Instead, it pumps seawater through its body.

A network called the water vascular system uses seawater to move nutrients, transport oxygen and even power the tiny tube feet that help the starfish crawl, grip rocks and pry open shellfish.

In other words, every step it takes is driven by water pressure.

A crocodile can't stick out its tongue.

Not because it's lazy.

Because it physically can't.

A tough membrane anchors the tongue firmly to the floor of the mouth, preventing it from moving freely the way ours does.

That adaptation is useful.

When a crocodile lunges at prey or spends time underwater, the tongue stays securely in place while a flap at the back of the throat helps keep water out of the airway.

Sometimes, the most interesting part of an animal isn't what it can do.

It's what evolution stopped it from doing.

A chameleon's tongue isn't just long.

It's incredibly fast.

When it spots an insect, its tongue can shoot out at speeds of around 20 feet (6 meters) per second, reaching its target in a fraction of a second.

The sticky tip wraps around the prey and pulls it back almost instantly.

The entire strike is over before many insects have time to react.

It's one of the fastest feeding movements ever recorded in a land animal.

If you've ever looked closely at a flamingo, you might think its knees bend backwards.

They don't.

What most people mistake for a knee is actually the flamingo's ankle.

Its real knee is hidden much higher up inside its feathers, close to the body.

That unusually long lower leg is one of the reasons flamingos can wade through deeper water while keeping most of their body dry.

Sometimes nature isn't playing tricks.

A giraffe's blood pressure is so high that, if it were a human, it would be considered a medical emergency.

It has to be.

The giraffe's heart has to pump blood nearly two meters upward to reach its brain.

Without that extra pressure, the brain wouldn't get enough oxygen every time the giraffe lifted its head.

But there's another challenge.

When the giraffe lowers its head to drink, all that pressure could send too much blood rushing toward the brain.

To prevent that, its blood vessels and special valves help regulate the flow, protecting the brain from dangerous pressure changes.

It's one of the most remarkable examples of biology solving a problem that comes with being the tallest land animal on Earth.

A decorator crab never stays dressed for long.

As it grows or moves into a new area, it often changes what it's wearing.

Using tiny hook-like hairs on its shell, the crab carefully attaches pieces of seaweed, sponges, soft corals and even small marine animals to its body.

It's more than camouflage.

Some of the living organisms it wears can sting or taste unpleasant, making predators think twice before taking a bite.

In other words, the crab doesn't just hide from danger.

It wears its own security system.

At first, everyone thought the giant ocean sunfish was already dead.

Then an orca swam up to it.

Instead of immediately eating it, the orca rammed the enormous fish with such force that pieces flew into the water.

The behavior was repeated again and again, almost like a game.

Young orcas joined in, taking turns as if they were practicing.

The sunfish's thick skin is one of the toughest in the ocean, so breaking it apart may make it easier for younger whales to feed.

But there's another possibility.

Orcas are among the most intelligent animals on Earth, and they often invent playful behaviors that spread through their families.

By the time I reached the watering hole, everyone had already heard the stories.

Dangerous.

Unpredictable.

Bad-tempered.

The kind of animal you don't want nearby.

I can't say I blame them.

The scars on my face tell a convincing story.

The broken tip of my horn doesn't exactly help.

Still...

Most days are surprisingly ordinary.

A drink of water.

A patch of shade.

A quiet afternoon beneath the sun.

No dramatic battles.

No charging across the plains.

No interest in proving anything to anyone.

Yet the moment I appear, birds take flight.

Antelope step aside.

Whispers seem to travel faster than my footsteps.

It's funny.

Sometimes a reputation becomes so large that nobody notices the animal standing behind it.

And the truth is much simpler than the stories.

Today, all I wanted was a drink.
