, Teslim Folarin to make peace and beg the aggrieved members before the general elections in 2023.

He added, “Do you want governor? You should all speak up one more time. We have heard and accepted your choice, may God answer our prayers.

“I came here to advertise myself and the candidates; Folarin’s election is still ahead so I shall return to raise his hand.

“However before I return, Folarin must work seriously to mend the entire broken fence. He must seek out elders to help him implore those who contested the ticket with him so all factions could be brought together as one family.

“The party is divided into two; he must work to unite all aggrieved. We shall support him if he could be humble, pray and beg all concerned.”

Manchester United on Thursday revealed that Juan Mata will depart the club when his contract expires in the summer.

The 34-year-old midfielder joined the Reds in January 2014 and went on to play 285 games, scoring 51 goals and winning four trophies.

Mata, a World Cup and European Championship winner in 2010 and 2012 respectively, had already won the Champions League, FA Cup and Europa League – all with Chelsea – when he penned a contract with the Reds in 2014.

The statement on Manchester United’s website read “Thank you for dedicating eight years of your career to United, Juan. Everyone at the club wishes you all the best for the future.”

“He remained a highly regarded member of the squad. His teammates and members of staff never tired of praising his professional attitude and positivity.”

The Spanish also said his goodbyes to the United faithful on Twitter

“I wanted to say thank you very much for the years and especially the difficult times that we lived together,” Mata said.

“I will never forget you, Thank you very much. All the best.”
Mata made more than 30 appearances in each of the 2017/18, 2018/19 and 2019/20 seasons and although his tallies dropped below 20 in the last two terms.

He made his final appearance in the last fixture of the 2021/22 season, away to Crystal Palace on 22 May.

Lionel Messi stole the show as Copa America holders Argentina powered to a 3-0 win against European champions Italy in the Finalissima at Wembley on Wednesday.

Inspired by the peerless Messi, Argentina raced into a two-goal lead in the first half of the prestigious friendly thanks to strikes from Lautaro Martinez and Angel Di Maria.

Paulo Dybala capped Argentina’s rout, but after a disappointing season with Paris Saint-Germain by his sky-high standards, it was the sight of Messi back to his imperious best that took the spotlight.

The 34-year-old’s eye-catching display featured two assists and was worthy of his rare appearance at one of football’s great cathedrals.

It was another memorable moment for Argentina, who have qualified for this year’s World Cup as they extend the golden afterglow from the victory over Brazil that ended their 28-year wait to win the Copa America in 2021.

Argentina were already established as one of the leading contenders to win the World Cup and defeating Italy was another statement of intent from La Albiceleste, who are now unbeaten in 32 matches.

If Messi can play at this level in Qatar, Lionel Scaloni’s side will be a force to be reckoned with as they chase a first World Cup title since 1986.
For Italy, it was a disappointing return to Wembley 11 months after they beat England on penalties in the Euro 2020 final.

Roberto Mancini’s team have gone into a steep decline since that memorable triumph.

They failed to qualify for the World Cup after suffering a humiliating loss to North Macedonia in their play-off semi-final.

Mancini admitted the Finalissima represented the “end of a cycle” for his European champions.

After the World Cup failure, Mancini is transitioning to a younger generation, with the forthcoming Nations League matches against Germany, England, and Hungary his real focus.

Mancini’s overhaul effectively started at half-time when Italy said farewell to 117-cap skipper Giorgio Chiellini, who was substituted in his final game before international retirement.
This was only the third Finalissima contest between the respective champions of Europe and South America and the first since Diego Maradona’s Argentina beat De

As the war between Russia and Ukraine rages, President Muhammadu Buhari has called for global cooperation to avert a looming food crisis.

He made the call on Wednesday in Madrid, Spain at the Royal Palace during an audience with his Royal Majesty King Felipe VI in continuation of his visit to the country.

“The two leaders canvassed a global action to stem the food problem, especially in wheat production occasioned by the ongoing war in Ukraine, urging world leaders to take concrete actions to avert the crisis,” a statement by presidential spokesman Femi Adesina said.
In a separate meeting with President Pedro Sanchez, President Buhari said Nigeria looked forward to increasing bilateral relations between both nations.

This is even as he commended his Spanish counterpart for his leadership qualities and contributions in the war against terror in Sub-Saharan Africa, especially in Mali, and looked forward to cooperation in the area.

The two leaders discussed areas of cooperation in which Agreements and Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) were signed.

In his remarks, President Sanchez stressed that as a major partner of Spain in Africa, Nigeria was a country that his people really wanted to have a stronger partnership with going forward.

He hailed President Buhari for his leadership roles in Africa, especially in the area of strengthening democratic ideals. Currently, Spain is the largest importer of Nigerian gas and the third-largest importer of Nigerian crude, and with the visit, the two leaders hoped for bigger trade relations.

At the end of the visit, nine Agreements and Memoranda of Understanding were signed, namely: Treaty on Mutual Legal Assistance in Criminal Matters; Transfer of Sentenced Persons; Extradition; Economic and Commercial Cooperation; Tourism. Others were on Sports; Health; the Fight Against COVID-19; and Science and Innovation.

The Nigerian Army has dismissed claims that some Nigerian villages were attacked by Ambazonia militants, a separatist group in Cameroon.

Although the military authorities confirmed that the militants stormed some communities on Sunday, it said the attack did not happen on Nigerian territory.

In a statement dated May 30, 2022, the Director of Army Public Relations, Brig-Gen Onyema Nwachukwu, noted that four victims who ran into the Nigerian territory were rescued.
“The Nigerian Army has been notified of a statement insinuating that Nigerian villages were attacked by Cameroonian separatists on May 29, 2022,” the statement read in part.

