Catfish farming in Nigeria 🐬
We visited a 100,000 capacity catfish farm and this is what we learnt below

1. The Hybrid breed is better than Clarias. This is because Clarias requires so much water. Infact, our interviewee told us that if you don’t have access to constant water, day in day out, you should consider hybrid instead.

2. You don’t necessarily have to buy a land before you can start catfish farming. You can rent a pond and just stock the pond with your fish. A pond rental in Ilorin-where we filmed the interview- goes for about N100,000 per annum. Our interviewee started by renting out a pond.

3. Before you stock your pond, please treat it. You can use formalin and salt to disinfect the pond. This eliminates the bacteria that might harm your fish. Disinfection is everything!

4. It’s not compulsory you start with many years of experience in catfish farming. But if you know you can’t cater to fingerlings (due to how fragile they are), you can go for juvenile or post juvenile since they are more stable and you will be able to reduce mortality rate.

5. There are different types of feed. There’s the floating feed which is ideal for fingerlings and the juveniles. This type of feed floats on the surface of the pond, making it easy for the smaller size of fishes to catch. Then there’s the sinking feed. The bigger guys can have the sinking feed. They are big enough to swim anywhere the feed is and eat. The type of feed you use largely depends on the size of your fishes and the stage they are in.

6. Lastly, don’t forget to sort your fishes. As fishes eat and grow, it is normal for all of them to not develop at the same rate/speed. Continuous sorting ensures that the bigger fish don’t feed on the smaller ones. Sorting helps reduce mortality rate but don’t sort under the sun!
