ERIN-ILE ROAD: A BORDER COMMUNITY CRIES OUT AS STRATEGIC KWARA–OSUN LINK DETERIORATES
The deplorable condition of the road passing through Erin-Ile in Oyun Local Government Area of Kwara State has once again raised serious concerns over the safety of motorists, residents and businesses that depend on the important interstate corridor.
Erin-Ile is strategically located on the boundary between Kwara and Osun states, making the road through the community more than a local access route. It provides an important connection between communities in Kwara and neighbouring Osun State and facilitates the movement of people, agricultural produce, goods and services.
Yet, as footage obtained by Gold Rims Media shows, portions of the road have deteriorated severely, with extensive waterlogging and damaged sections making movement difficult and potentially dangerous, particularly during the rainy season.
The situation is hardly new.
As far back as 2012, concerns were being raised about accidents and the condition of the Offa–Erin-Ile road linking Kwara with Osun State. Community leaders at the time appealed to both the Federal and Kwara State governments for urgent intervention.
Federal project records have also referenced the Ajase-Ipo–Offa–Erin-Ile–Osun State Boundary Road, confirming the strategic importance of this corridor and the long-standing recognition of the need for intervention.
More than a decade later, the people of Erin-Ile are still confronted with the consequences of a deteriorating road.
This is not merely an Erin-Ile problem.
A road connecting two states affects interstate commerce, transportation costs, access to markets, emergency services and the economic wellbeing of surrounding communities. For an agrarian community such as Erin-Ile, reliable transportation infrastructure is particularly important for getting farm produce to markets.
The good people of Erin-Ile therefore calls on the Federal Government, the Federal Ministry of Works, the Federal Roads Maintenance Agency and other relevant authorities to urgently assess the affected corridor and provide a lasting intervention.
Where jurisdiction or responsibility overlaps between federal and state authorities, that should not become an excuse for continued deterioration. The Kwara State Government and representatives of the area at the National Assembly also have important roles to play in escalating the condition of the road and ensuring that the community receives the attention it deserves.
The people of Erin-Ile should not have to wait for another tragedy before action is taken.
This road connects communities. It supports livelihoods. It carries travellers between states. It deserves urgent attention.
This calls for action, not another temporary promise.
