One day, two of my students got into trouble, but I couldn’t figure out who was actually at fault because they kept blaming each other. Based on the evidence I had, I punished the one it pointed to. As he was being punished, crying and in pain, the other boy couldn’t take it anymore. He finally confessed that he was the real culprit and had pushed his friend to do it.

I was supposed to punish him too, but something struck me: why did he wait until his friend was suffering before stepping up? Why didn’t he confess earlier? And you know the funny thing? The rest of the students were clapping and feeling good that he confessed. They were happy the innocent boy would be set free. But I couldn’t help but wonder, why did it take pity to bring out the truth?

It made me think about how we sometimes mistake pity for love. People wait until someone is in pain before they show they care, and that’s not love. It’s pity. Love doesn’t wait for suffering—it acts because it genuinely cares, not because it feels guilty.

Let me say this: if someone helps you out of a tough situation, it doesn’t always mean they love you. It’s like giving money to a beggar. You might help because you feel sorry for them, but that’s not love. In Yoruba, we say, “O ma se ooo” (what a pity). Many of us are being helped out of pity and calling it love.

Please, let’s be clear—help is help, and love is love. Don’t confuse the two. And most importantly, don’t fall for love out of pity. True love doesn’t wait for pain; it’s always present, consistent, and genuine.

I was tired, completely drained, lying helplessly as we drove through the quiet streets late at night.

Then, I noticed something captivating, the streetlights. They stood tall, shining brightly, unshaken by the darkness around them.

I found myself staring at them, and in that moment, a wave of joy washed over me, almost as if their light had reached out to comfort me.

I couldn’t help but ask myself, why do these streetlights bring so much beauty to a place filled with darkness?

What if these lights were human?

Imagine the joy they could bring to a lifeless or weary soul.

It made me reflect deeply on the power of light and influence.

We are all like stars meant to shine, but our true brightness is only seen when we bring light to the darkness around us.

If your influence in life is negative, your light fades, and your star becomes dim. But when you are a positive force in someone’s life, your light grows stronger, and your star shines even brighter.

The brightness of a star isn’t about how big it is, but how much it illuminates the dark parts of someone’s life.

As we step into this new year, think about the kind of star you want to be.

Are you shining just for yourself, or are you lighting up someone else’s darkness?

True impact comes from being a light that brings hope, joy, and positivity to others.

So, be a star. Shine brightly, and let your light brighten the lives of those around you.