“Contrary to the misinformation, our troops deployed at Danare received information on Sunday morning about the said attack. The troops immediately mobilised to the Bashu community, which was allegedly under attack.

“Upon their arrival, it was revealed that Bashu was not under attack and no external incursion was recorded; rather the separatists attacked Obonyi 2 and Njasha, both of which are communities located in the Republic of Cameroon.

“Four victims of the attack, who crossed over into the Nigerian territory were later rescued by troops and operatives of Nigerian Immigration Services. The attack was, therefore, not within the Nigerian territory as claimed.”

Tottenham Hotspur have signed Croatia international Ivan Perisic on a free transfer, the Premier League club announced Tuesday.

The 33-year-old will join the north London side when his contract at Inter Milan expires at the end of June after agreeing to a two-year deal.

“We are delighted to announce the transfer of Ivan Perisic,” said a Spurs statement.

“The vastly experienced Croatia international will join the club on 1 July following the expiration of his contract at Internazionale and has agreed on a deal that will run until 2024.”

Perisic worked with Tottenham manager Antonio Conte in Italy, with the duo winning the 2020/21 Serie A title together at Inter.

But he has turned down a new contract to stay at the San Siro in order to move to England.

Perisic has also won league titles in Germany — with Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich — while also scoring in a World Cup final for Croatia.

A versatile player, Perisic can be deployed as a left wing-back, winger, second striker or attacking midfielder.

His arrival marks a change from Tottenham’s usual transfer policy of signing younger players with a sell-on value and is a sign of their growing confidence in Conte.

Perisic bid farewell to Inter fans with an Instagram message that acknowledged his time wearing this “glorious jersey” had come to an end.

He added: “It was an unforgettable learning experience for me as a player and for my whole family

“To the team, the staff, to all the employees but most importantly to the fans: you will always have a special place in my heart.”

Tottenham finished fourth in the recently concluded Premier League season to qualify for next term’s elite European Champions League.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has lamented the high number of uncollected Permanent Voters Card (PVCs), putting the figure at about 20 million.

INEC National Commissioner of FCT, Nasarawa, Kaduna and Plateau States, Mohammed Haruna, disclosed this on Tuesday at the launch of a campaign to drive the collection of PVCs and increase participation in the ongoing continuous voter registration exercise.

He stated that statistics by INEC in 2019 showed that over 84 million PVCs were printed.

Of the figure, the INEC Commissioner explained that over 72 million were collected while over 11 million voter cards were left uncollected.

Giving a breakdown of the figure, the South-West had the highest number of uncollected PVCs with over 3.4 million, followed by the North-West with over 1.9 million then the South-South with over 1.7 million.

While the North-Central had about 1.5 million uncollected cards, the South-East recorded over 1.4 million, the North-East had over 800,000 and the FCT had about 318,000 uncollected voter’s cards.

“Ahead of the 2019 general elections, there were 84 million PVCs. I think close to 20 million (PVCs have not been collected),” he said.

“It may be a small percentage but in terms of absolute number, that’s huge. 20 million is probably more than the voters of so many West African countries put together.”

To change the narrative, Nessaction, a civil society organisation is launching a Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) and the PVC collection campaign in collaboration with INEC, United Nations Development Programme and YIAGA Africa to drive collection in the FCT and Nasarawa State.

In April, INEC announced a total of over 1.8 million newly PVCs, comprising over 1.3 million cards of genuine, new registrants and 464,340 PVCs for verified applicants for transfer or replacement of cards were ready for collection.

A presidential aspirant, Bola Tinubu, on Monday appeared before the screening committee of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to defend why he seeks to succeed President Muhammadu Buhari in 2023.

The exercise was conducted by the committee led by a former Edo State governor and former APC national chairman, John Oyegun, at Transcorp Hilton Hotel in Abuja.

Some of the questions asked the APC chieftain bordered on his upbringing, as well as educational and professional background, the Director of Media and Communication of the Tinubu Campaign Organisation, Bayo Onanuga, said in a statement.
“He (Tinubu) confidently told the panel why he is qualified to fly the flag of APC as its presidential candidate,” Onanuga stated. “He cited his success as governor of Lagos State, raising the internal revenue generation of the state from a paltry N600 million monthly, which has now grown to N51 billion today.”

According to Tinubu’s aide, the presidential aspirant also cited his invitation to Enron to begin the first state-backed power generation in Nigeria and how the country would need to take the power transmission lines as a highway.

In his answers, he demonstrated a vast knowledge of economic management and a perfect understanding of Nigeria’s political economy, Onanuga added.

“Tinubu impressed the panel during the screening process with the way and manner he answered and provided insight into many of the questions asked.

“The screening committee expressed satisfaction with Tinubu’s knowledge of the economy and socio-political issues that are affecting the country,” he said of the screening which he described as successful.

The Federal High Court in Abuja has granted bail to a presidential aspirant and former governor of Imo State, Rochas Okorocha.

He was granted bail on Tuesday by Justice Inyang Ekwo in the sum of N50 million and a surety in like sum.

Justice Inyang Ekwo gave the order while ruling on the bail application filed by Okorocha who currently represents Imo West senatorial district in the National Assembly.

He ordered that the surety must be a responsible citizen who has landed property in the like sum of the bail granted to the presidential aspirant.

The judge also directed Okorocha to deposit his international passport with the registry of the court and should not travel outside the jurisdiction of the court without the court’s permission.

Similarly, he ordered the court registry to inform the Nigeria Immigration Service that Okorocha’s international passport was in its custody.

Justice Ekwo, however, ordered that the former governor should remain in the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) until his bail conditions were met.
