C’RIVER IPAC CONDEMNS DISRUPTION OF GENERAL COUNCIL MEETING, SETS UP DISCIPLINARY COMMITTEE

The Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC), Cross River State Chapter, has condemned the alleged disruption of its General Council Meeting by the chairmen of six political parties, describing the incident as an affront to democratic principles and the constitutional processes of the Council.

In a statement signed by the State Secretary of IPAC, Patr. Ogar Osim, the Council alleged that the chairmen of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Allied Peoples Movement (APM), Young Progressive Party (YPP), Zenith Labour Party (ZLP), Peoples Redemption Party (PRP), and Boots Party deliberately disrupted the meeting.

According to the statement, the General Council Meeting was convened after a successful and peaceful Executive Council Meeting and had been proceeding smoothly until the intervention of the six party chairmen.

IPAC said the incident was regrettable, stressing that the conduct of the affected party leaders was capable of undermining the spirit of dialogue, cooperation and peaceful coexistence which, according to the Council, forms the basis of inter-party engagement.

The Council described the alleged disruption as an attempt to undermine the authority of the General Council and warned that no individual or group, irrespective of political affiliation or status, would be allowed to hold the Council to ransom or intimidate its members.

“IPAC wishes to make it abundantly clear that no group of persons, regardless of their political affiliation or status, can hold the Council to ransom or intimidate the overwhelming majority of members who remain committed to due process, constitutionalism, and democratic order,” the statement said.

The Council further announced the constitution of a Special Disciplinary Committee by the General Council to investigate the circumstances surrounding the disruption and recommend appropriate measures in accordance with the IPAC Constitution, guidelines and established procedures.

IPAC said the committee was expected to conduct its assignment fairly and objectively, with the broader objective of protecting the unity, credibility and institutional integrity of the Council.

The Council also appealed to its members to remain calm and law-abiding, urging them to remain focused on strengthening democratic practice and promoting peaceful inter-party relations in Cross River State.

It reaffirmed its commitment to due process, internal democracy and the rule of law, maintaining that attempts to disrupt its constitutional activities would not deter it from carrying out its responsibilities.

The statement was endorsed by representatives of the Action for People of Nigeria (APP), Labour Party (LP), African Democratic Congress (ADC), National Rescue Movement (NRM), Action Democratic Party (ADP), All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Accord, Action Alliance (AA), Social Democratic Party (SDP), Young Progressives Party (YP) and NNPP.

Amb. Asegem Emmanuel Hosts Yala Legislators, Mobilises Support for Gov. Otu Ahead of 2027

The Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Timber Control North, Chief Amb. Asegem Emmanuel, on Saturday hosted members of the Yala Local Government Area Legislature at his country home in Ijiraga Ward, South Ukelle, for a strategic engagement focused on grassroots mobilisation and support for the administration of Governor Bassey Otu ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Chief Asegem urged the councillors to strengthen their presence across their respective wards and mobilise the people for the All Progressives Congress (APC), with a commitment to delivering a 5/5 victory for the party in Yala Local Government Area.

He called on the legislators to remain steadfast in their support for Governor Otu, pointing to the administration’s ongoing projects and interventions across Cross River State as evidence of its commitment to development.

Speaking on the impact of the Governor’s projects in the northern part of the state, Chief Asegem cited Ogoja, noting the remarkable transformation taking place in the town as a result of ongoing infrastructure projects.

He also referenced the Mfom–Okpoma–Okuku–Ogoja dual carriageway as one of the major projects with significant implications for Yala and the surrounding communities, particularly in improving connectivity and economic activities.

The Senior Special Assistant expressed confidence in the political strength of the APC in Yala and assured that the local government would deliver a 5/5 result for the party in the 2027 elections.

