Bolanle Raheem: Court sentenced police officer Darambi Vandi to death by hanging

A suspended ASP, Drambi Vandi, who was charged with shooting dead a Lagos-based lawyer, Omobolanle Raheem, last Christmas day, has been sentenced to death by hanging.

Justice Ibironke Harrison sitting at the Tafawa Balewa Square annex division of the Lagos state High Court said his defence that he didn't shoot the deceased has no leg to stand on.

He was found guilty on the strength of the witnesses of the prosecution, who gave 'overwhelming evidence that the loud gunshot ave the judgment date on July 13 after the adoption of final written addresses by counsel in the case.

Mr. Vandi was arraigned on Jan. 16 2023, on a count charge of murder but he pleaded not guilty.

The court granted an accelerated hearing on the case.

The Lagos State Government alleged that the defendant, an Assistant Superintendent of Police who has now been suspended from the Force, shot Mrs Raheem in the chest on Dec. 25, 2022, at Ajah Roundabout, on Lekki- Expressway, Lagos State.

The crime contravenes Section 223 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

The Prosecution team led by a former attorney general and Commissioner for Justice, Moyosore Onigbanjo (SAN), called a total of 11 witnesses including eight police officers.

The prosecution closed its case on Feb. 25.

On Feb. 28, the defendant through his counsel, Gbenro Gbadamosi, filed an application, praying the court to quash the charge against him.

On April 3, the court, however, dismissed the no-case submission.

Justice Harrison held that the prosecution established sufficient oral and documentary evidence linking the defendant to the alleged crime, which required an explanation from him.

Defence Headquarters On Alert As French Troops Depart Niger

There is fear of spillover violence in Northern Nigeria following the withdrawal of French troops from Niger Republic after the military junta’s overthrow of the democratically elected President Mohamed Bazoum over two months ago.

Security experts say the development could weaken Niger’s defence architecture, making the neighbouring country vulnerable to terror attacks.

The secretary general, International Institute of Professional Security (IIPS) Dr. Abdullahi Mohammed Jabi, said the withdrawal could spell doom for the coupists who had refused diplomatic overtures.

“French troops’ withdrawal will pose a challenge to Niger in their fight against terror groups. That would have been their back-up, but now they are pulling out. The withdrawal will further weaken the strength of Niger Military and make them prone to attacks because some of the international community structures are being withdrawn”.

He said the development would make the country open for terrorist groups “like they are doing in Libya now. So if care is not taken, there would be no country like Niger in the nearest future because the coupist cannot hold the centre as there will be factionalisation and therefore the centre will not hold.

“It is a healthy development for people wishing to restore democracy in the country

For us, we have to strengthen border surveillance and fortification. We must strengthen our border security in terms of personnel and equipment to forestall spillover effects to our boundary communities.”

The director of defence Information, Brig-Gen Tukur Gusau, said the Armed Forces of Nigeria was studying the developments in Niger Republic and would act accordingly to protect Nigeria and the continent.

“The defence headquarters is studying the development, the implication and the rest. So definitely if there is a need for us to act, we will. Of course, we cannot allow anything to happen to the continent. We’ll make sure that we do what the constitution empowers us to do, but at the moment, we are studying the development in Niger. There is no cause for alarm.”

Marketers raise the alarm over lightness of petrol

Marketers of the Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) petrol have raised the alarm over the lightness of the product in some retail outlets, noting that it is inferior to the quality the Nigerian Midstream and Upstream Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) approved.

They described some of the products imported to Nigeria as evaporating and undurable.

The Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN), National Vice President, Mr. John Keke Ocha, broke the news at Natural Oil and Gas Suppliers Association of Nigeria (NOGASA) National Executive Council (NEC) in Abuja.

According to him, lack of adequate legitimate domestic refining of petroleum has paved the way for the importation of all manners of products to meet consumer needs.

Explaining that absence of in – country refining has led to the importation of different grades of petrol, he lamented that the consumers have no choice.

He advised the Federal Government to look inward to ensure the national and private refineries are functional.

His words: “The prayer of this house is that government must look inward to ensure our refineries are put to use to create room for reduction of these high petroleum products importation as we are saying today.

“A lot of people don’t use their vehicles again. If you put N20,000 or N30,000 fuel in your car, before two days the thing is gone. I don’t know whether it is evaporating. “Sometimes, I ask myself what has happened to the N30,000 fuel that I bought yesterday.

The thing (fuel gauge) has started showing red.

“I don’t know if the type of product we have is no more like the original product that we used to get.

“This is because the competition has made it convenient for importers to get very light and all kinds of product to the country. And we accommodate it because we don’t have alternative".

NDLEA replies Nigerian Police over Mohbad’s Death

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has responded to the police enquiry on the alleged arrest and detention of the late artiste, Ilerioluwa Oladimeji Aloba, aka MohBad.

In a statement released on Saturday, October 7, 2023, the NDLEA said it sent its response to the police on Thursday, September 28, 2023. The agency also attached a copy of the acknowledged letter to the statement.

The NDLEA’s response categorically denied that MohBad was ever arrested or detained in its custody on February 24, 2022, or any other date. The agency also stated that it did not give MohBad any substance to drink.

The NDLEA’s response comes after the Lagos State Police Command stated at a press conference on Friday, October 6, 2023, that it was yet to get a response from the agency on the allegations.

The full statement reads:
