Law and Disorder in Los Angeles: A Case Study in Political Hypocrisy

By Oladigbo Olakekan | Lagos, Nigeria

Any nation that fails to uphold law and order risks eventual collapse. Human beings, by nature, are inclined to test limits it is only the presence of consequences that curbs such tendencies. This reality is being starkly illustrated in Los Angeles, where violent protests have escalated into full-blown riots, including attacks on ICE agents and law enforcement, the burning of vehicles, and the vandalism of federal property.

In response, President Trump, in coordination with Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, Homeland Security Secretary Christine, and the Department of Justice under Pam Bondi, deployed the National Guard to help restore order. This decision, however, has been met with strong opposition from California Democrats.

Governor Gavin Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass downplayed the violence, characterizing the protests as “peaceful” and warning that the National Guard’s presence would only inflame tensions. They criticized President Trump for intervening, suggesting his actions were politically motivated.

This response raises serious concerns about the current leadership in California. It's worth remembering that Gavin Newsom was once a top contender for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2024. His participation in high profile debates with Florida Governor Ron DeSantis highlighted his ambition. But if his leadership in this crisis is any indication, one must ask: Would he have shown the same passivity if this unrest had occurred in a red state like Florida or Texas?

The refusal to acknowledge the severity of the riots appears to be more about politics than public safety. The governor has even threatened legal action against the Trump administration over the National Guard deployment an effort that seems unlikely to succeed given the clear breakdown in public order and the documented assaults on law enforcement.

Leadership does not mean aligning with a political narrative at the expense of public safety. It is possible to condemn violent rioters while still opposing the federal government’s involvement but failing to do either is an abdication of duty. When the Los Angeles Police Department itself admits its officers were overwhelmed, the federal response becomes not just justifiable, but necessary.

This incident underscores a broader issue for the Democratic Party. Recent polls, even from traditionally liberal outlets like CNN, indicate growing public support for President Trump’s stance on law and order, particularly on immigration. Who, then, are the Democrats really representing?

The media’s role in downplaying the chaos also deserves scrutiny. A broadcast on MSNBC described people “having fun” watching cars burn. Such trivialization is deeply concerning in a country that prides itself on being a land of laws and order.

Even more disturbing were images of protesters waving foreign flags while burning the American flag. This act, in particular, is both ironic and insulting. Many of these individuals fled hardship in their home countries to find safety and opportunity in the United States. To then disrespect the very nation that gave them refuge is not only hypocritical it’s senseless.

If you hold another country's flag above America’s while enjoying the freedoms it provides, perhaps it’s time to reconsider where your loyalty lies.

Open Letter to Governor Gavin Newsom

Dear Governor Newsom,

I write to you not as an American citizen, but as a deeply concerned Nigerian observing recent events in your state with growing alarm. The violent attacks on ICE agents in Los Angeles have made headlines far beyond your borders. What is unfolding in California sends troubling signals to the international community not only about the safety of your cities but about the state of law and order in one of the most influential parts of the United States.

Reports suggest that some of these violent attacks against ICE agents who are lawfully caring out their duties to enforce Immigration laws.

I am particularly disturbed by the Democrats accounts indicating that the United States’ is a racist country and that President Trump and Border Czar Tom Homan is carrying out an illegal acts and blame for the ICE attack by these miscreants.
Lets not also forget that FBI under the leadership of Director Kash Patel and Department of Justice under AG Pam Bondi has reiterate that attacks on law enforcement agents will not be tolerated.

Nigeria has firsthand experience with terrorism and instability. We understand all too well how extremist groups infiltrate borders, weaponize disorder, and take advantage of weak enforcement. What happens in the United States does not stay within your borders. It reverberates across the world, especially in nations like ours where youth see the United States of America as a symbol of opportunity and order.

Governor Newsom, it is critical to ask: what message does California’s response or lack thereof send to the world? That federal agents can be attacked in broad daylight without swift and meaningful consequence? That lawlessness is tolerable if it serves a political narrative?

Illegal immigration is not a uniquely American issue. Every sovereign country must manage its borders. Encouraging lawful immigration is not in question but ignoring illegal entry, especially when it contributes to violence and insecurity, undermines your state’s credibility and the safety of your citizens.

With the National Guard now deployed by President Donald Trump, this is clearly a crisis moment and you should bear the immense responsibility of leading not only your state but influencing the moral and legal direction of the country. Should this situation continue to spiral, many around the world myself included will question whether you are prepared to take on the even greater responsibilities some say you seek in national office.

I also call on the Mayor of Los Angeles, Karen Bass and other local leaders to take this seriously. This is not just a domestic issue it’s an international one. The United States, once a model for governance and security, must not allow itself to descend into chaos under the watch of those entrusted with its protection.

Say what you will about President Trump many outside your borders saw in him a clarity of purpose regarding national security that is often lacking in today’s rhetoric. That clarity is urgently needed now.