FROM OGOJA FARMS TO UK TABLES: SANTUSCOM TAKES "PEOPLE FIRST" TO THE INTERNATIONAL MARKET

For too long the story of Nigerian agriculture has been told in whispers behind closed doors, in markets that close at dusk, and in homes where the scent of cooking fills the air but never travels beyond our borders. We plant. We harvest. We feed ourselves. We celebrate the flavor in family gatherings and in the quiet pride of a meal shared. Yet the world has rarely been invited to the table. That quiet is ending now.

Today Santuscom, a company born in the soil of Ogoja in Cross River State and raised on the belief that business must serve people before it serves profit, is stepping onto a larger stage. We are bringing the taste of our land to the United Kingdom. Not as a novelty. Not as an afterthought in an ethnic aisle. But as a deliberate, well-crafted introduction of Ogoja Premium Rice, Ijebu and Yellow Garri, Cold-Pressed Palm Oil, Raw Ogoja Forest Honey, and Authentic Nigerian Spice Blends to kitchens that have been waiting for them. This is not just export. It is reconnection. It is memory carried in a bag, in a bottle, in a jar. It is guided by four words we refuse to treat as decoration: PEOPLE FIRST. SERVICE ALWAYS.

Look at the United Kingdom and you will see why this moment matters. There are more than 250,000 Nigerians living there, and more than 2 million people of African and Caribbean heritage who understand the language of stew, soup, and shared meals. In Peckham on a Saturday morning, in Woolwich markets, in community centers in Manchester, in student halls in Birmingham and Liverpool, the conversation is the same. People are searching for the taste of home without compromise. They are tired of substitutes. They are tired of products that arrive with no name, no face, no farm behind them. The UK spends well over £500 million each year on African and Caribbean foods, yet too much of that money leaves without building anything back here. Santuscom intends to change that equation. We are coming not to extract, but to add value at both ends of the journey.

What exactly is arriving on those shelves? It begins with Ogoja Premium Rice, grown where the soil is generous and the rain is honest. This is parboiled rice, stone-free, with the natural aroma that tells you it was handled with care from seed to bag. It is the rice for Sunday lunch, for birthdays, for the pot that must feed a crowd and still leave everyone asking for more. We are packaging it in resealable 1kg, 2.5kg and 5kg bags because UK homes are busy and storage matters, but the quality inside will remind you of open fire and wooden spoons. Behind every bag are more than 500 farmers in Ogoja and neighboring communities whose livelihoods are tied to the decision you make at the till.

Then there is Ijebu and Yellow Garri. Cassava transformed by heat and skill into something that keeps, that travels, that comforts. It is gluten-free, it is quick, and it is deeply Nigerian. Whether you prefer it as eba, as sarco with groundnuts, or even as a quick cereal on a cold morning, it belongs in the pantry. We have sealed it to survive the journey and to keep its texture, because dignity is in the details.

Our Cold-Pressed Palm Oil comes next. No shortcuts, no chemical bleaching, no dilution. Just the deep red oil that gives banga its color and egusi its depth. Bottled in 500ml and 1L containers that are safe and practical for UK kitchens, it is proof that tradition and standards can live in the same bottle.

From the forests of Northern Cross River comes Raw Ogoja Forest Honey. It is unprocessed, unfiltered, and full of the character of the trees where the bees work. In a 350g glass jar it becomes more than a sweetener. It becomes medicine, it becomes gift, it becomes a small piece of the rainforest in a London flat.

And to tie it all together, the Authentic Nigerian Spice Blends. Jollof Spice that knows how to sing. Suya Spice with heat and smoke. Banga Spice that understands palm fruit. Packaged in 100g sachets, they are small but they carry the power to turn any cooking pot into a place of memory.

None of this would matter if it did not meet the standards of the market we are entering. Every Santuscom product heading to the UK will carry the required certifications, clear nutritional information, and traceability. Each pack will have a QR code. Scan it and you will see the farm, the processor, the hands involved. That is what we mean by service. Service is not a slogan shouted at a rally. Service is answering the question a customer in Leeds asks at 10pm on a website. Service is making sure a container that leaves Lagos arrives in Felixstowe on time and in good condition. Service is standing behind the product when something is not right and fixing it without argument.

