When Amaka said Atasa, Ngozi's arms tightened for one brief second before they loosened deliberately because she would not let her daughter feel her fury as something frightening. She tucked the fury away, behind her teeth, behind her ribs, into that deep internal furnace that Nigerian mothers are built with and rarely allowed to express. Then she released her daughter gently, straightened her own wrapper, picked up her telephone, and called her husband.

Emmanuel Okonkwo arrived home within forty minutes. He sat across from his daughter at the kitchen table where she had once done her mathematics homework with her tongue between her teeth, and he listened to his wife relay the story because Amaka could not say it twice yet. He did not interrupt. He did not shout.

When Ngozi finished, he was quiet for a very long time. Then he pressed his knuckles against his lips and shut his eyes, and when he opened them again they were wet, and he looked at Amaka and said: This is not your fault. Do you hear me? This is not one word of it your fault.

It was, perhaps, the most important sentence Amaka Okonkwo would hear in her entire childhood.
