✪ VIOLENCE WORSENS with killings in IMO, ENUGU; panic in UMUAHIA

▷Despite the resolution by the South East Governors to contain the violence and killings in the region, the issues have continued unabated.

Pandemonium broke out at the Police Divisional Headquarters, Umulokpa, in Uzo-Uwani Local Government Area of Enugu State following an attack by yet-to-be-identified gunmen on Saturday.

Similarly, a lifeless body of a young man identified as Stephen Ajah, was yesterday, discovered along Ozalla/Agbani Road in Nkanu West Local Government Area of Enugu State.

Also yesterday, the Imo State government said one of the two military officers killed in last Friday’s clash in Izombe community between members of the gang of the deceased Obele and the military officers was an indigene of Imo State.

Equally, there was tension in Umuahia, the Abia State capital following invasion by suspected hoodlums enforcing the sit -at -home order yesterday.

In a related development, the leader and protagonist of Biafra Independence Movement, BIM, Chief Ralph Uwazuruike, has cried out over the raid of the group’s regional office at Umuaka, Njaba local government area of Imo State by suspected officials of the Nigerian Navy.

"CRIMENEWS" gathered that the gunmen stormed the police division at about 5pm in their numbers and started shooting sporadically, damaging the facility in the process.

A resident of the area who spoke on condition of anonymity said that policemen, on sighting the gunmen scampered for safety, abandoning the division in the process.

Vanguard equally gathered that the unknown gunmen abducted a police woman who was on duty at the time of the attack and took her to an unknown destination.

Though no life was lost, it was learnt that having scared the policemen away, the hoodlums proceeded to the armoury compartment of the police division where they carted away arms.

Confirming the incident, the spokesperson of Enugu State Police Command, Daniel Ndukwe, said the State Commissioner of Police, Abubakar Lawal, had directed the Criminal Investigation Department, CID, of the command to intensity efforts to locate the abducted female cop.

Ndukwe, in a statement made available to Vanguard added that the Commissioner of Police has equally ordered full scale investigation into the attack, assuring that the perpetrators would be arrested and prosecuted.

Part of the statement read: “The Commissioner of Police, Enugu State Command, CP Abubakar Lawal, has ordered the State CID and tactical teams of the Command to intensify ongoing investigative efforts to locate a missing female personnel and fish out the yet-to-be identified hoodlums, who in their numbers attacked and vandalized vehicles and other items at Umulokpa Police Divisional Headquarters in Uzo-Uwani LGA, in the evening hours of 09/10/2021.

“He gave this order after leading a team of Senior Police Officers and Commanders of the Command’s tactical/operational teams to the scene.

“Meanwhile, the general public, particularly citizens of the State, have been enjoined to assist the Command with credible information and/or intelligence that will lead to the location of the said personnel and arrest of the assailants.”

▷IMO INDIGENE military officer killed in Izombe clash —Govt

The Imo State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Declan Emelumba, disclosed this to newsmen in Owerri while sympathising with the victims of the ugly incident and those whose houses were burnt.

He said the military officers came on the invitation of the villagers who placed a distress call across to the military over a security threat allegedly caused by Obele and his loyalists and that when the military wanted to arrest Obele, he resisted and engaged the military with his gun.

In the process, Obele was killed and his men came for attack and killed two military officers, collected their arms and ammunition, stripped them of their uniform and clubbed them to death.

He added that the suspect that was shot dead by the military was an escapee from the Owerri Correctional Center during the jailbreak.

Emelumba said: “Whenever loss of lives is involved, it calls for sober mood. We want to sympathise with the families of those who lost their lives and houses were burnt. It is so unfortunate one of the military guys that was killed was an indigene of Imo State.

“According to the security report, the 80 per cent of the planning that led to the attack of the Owerri Correctional Center took place in the Oguta area. The suspect according to the security report was an escapee of the Owerri correctional centre during the time of jailbreak.”

“It is good to know this, it was the villagers who invited the military because of the security threat from this suspect that was killed and on seeing the military he engaged the military with his gun while they were trying to arrest him and in the process, he was killed.

BOMBING of Magistrate court: Police moves after bandits in IMO

The Imo State Police Command, yesterday, said it has ordered officers to move to the troubled areas of the Oru West Local Government of Imo State where a magistrate court was set ablaze with a petrol bomb last Monday by hoodlums.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Micheal Abattam, confirmed this to Vanguard in Owerri.

The command said the officers would be collaborating with the members of the community to apprehend the perpetrators of the attack.

According to the Police, “Investigation has commenced and the Police Commissioner has sent officers to the area to apprehend the attackers.”

When asked what the Police have done regarding the information that the hoodlums still parade in the night, he said: “We want to say this, if there is any problem, it is good to intimate the police so that we will know the next line of action to tackle such incident. Indigenes can as well give us this information.