This move is also about economics that makes sense for the people who do the work. When a bag of Ogoja Rice is bought in London, a farmer in Ogoja receives payment that helps pay school fees. A woman in a processing cooperative earns wages that keep her children fed. A young graduate in Calabar finds employment in quality control, in logistics, in digital marketing for an export brand. That is what "People First" looks like in practice. It is not charity. It is a value chain where everyone is visible.

We are entering the UK through the places where trust already exists. African and Caribbean supermarkets in London, Manchester, Birmingham and other cities will be the first home for Santuscom. We will also be on Amazon UK and on specialist online platforms like AfroFoodMarket because diaspora life is digital as much as it is physical. We will work with caterers, with restaurants, with the people who cook for weddings and birthdays and Sunday gatherings, because food is never just nutrition. It is ceremony. Over time we will engage mainstream retailers who have a world foods section, not by begging for space, but by proving demand, proving quality, and proving that customers will return for a second bag.

There is a larger picture here that goes beyond one company. Nigeria must earn foreign exchange beyond oil. Cross River must turn its agricultural advantage into jobs and enterprises. The UK market is a test and a classroom. If we can meet British standards for food safety, for packaging, for consistency, then we can meet standards anywhere. If we can tell a story that resonates with a Nigerian nurse in Croydon, then we can tell a story that resonates with a curious British foodie in Bristol who has never tasted palm oil but is willing to try. This is how brands are built. Not by shouting, but by showing up every day with a product that does what it promises.

We know the road will not be smooth. Shipping is expensive. Regulations are strict. Competition is real. But we also know that people are hungry for authenticity. They are willing to pay for food that has a source, that has a face, that has a purpose beyond the transaction. Santuscom is that purpose made edible.

So to our brothers and sisters in the UK, we say this: look for us. Ask for us in your local shop. Try the rice in your next jollof. Pour the palm oil into your next soup and see if it does not take you back. Share the honey with a friend and tell them where it came from. And tell us what you think, because service means listening.

To our partners in retail, distribution and logistics: let us build something durable together. We are not looking for a one-off container. We are looking for a long relationship where quality is non-negotiable and growth is shared.

To our government agencies and policymakers: this is the kind of export that creates jobs at home and reputation abroad. Support it with smoother export processes, with access to finance for packaging and certification, and with a clear message that Nigeria is open for value-added agro business.

The world does not need another anonymous commodity. The world needs food that remembers where it came from. Food that carries the name of a place and the work of people. From the farms of Ogoja, through the hands of Santuscom, to the tables of the United Kingdom, we are making that journey.

Santuscom is here. People First. Service Always.
And this is only the beginning.

Gov. Otu Flags Off South-South Farm Input Support Programme, Distributes 80,640 Bags of Fertilizer to Farmers

The Governor of Cross River State, Sen. Bassey Edet Otu, has officially flagged off the South-South Zonal Renewed Hope Farm Input Support Programme (FISP), with the distribution of 80,640 bags of NPK fertilizer to 20,160 registered smallholder farmers across the South-South region.

The Governor, who was represented at the event by the Speaker of the Cross River State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Elvert Ayambem, said the initiative is the commitment of both the Federal Government and the Cross River State Government to strengthening food security, increasing agricultural productivity, and improving the livelihoods of farmers.

Speaking on behalf of Governor Otu during the flag-off ceremony held at the Cross River Agricultural Development Programme (CRADP), opposite Margaret Ekpo International Airport, Calabar, on Saturday, Rt. Hon. Ayambem noted that the intervention aligns with the administration’s People First Agenda, which places agriculture at the centre of economic transformation and rural prosperity.

