JUST IN : I Told Peter Obi, ‘If You Bring Someone We Do Not Know, We Will Not Support Him’ - Azomchine Reveals
In a recent interview on Trust TV, on Thursday, June 11, 2026, former ally of Peter Obi, Ikenna Azomchine, revisited internal disagreements within the Obedient movement and the political considerations that shaped support structures ahead of the 2023 general elections, while also reflecting on the evolving landscape of opposition politics in Nigeria as attention shifts toward 2027.
The discussion focused on issues of trust, candidate selection, and grassroots acceptance within political movements that rely heavily on volunteer mobilisation and community-driven support. Azomchine argued that cohesion within such structures often depends on familiarity, shared understanding, and confidence in leadership decisions.
Speaking during the interview, Azomchine stated, “I told Peter Obi, ‘If you bring someone we do not know, we will not support him.’” He made the remark while recalling earlier tensions within the movement regarding the introduction of unfamiliar figures into key organisational roles during the build-up to elections.
He explained that the statement was not intended as a personal attack but rather a reflection of concerns held by some supporters about maintaining consistency and trust within the political structure. According to him, grassroots movements are often sensitive to changes in leadership composition, especially when such changes are not widely communicated or agreed upon.
Azomchine further noted that political mobilisation in Nigeria is highly dependent on established networks, where recognition and credibility play a significant role in sustaining participation. He argued that introducing unknown individuals into strategic positions without broad acceptance can weaken coordination and reduce effectiveness.
He also reflected on the broader challenges faced by opposition movements in maintaining unity.
