To the Youths of Makurdi, Benue State!
I have observed multiple video recordings showing what appears to be a state-coordinated obstruction and attack on Mr. Peter Obi, Presidential Candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, as he sought to enter the state capital to pay respects to victims of the Yelwata incident.
I condemn in the strongest terms these acts of political intimidation allegedly carried out by agents of the state government. Such conduct is inconsistent with democratic norms, human decency, and the rule of law.
It is particularly troubling that a visit meant to commiserate with grieving families and honor the deceased was met with hostility. While citizens have raised consistent concerns regarding governance and the delivery of public infrastructure, it is unacceptable for any group to purport to act on behalf of the people to prevent acts of solidarity and mourning.
No citizen, least of all a presidential candidate, should be denied the right to peaceful movement and engagement through violence, intimidation, or the use of state resources. Those responsible for these actions are undermining our democracy and the constitutional rights of all Nigerians.
I call on the relevant authorities to immediately ensure the safety of all citizens and political actors, and to allow peaceful and lawful activities across the country without hindrance.
