I almost talked myself out of following up.

On a certain Tuesday, I completed a paid trial for a company.

Days went by, and I didn’t receive the payment. I sent a polite email to follow up, thinking maybe there had been a delay or perhaps I had missed an update because of network issues.

No response.

At that moment, I realized something important,following up professionally is not being desperate.

Many of us have been conditioned to think that asking about money we’ve earned makes us look impatient. It doesn’t.

If you’ve delivered the work you agreed to do, you have every right to ask for an update. Being respectful and professional doesn’t mean staying silent.

A few lessons from this experience:
• Always clarify the payment timeline before starting a paid trial.
• Keep written records of conversations and agreements.
• Follow up politely if payment is delayed.
• Know your worth your skills and time have value.

This isn’t about calling anyone out. It’s about encouraging professionals, especially freelancers and job seekers, to advocate for themselves with confidence and respect.
