Christian human rights reporter Luka Binniyat from Nigeria was detained after publishing an article in which she criticized the nation's leadership for failing to safeguard Christian communities.
Radicalized ethnic Fulani extremists frequently target and kill Christians in Nigeria's Middle Belt, which includes Kaduna state's northern region. Since the majority of Nigerian Christians are farmers and the Fulani are nomadic herders, the issue is frequently described as a farmer-herder dispute rather than the genocide that it is.
Binniyat said in his piece that Samuel Aruwan, Kaduna State's Commissioner of Internal Security and Home Affairs, mischaracterized the slaughter of Christians as a conflict between farmers and herders. On September 6, he will stand trial before a Nigerian magistrate on charges of online stalking and encouraging online criminal activity. He has disputed every accusation.
His piece appeared in the Epoch Times on October 29, 2021, with the title "In Nigeria, Police Decry Massacres as "Wicked" but Make No Arrest." The post described the murder of 38 Christians by armed Fulani extremists on September 28, 2021 in addition to criticizing Samuel Aruwan.
According to Robert Destro, a law professor at Catholic University and a former Assistant Secretary of State for Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor under the Trump administration, Luka Binniyat's arrest and trial are an effort to silence journalists who speak out about attacks on Christians in Nigeria.
In light of Luka Binniyat's impending trial, kindly pray for him and his family.
