IMHA Calls on Ministry of Education to Shut Down Unapproved Private Schools

The Imo State House of Assembly (IMHA) has urged the Ministry of Education to immediately close down all unapproved private primary and secondary schools in the state to maintain high educational standards.

This resolution followed a motion led by Hon. Prince Obinna Egu, PhD, representing the Ngor/Okpala State Constituency. The motion was seconded by Hon. Kanayo Onyemaechi, the Majority Leader and representative of Owerri West State Constituency. It was co-sponsored by several other lawmakers including Hon. Amara Chyna Iwuanyanwu, Hon. Chigozie Nwaneri, Hon. Francis Uche Agabige, Hon. Clinton Amadi, Hon. Innocent Ikpamezie, Hon. Sam Osuji, Hon. Emeka Ozurumba, Hon. Okey Udeze, and Hon. Princewill Amuchie.

As part of the motion's second prayer, the Ministry of Education was urged to release a list of approved schools that have met all necessary standards, to guide the people of Imo State in choosing the right institutions for their children.

While presenting the motion, Hon. Obinna Egu, who also chairs the House Committee on Education, explained that his motivation was driven by a desire to ensure Imo State maintains its high educational standards, literacy rate, and status as Nigeria's most educated state.

He emphasized that some private primary and secondary schools in the state have failed to meet the required standards set by government accrediting agencies. These schools lack proper certification and licensing, do not follow curriculum guidelines, have inadequate facilities, and employ unqualified and untrained teachers.

“These unapproved schools also fail to meet health and safety standards, and their admission procedures are often misleading," Hon. Egu added. He stressed that education plays a vital role in societal development and that Imo, with its impressive 96.48% literacy rate as reported by the National Bureau of Statistics, cannot afford to allow such schools to operate.

The Ngor Okpala lawmaker made it clear that this motion aims to prevent a decline in the quality of education in Imo State.

All lawmakers present at the plenary, including Hon. Innocent Ikpamezie (Mbaitoli), Hon. Sam Osuji (Isiala Mbano), Hon. Princewill Amuchie (Aboh Mbaise), Hon. Kanayo Onyemaechi (Owerri West), Hon. Amara Chyna Iwuanyanwu (Nwangele), Hon. Emeka Ozurumba (Isu), and Hon. Bernard Ozoemelam (Ehime Mbano), spoke in support of the motion. They commended Hon. Egu for raising the issue, highlighting that many of these unapproved schools operate as family businesses, where unqualified relatives hold key positions, from proprietors to teachers and accountants.

The lawmakers expressed concern over the inadequate curriculums and the practice of assigning unqualified teachers to multiple subjects, which results in poorly educated students. They called for collective efforts to address these issues and suggested that the Ministry of Education be required to publish a list of all approved schools in the state.

The Speaker, Rt. Hon. Chike Olemgbe put the motion to a vote, and it was unanimously adopted. The Clerk was directed to communicate the resolution to the Governor of Imo State.

SADC Mission Completes Counter-Terrorism Operations in Northern Mozambique.

On Thursday, the Southern African Development Community Mission in Mozambique (SAMIM) announced its decision to withdraw forces from Cabo Delgado, signalling the conclusion of its peacekeeping mission in the region.

Defence Minister CristĂłvĂŁo Chume and SAMIM Head of Mission Mpho Molomo led the closing ceremony in Pemba, the capital of Cabo Delgado province.

In his speech, Minister Chume commended SAMIM troops for their efforts in combating terrorism in Mozambique.

“The deployment of the SAMIM force has significantly bolstered the actions of the Mozambican Defence and Security Forces, enhancing their mission to pursue and eliminate terrorists on the battlefield, Chume stated.

The minister noted that terrorist bases have been dismantled, economic activity has resumed, people are moving freely again, the population is gradually returning to their homes, and the security situation in the province has improved.

Progress in the fight against terrorism is a victory for all SADC countries. The SAMIM mission has been crucial in addressing the terrorist threat in the region,” Chume said, highlighting the mission as an example of regional solidarity and a strategy for solving African problems.

However, the minister cautioned that despite the advances and the withdrawal of SAMIM forces, terrorist movements persist in some areas of Cabo Delgado, causing instability among the population.

Mozambican defence forces and Rwandan troops are currently patrolling the region.

During the ceremony, the minister paid tribute to the families of soldiers who lost their lives during the operations in Cabo Delgado. Weapons seized from terrorists since 2021 were also displayed.

The SADC Mission in Mozambique was deployed in July 2021 following approval by the Extraordinary SADC Summit of Heads of State and Government as a regional response to support Mozambique in combating terrorism.

Cameroon and Nigeria reach an agreement to resolve border disputes.

YAOUNDE, CAMEROON — Nigeria and Cameroon announced on Thursday that they will no longer seek a court ruling to settle their border dispute. Instead, joint delegations from both nations will validate a demarcation plan on site to end the longstanding territorial issues.

The two countries share approximately 2,100 kilometers (1,300 miles) of border, stretching from Lake Chad in the north to the Gulf of Guinea on the Atlantic Ocean coast.

