USING RIVER BENUE WATERS FOR RECREATIONAL ACTIVITIES
Benue State has an abundance of inland waters. A significant proportion of the region, including much of the coast is designated for its environmental value, while most of the region is low-lying and prone to flooding and likely impacts of climate change.
Strategic links between river Benue and some of the major rivers in Nigeria is amazing and could create fantastic recreation environment for tourists. Nearly 45 percent of adult population now spend some of their leisure time enjoying water related recreation.
The most popular activities are walking, swimming and visits to the beach, boating, angling and other water recreation activities are increasing in popularity with adult population now participating regularly.
There has been a significant growth in water recreation (participation in coarse angling, open swimming, some canoe disciplines, sub-aqua and rowing, with indications that participation in motor boating will go well if facilities are available.
Notwithstanding the economic climate, participation in most water related recreation activities is expected to grow further in Benue State. This will be underpinned by continuing social change.
River Benue waters will not only provide the first major new build of a waterway for generations, but it will also fulfil a long ambition to link the waterways. It will also link a number of powered water sports venues.
Interestingly, it will add heavily to the IGR of Benue State if well managed as proposed by Association of Benue Entertainers (ABE) Worldwide.