Governor Newsom, this is a time to rise above politics and lead with boldness, principle, and a deep respect for the rule of law. The world is watching.

Respectfully,

Los Angeles Riots: America Cannot Afford to Be Soft on Unlawful Protests and Illegal Entry

In recent days, scenes emerging from California have stirred deep concern not just for what is unfolding on American streets, but for the messages being sent by those entrusted with public leadership. When individuals enter the United States illegally in pursuit of the American dream a dream so many across the world admire it is troubling to see some of these same individuals take to the streets, waving foreign flags, and participating in demonstrations that descend into lawlessness.

One is left to ask: why come to America only to disparage it or undermine its institutions? If such deep solidarity exists with other nations, why not choose those countries as destinations instead?

California has become a focal point of unrest, and the failure of Governor Gavin Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass to maintain law and order is disturbing. Rather than unequivocally condemning acts of violence against law enforcement, the destruction of government property, and the looting of businesses, these leaders have instead shown sympathy toward the protesters. This is not responsible governance it is a dangerous political gamble.

President Donald Trump was elected on clear promises, particularly on immigration and national security. He vowed to restore law and order, to remove violent criminals and those residing illegally in the country, and to protect the integrity of American borders. His mandate came from millions who voted for a safer and stronger nation. Despite a contentious media landscape, his stance resonates with many Americans who feel their cities are being overtaken by chaos under the guise of activism.

The mainstream media networks such as CNN, MSNBC, ABC, NBC, and CBC have consistently offered narratives that obscure the reality on the ground. They frame the deployment of the National Guard as an overreach, while downplaying footage and firsthand accounts that clearly show riots, not peaceful protests.

Governor Newsom’s suggestion that the situation does not warrant federal intervention is not only tone deaf, it is laughable. A peaceful protest does not involve the assault of ICE agents or the destruction of public infrastructure. If California’s leaders believe they can govern independently of federal authority, perhaps they should begin discussing secession. But as long as California remains part of the United States, the federal government has not just the right but the duty to intervene when state officials fail to act.

The bottom line is clear: if someone is in the country illegally and finds America unworthy, the honorable thing is to return to their home country. The United States cannot and should not be a sanctuary for those who do not respect its laws or its values.

Let it be knownregardless of political affiliation that America remains a beacon of hope for millions. The American dream is still alive, but it must be protected. Those who truly love the country should support measures that uphold its laws and defend its sovereignty.

Stand with law enforcement. Stand with national integrity. And yes, stand with President Trump.

It’s my birthday today. To God be the Glory.
In the last 365 days, one thing is certain I’ve been broke, hungry, sad, depressed, oppressed, sick, and betrayed.
Yet, at the same time, I’ve published two books and am currently working on my third. I earned my CIPM certification and successfully conducted the NGIJ election.
Donald J. Trump went from 34 indictment, Two assassination attempt, almost going to jail to becoming the 47th President of the United States. Pete Hegseth is now SecDef. Even though Arsenal is yet to win the EPL or clinch the Champions League trophy, hope remains.
In all, To God be the Glory.
As for the next 365 days no targets, no goals. Just faith, more sleep and more food and food and food and food.
To God be the Glory. We go again.

An Open Letter to Palki Sharma, Managing Editor, Firstpost

Dear Ms. Palki S Upadhyay Sharma,

Greetings from Lagos, Nigeria.

I recently watched the Wednesday edition of Vintage, where you conducted a report critiquing the United States Armed Forces and the way American media handled the shortcomings of the Pentagon particularly the overhyped narrative around their fighter jets. You pointed out how, instead of focusing on their own military's operational failures, American media chose to spotlight India’s Operation Sindoor and its shortcomings.

Your commentary was passionate, and I respect your right as a journalist to offer critical insights. However, I believe some balance and objectivity were missing, especially considering Firstpost’s growing alignment with the views of the Indian government. Many observers, myself included, have noticed a shift in your platform, which now seems to function more like state-aligned media than an independent journalistic outlet.

It is sad to see Firstpost extensively cover perceived Western hypocrisies, yet remain silent on internal challenges within India. For example, there has been little to no reportorial focus on the rising number of Indian youths involved in cybercrime, fake call centers, and counterfeit pharmaceutical exports. These issues not only tarnish India’s global image but also strain international relations yet they receive minimal attention from your platform.

You highlighted the performance of the U.S. F-35 fighter jet, even noting reports that it was nearly brought down by Houthi rebels. Despite the U.S. portraying the F-35 as a top-tier aircraft and pushing its sale to India, American media allegedly stayed silent on these vulnerabilities. In contrast, the media was quick to scrutinize India’s setbacks in Operation Sindoor. That double standard is certainly worth pointing out—but so are India's own military and diplomatic challenges.

Your disappointment over Operation Sindoor not being a "complete success" and your belief that President Trump should have unequivocally backed India against Pakistan suggests a level of expectation that may blur the line between journalism and nationalism.
