With the chairmanship election for the Broadcasting Organizations of Nigeria (BON) on the horizon, the race has become a contest between two primary candidates.

Notably, both individuals either currently belong or previously belonged to the same organization.

Tony Akiotu, who once served as Group Managing Director of DAAR Group and is now Chairman of M45, brings extensive experience from his years in broadcasting.

On the other hand, Raymond Dokpesi Jr. presently heads DAAR. Interestingly, both contenders share kinship ties to Agenebode.

For context, Akiotu is the current deputy to the outgoing BON Chairman, DG NTA Salihu Abdullahi Dembos, who secured the position through a rotational public sector arrangement and is concluding his two-year tenure.

By established BON practice, the next chairman will be selected from the private sector.

Within broadcasting circles, both Akiotu and Dokpesi Jr. are prominent figures; however, Akiotu’s almost five decades of industry experience make him widely regarded as the more seasoned professional. In comparison, Dokpesi Jr. only assumed leadership of DAAR after his father's passing a few years ago.

Many analysts predict an Akiotu victory, yet Dokpesi Jr. is expected to offer stiff competition in the election set for late January to mid-February 2026.

Meanwhile, Yusuf Isah, General Manager of Yobe Broadcasting Corporation, stands unopposed for the Vice Chairman post.

The upcoming year promises an engaging start for BON, and we extend our best wishes to all the candidates.

A lot has been written and said about Detty December lately, much of it bordering on the negative. Critics have questioned the Lagos State Government backed tourism initiative, now in its second year, as exploitative of its appeal to diasporan youths.

But watching the electrifying entrance of one of the star performers at the Ilubirin concert captured in this clip, just one of many events on the calendar; it’s clear that those criticisms miss the mark.

The energy, turnout, and sheer spectacle tell a different story.

If anything, Detty December is only getting “dettier,” with the potential to evolve into a full-blown carnival of global scale.

Nigeria’s fast-moving political landscape places a heavy responsibility on broadcasters, not just to report events, but to do so with depth and integrity.

Even as the country is still digesting the fallout from the Dangote-Farouk saga and the leadership changes in petroleum regulatory agencies, a new controversy has emerged over discrepancies between the Tax Act passed by lawmakers and the government gazette.

NewsCentral’s coverage of this issue, though timely, falls short. The report relies largely on quotations from The Punch and offers little original research, context, or analysis. Rather than informing the public, it leaves viewers confused.

On matters of such national importance, superficial reporting is inadequate. If NewsCentral seeks credibility as a serious news broadcaster, it must do better.

Veteran Actor Lere Paimo Alleges Unauthorized Remake of Classic Film

Legendary Nigerian actor and theatre icon, Chief Olalere Osunpaimo (MFR), popularly known as Lere Paimo or Eda Onile Ola, has accused the Soun of Ogbomoso, Oba Ghandi Afolabi Olaoye, and Fewchore Studio of attempting to remake his celebrated film Ogbori Elemoso without his permission.

Speaking at a press briefing on Wednesday at the NUJ Press Centre, BCOS, Ibadan, Paimo described the alleged move as a “calculated attempt to steal my intellectual property and undermine decades of work.”

The actor reminded journalists that Ogbori Elemoso, a cornerstone of Yoruba cinema, earned him both the national honour of Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR) and the prestigious chieftaincy title of Are Arobajo of Ogbomoso..
