I learnt this content strategy from Google’s Think with Google platform in 2015.

It’s a very simple framework for content marketing that you can use to easily develop content for brands/businesses.

It’s a 3-part framework:

Hygiene Content (a.k.a. Help Content): You know who you want to reach. But to draw viewers to your platform, you need to capture their intent — that is, understand what they're searching for when they come to your platform and provide content for that.

Hub Content: This is regular, scheduled content that provides a reason to subscribe to a channel and return on a regular basis. Episodic and formatted series work best as hub content. This can be a series on a particular subject/topic/interest.

Hero Content: This refers to the big, tent-pole events that are designed to provide a massive step-change to your audience growth. Think of live virtual/physical events, brand campaigns, etc.

The #1 number skill in digital marketing for high income is not what you think.

If I had to recommend, I’ll start with the number 2 skill, that would be “Digital Strategy”. Yes, there’s a different skill that takes the number 1 spot.

Let’s talk about Digital Strategy as the number 2 skill. The digital strategist is responsible for bring it all together. From social media marketing to paid media, influencer marketing and everything in between, the digital strategist is the conductor of the orchestra.

The number 1 spot goes to a “Fullstack Digital Marketer”. Not only does this person understand the key concepts of digital marketing, but they also understand the key concepts of other aspects of marketing, advertising, public relations, marketing technology, etc. and they can bring it all together to drive real business objectives. This sets them at the top of the food chain.

Becoming a “Fullstack Digital Marketer” is the number 1 skill you need to have to become a high income earner in the digital marketing space in 2024 and beyond.

Learn the fundamentals: There are a few courses and training programs online. Take some of these to start growing your skills in digital marketing. This is important even if you studied digital marketing as a first degree. Trust me, it's different.

Join a digital marketing agency: Even if you must volunteer, this step is essential. The digital marketing agency introduces you to real-life experiences in the digital and broader marketing communications space. This will help sharpen your skillset and broaden your experience in digital marketing across multiple categories/segments.

Fullstack Coaching Programs: As you grow on the job, join coaching programs to sharpen your skillset beyond digital marketing to other aspects of marketing. The digital marketer of today and the future is a fullstack digital marketer with skillsets that cut across the marketing field.

Business Objectives: The days of simply posting on social media and referring to yourself as a “digital marketer” is long gone. You must ensure that digital is driving real business objectives. How do you deliver digital marketing strategies and tactics that drive real business outcomes like sales, revenue, profit, etc.?

Customer/Audience: The customer/audience we want to serve should remain at the centre of what we do as digital marketers. You cannot lose sight of that. Their behaviour, trends, goals, fears, etc. all matters.

Omni-channel Thinking: Digital marketing cannot operate in isolation. You must figure out how digital ties to all other channels to deliver a truly holistic and meaningful experience for the customer/audience you serve.

These 3 tips are essential to developing digital marketing strategies that work!

Stop learning digital marketing on Coursera & Udemy. Here's why...

Don’t get me wrong, there’s a lot of value to you can get from taking courses on these platforms, especially when you are just starting out.

However, for you to become a true expert in the digital marketing space, these platforms are not enough, and I’ll tell you.

Lack of relevant local case studies: One major challenge with these platforms is that they rarely have case studies from this part of the world, which sometimes makes it difficult to apply what you learn.

Local context: Sometimes, you discover that the course material is based on behaviour, trends, etc. in Europe & USA. Most times, these regions have very different context and realities compared to other regions.

Teaching style/format: The courses mostly lack hands-on/workshop formats. These formats help drive deeper understanding of the concepts taught in the course compared to a presentation-style format.

I always recommend learning from experienced experts in your region with relevant cases studies and course materials to deliver a truly meaningful learning experience.

I went from $0 to $30,000 per annum salary in about 2 years. Here’s how it happened…

I started my digital marketing career in 2009. I recall purchasing cybercafe/internet café tickets to learn digital marketing online because I didn’t have a laptop or PC at the time.

I came across “Digital Marketing” in a marketing management book by Philip Kotler as a growing trend and I decided to look into it.

I ended up learning digital marketing on my own using free online resources by Google. In a few months I became one of the first Nigerians to have a Google digital marketing certification.

By 2011, I got my first job as a Senior Executive, Search Engine Marketing with a $1,000 per month salary. That’s about ₦159,000 at the time.

In a few short months, I was promoted to Digital Marketing Manager and the following year to Senior Manager, Digital Strategy with a salary of $2,500 per month salary. That’s about ₦397,000 at the time (circa 2012).

I honestly believe that there's a lot of opportunity out there for digital marketers.

Learning Digital Marketing is not enough! Let me tell you why.

There’s a BIG difference between “Digital Marketing” and “Marketing”.

Employers and businesses have a challenge with digital marketers that don’t understand the fundamentals of “Marketing”.

Digital Marketing is a type/aspect of Marketing. There are other aspects of marketing that you must understand, not at an expert level but an understanding of the basic principles of these aspects are required.

I see this so many times when I interview “Digital Marketers”, “Social Media Managers”, “Digital Strategists”, etc. There’s a huge knowledge gap!

You must seek out learning resources, courses, or programs that can help you fill this knowledge gap.