Governor Otu commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the National Agricultural Development Fund (NADF) for the timely intervention, describing the programme as a practical demonstration of the Federal Government’s commitment to agricultural renewal, inclusive growth, and national food security.

According to the Governor, smallholder farmers remain the backbone of Nigeria’s agricultural economy, stressing that every intervention that directly reaches farmers is an investment in the nation’s future.

“Our farmers are central to our vision because when agriculture thrives, families earn more, communities prosper, young people find opportunities, and our economy grows stronger,” the Governor stated.

Governor Otu expressed appreciation to the National Agricultural Development Fund for choosing Cross River State to host the South-South zonal flag-off, noting that the gesture reflects the confidence reposed in the state and the progress recorded in repositioning agriculture as a key driver of economic growth.

Welcoming delegates from Akwa Ibom, Delta and Edo States, the Governor assured the Federal Government, development partners and participating states that Cross River would ensure strict implementation of the programme in line with approved guidelines through the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation Development.

He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to transparency, accountability and equity in the distribution process, insisting that farm inputs must reach genuine smallholder farmers for whom they are intended.

Governor Otu also warned against the diversion of agricultural inputs, emphasizing that every bag of fertilizer must get to the right beneficiaries in order to achieve the objectives of food price stabilization, increased productivity and rural economic stimulation.

Highlighting the state’s agricultural transformation agenda, the Governor disclosed that his administration is expanding opportunities across strategic value chains, including maize, rice and sorghum production, while promoting mechanized farming through the procurement of additional mini tractors for farmers’ cooperatives.

He further stated that the government would continue to improve farmers’ access to quality inputs and extension services, support commodity development and create an enabling environment for private sector investment in agriculture.

Governor Otu urged beneficiaries to make judicious use of the fertilizers, stressing that the success of the intervention should be measured not merely by the quantity distributed, but by improved harvests, increased incomes and enhanced food security.

The Governor thanked the National Agricultural Development Fund, the All Farmers Association of Nigeria (AFAN), development partners and other stakeholders for making the programme possible, assuring farmers of his administration’s continued support.

“Your success is our success, and your prosperity is central to the future we are building,” Governor Otu said.

ODEY LEADS YACHE DELEGATION TO SSDC, SEEKS ELECTRIFICATION, CRITICAL INFRASTRUCTURE DEVELOPMENT

The Cross River State Commissioner for Education, Senator Professor Stephen Odey, Esq., on Friday led a high-powered delegation of Yache Royal Fathers, political leaders, elites, and community stakeholders on a courtesy visit to the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of the South South Development Commission (SSDC), Miss Usoro Offiong Akpabio, in Calabar, seeking urgent intervention in the electrification of Yache Communities and other critical infrastructure needs.

The delegation, drawn from Yache Communities in Yala Local Government Area, used the visit to advocate strategic partnerships aimed at addressing decades of infrastructural deficits and accelerating socio-economic development in the area.

Speaking on behalf of the traditional institution, elders, political class, and the entire people of Yache, Professor Odey commended the Federal Government for establishing the South South Development Commission, describing the intervention agency as a visionary initiative designed to bridge infrastructural gaps and promote regional development across the South-South.

He noted that the visit reflected the collective desire of the people for inclusive growth, sustainable development, and equitable distribution of infrastructure within the region.

Highlighting the developmental challenges confronting Yache Communities, Senator Odey observed that despite the area’s vast agricultural potential and significant contributions to food production in Cross River State and neighbouring states, the communities have continued to grapple with decades of infrastructural deficits, particularly the absence of electricity, poor road networks, and inadequate access to potable water.

According to him, the lack of electricity has severely impacted economic activities, healthcare delivery, educational advancement, and overall quality of life in the communities.

“The absence of power has hindered agricultural processing, limited the growth of small and medium-scale enterprises, affected healthcare services, and constrained educational activities, while also contributing to rural-urban migration among our youths,” he stated.