Leonardo Santos Simao, chairperson of the Cameroon-Nigeria Mixed Commission, which was established by the United Nations to resolve the territorial disputes, expressed his delight that both nations opted to settle their issues without resorting to the lengthy and costly processes of the International Court of Justice.

The agreement to resolve the border disputes by the end of 2025 was reached during a meeting of the Mixed Commission held in Yaounde on Wednesday and Thursday. Simao described this agreement as a significant milestone.

Both countries agreed to visit disputed territories in Rumsiki and Tourou in northern Cameroon, and Koche in eastern Nigeria before the end of 2024.

Nigerian Justice Minister Lateef Olasunkanmi Fagbemi, who leads Nigeria's delegation to the Mixed Commission, confirmed that both countries aim to complete the project within 12 months. "It's a consensus between Cameroon and Nigeria. By the end of 2025, this project should be concluded," he said. "We have admirably and maturely handled the situation, ensuring there is hardly any dissent. We are satisfied with the outcome of the two-day meeting and are hopeful that there is light at the end of the tunnel."

The demarcation process had been slowed by Boko Haram terrorism in both countries. However, with the group's reduced firepower, both nations believe the demarcation can now proceed.

Cameroon and Nigeria also plan to address existing differences over the precise location of the border in about 30 villages.

The Cameroon-Nigeria Mixed Commission was established in 2002 at the request of Cameroon's President Paul Biya and Nigeria's then-leader Olusegun Obasanjo to implement an October 10, 2002, International Court of Justice ruling that ceded the oil-rich Bakassi peninsula to Cameroon. Although Nigeria initially rejected the verdict, with its senate arguing that the ruling, based on a colonial-era agreement, was unfair and should be appealed, Nigerian officials later agreed that the verdict should be respected.

Avoush: The African Giant Breaking Records and Facing Challenges

In the heart of Ghana, a remarkable man named Avoush has captured the world's attention. At 29 years old and standing at an astounding 2.89 meters (9 feet 5 inches), Avoush holds the title of the tallest man in the world, shattering all previous Guinness World Records. Known as the African giant, his towering height surpasses that of most houses, making him a living legend.

A Life Marked by Gigantism

Avoush's extraordinary height is the result of gigantism, a condition characterized by excessive growth due to an overproduction of growth hormone. Unfortunately, his family was financially strapped, preventing him from receiving the necessary medical treatment for several years. As a result, his condition went untreated, leading to a myriad of challenges in his daily life.

Everyday Struggles

Living with gigantism has brought numerous difficulties for Avoush. Simple tasks that most people take for granted are significant obstacles for him. He can't wear ordinary sandals because his feet are too large, and walking short distances has become increasingly difficult. Despite his love for football, his height and physical limitations prevent him from playing the sport he adores.

Dreams Deferred

Avoush once dreamed of becoming a driver, but his height posed yet another barrier. During his driving lessons, he discovered that his legs were too long to fit comfortably in a standard vehicle. This realization was a hard blow to his aspirations, but it did not diminish his spirit or determination.

The Urgent Need for Surgery

Recently, doctors have informed Avoush that he urgently needs brain surgery to stop his continued growth. However, Ghana's public health insurance does not cover such specialized operations, offering only basic treatments. Each hospital visit costs $50, a sum that Avoush and his family must borrow from neighbours and friends.

A Plea for Help

Avoush's greatest dream is to undergo the surgery that will halt his growth and alleviate his physical burdens. Despite the financial and logistical hurdles, he remains hopeful. His story is a poignant reminder of the resilience of the human spirit and the importance of compassion and support from the global community.

Conclusion

Avoush's journey is one of incredible strength and perseverance. As he continues to navigate the challenges posed by his extraordinary height, he stands as a symbol of determination and hope. With the right support, Avoush can achieve his dream of undergoing surgery and living a more comfortable life. His story calls for our collective effort to help make this dream a reality.

Mozambique: Drug Trafficking Arrests Announced.

Maputo — Mozambique's Central Office for the Fight against Organised and Transnational Crime (GCCCOT) announced on Friday a crackdown on a drug trafficking ring involving Mozambican, Nigerian, and Mexican nationals. These individuals had been smuggling illicit drugs into the country through Maputo International Airport.

According to a GCCCOT release, a key figure in the operation, a Mozambican woman, was arrested on May 2. She had been coordinating the entry of foreign traffickers into the country with the help of some Nigerians and officials responsible for issuing Mozambican entry visas.

The woman, whose name was not disclosed, had been under GOT surveillance for some time. The release includes a photo of her (with her face obscured) receiving Mexican citizens at the airport.

GOT investigations uncovered a drug production facility in the Vundica locality, Moamba district, about 60 kilometres north of Maputo. This facility was operated by Nigerians and Mexicans, whose entry into the country had been facilitated by the arrested Mozambican woman. The Nigerians and Mexicans involved are currently on the run.

The GOT release features photos of the drug factory but does not specify the type of drugs being produced. In previous cases, the main drug produced was mandrax, which has a significant market in South Africa.

In addition to the drug factory, the same foreign nationals were operating a vegetable farm, which the GCCCOT believes was used to disguise the illicit origins of their funds.