He also pointed to the consistent electoral participation and support of the people for government, stressing the need for equitable infrastructural development to match the community’s contributions to the state’s political and economic landscape.

He, therefore, appealed to the SSDC to prioritise the electrification of Yache Communities through grid extension and alternative energy solutions, including solar mini-grids and other renewable energy options.

Assuring the Commission of the community’s full cooperation, the Commissioner pledged the support of the people in providing right-of-way, local labour, security, and community ownership necessary for the successful implementation and sustainability of the proposed projects.

Responding, the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of the SSDC, Miss Usoro Offiong Akpabio, commended Senator Professor Stephen Odey for his leadership and articulate presentation of the developmental needs of Yache Communities.

She acknowledged the concerns raised, particularly in the areas of electricity, roads, water supply, and agriculture, assuring the delegation that their requests would be carefully considered and integrated into the Commission’s regional development framework.

Miss Akpabio reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to collaborating with communities, governments, and development partners to deliver impactful projects that will improve living standards and stimulate economic growth across the South-South region.

Also speaking, the Executive Director, Communication and Environment, Hon. Joseph A. U., praised Professor Odey’s intellectual depth and statesmanship, describing him as a distinguished academic and exemplary leader.

In a vote of thanks, His Royal Highness, Chief Isaac Omaji, expressed appreciation to the SSDC leadership for granting the audience and giving thoughtful attention to the concerns of the people, expressing optimism that the engagement would translate into tangible development outcomes.

Santuscom launches Organo-Mineral Fertiliser to boost food security and farm productivity

Santuscom Agro Investment Company Limited and Santuscom Fertiliser have unveiled a new agricultural product, Santuscom Organo-Mineral Fertiliser, aimed at improving crop yields, enhancing soil fertility and supporting food security across Nigeria.

The product was officially launched at the weekend in Okuku, the commercial hub of Yala Local Government Area of Cross River State, in the presence of farmers, agricultural stakeholders, entrepreneurs and community leaders.

Speaking at the event, the Chief Executive Officer of the company, Chief Ofana Paul Santus, popularly known as Mr Ogoja Rice, expressed confidence that the new fertiliser would transform agricultural production in Cross River State and South South Geo-political zone of Nigeria and even beyond..

He said the introduction of Santuscom Organo-Mineral Fertiliser marks a significant step towards addressing the challenges of poor harvests and declining soil fertility faced by many farmers. According to him, the product has been carefully developed to provide balanced nutrition for crops while improving soil health for sustainable agricultural production.

Chief Santus explained that the fertiliser combines the benefits of organic and mineral nutrients, making it an effective solution for farmers seeking higher productivity and improved crop quality. He noted that the product is designed to enhance nutrient efficiency, promote healthy plant growth and increase resilience against adverse weather conditions.

He further stated that the fertiliser would help farmers reduce production costs over time by improving nutrient retention in the soil and reducing the need for excessive fertiliser application. The product, he added, also supports better water retention, thereby helping crops withstand periods of drought and irregular rainfall.

Agricultural experts have long advocated the use of organo-mineral fertilisers due to their ability to improve long-term soil fertility through the addition of organic matter while posing lower environmental risks compared to conventional synthetic fertilisers.

Industry reports indicate that global demand for organo-mineral fertilisers continues to grow as farmers increasingly adopt sustainable agricultural practices. Market analysts estimate that the global organo-mineral fertiliser market, valued at approximately $1.62 billion in 2024, is expected to reach $2.08 billion by 2032, driven by rising demand for improved agricultural productivity, environmentally friendly farming solutions and enhanced food security.

Stakeholders at the launch commended Santuscom Agro Investment Company Limited for investing in agricultural innovation and expressed optimism that the new fertiliser would contribute significantly to increased food production and economic growth within Cross River State and beyond.

The launch is expected to strengthen efforts towards sustainable agriculture, improve farmers' incomes and support the nation's drive for food sufficiency.