They cannot be staying in isolation. Policing is not for Police alone; it is a collective thing. There is no way a police officer will turn into a magician to know what is happening in a particular place without you giving him the information.

“It is better you inform the Police. We will work together, let there be synergy and get good results. If you don’t tell the Police what is happening, everybody will feel all is well. We need to know where to police. It is not good we concentrate in a place and it is happening in another place.”

POLICEMAN STABS MOTORIST In IMO, Flees With Another Driver At Gunpoint

The policeman was one of those security details es**rting a Prado tinted Sports Utility Vehicle, when the event happened.

A young man, Ekeh Franklyn Nzubechukwu, has been stabbed by an officer attached to the Nigerian Police Special Force at Edede by Opara Anozie Street in Owerri, Imo State.

"CrimeNews"Reporters learnt that the policeman was one of those security details es**rting a Prado tinted Sports Utility Vehicle, when the event happened.

The policeman was said to have ordered all drivers to start reversing their cars while trying to maneuver the traffic.

He then used the butt of the gun to hit the victim's car.

Franklyn was however stabbed in the neck by the officer, when he argued that two cars were behind him and that he couldn't move back.

The victim explained that the officer threatened to shoot his boss when he was about to video the incident, while the policemen fled the scene.

He said the officer stopped a passenger bus at a gunpoint and discharged the passengers while escaping with the driver.

He said "There was a lot of traffic in Owerri; so the policeman that stabbed me was the one with a Prado tinted SUV probably as an es**rt or something.

"They were trying to maneuver the traffic and he told all drivers to start reversing backwards which we did as instructed by him but mine got to a point whereby I could no longer go back because of the two cars that were at my back.

"When he came to me, he used the head of his gun to hit the car window and I was forced to whine down and he started whipping me.

It got to a point where his whips entered my eyes and I came out of the car to ask him if he was not seeing the two cars that were at my back and he brought out his dagger and stabbed me the first time but the cloth I was putting on had a metal pendant on it so it didn’t pierce through but just after that he stabbed me again.

“When I called my boss and he came around and tried filming the officer and getting hold of him, he cocked his gun and almost shot my boss on the leg and ran away.

"The police man cleared a full load of public bus, asked all the whole passengers to get down and ran away with the driver.”

POLICE Disagree As Family Says Late OAU MBA Student Was Fifth Person Killed In Oduduwa University Owner’s Hotel

It was the confessional statement of the lady staff member in the hotel, Adesola Tobiloba that led to the arrest of five others.

Two relations of the late Master of Business Administration student of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Timothy Oludare have spoken on how the remains of the deceased were recovered from a shallow grave.

They said the deceased was found buried on the premises of Hilton Hotels and Resorts, owned by Dr Rahman Adedoyin, who also owns Oduduwa University.

One of the relations, a cousin of the deceased, Mr Gbade Adegoke said Dr Adedoyin threatened to arrest Timothy’s brother, Gbade that after alleging that he constituted a nuisance to his hotel when the family was looking for him (Timothy) in the hotel.

Ogunlana said it was the family who contacted the Inspector General of Police, Usman Baba, which led the police chief to call Osun State Commissioner of Police, Olawole Olokode, before the death of his cousin was uncovered.

It was the confessional statement of the lady staff member in the hotel, Adesola Tobiloba that led to the arrest of five others. The lady confessed that Manager 4 — the Alfa (Islamic cleric) — was always around any time they wanted to perform that act of killing. That he was in charge of the (murder) act.

When the Alfa came, he wanted to exonerate himself. He said he left Ife on the 5th (of November). Police asked him where he went and he said he left for Ejigbo. And the police were able to track Timothy's line to Ejigbo. It was Alfa’s confessional statement that led to where Timothy was buried.

We noticed some kind of conspiracy on the part of the police. Alfa confessed that Timothy was not the first person they murdered this year. He was the fifth person. They were saying they knocked on the door and when it was not opened, they used the spare key to open it and found him dead. They now said they buried him. The police asked if they reported it, they said no.

“It was when we noticed the manner by which the police were carrying out the job that we began to talk to the media. They were trying to cover up,” Ogunlana said.

Speaking on the part played by the chairman of the hotel, Ogunlana alleged, “On Wednesday, when the brother of the deceased, Gbade brought the receipts of previous lodgings, the police went there with him and met the owner there. The owner said the fact that he (Timothy) came there the previous week did not mean he came there the following week. He said they didn’t see him that week. The brother called me and said ‘I’m in front of the owner of the hotel, they said he is a king, they said he is a prince. He is threatening to arrest me that I’m asking about the whereabouts of my brother.’

“That owner (Adedoyin) was threatening to arrest Timothy’s brother. He said he was constituting a nuisance to the hotel. Throughout that week, the owner was there. He was coming to that hotel.

The elders in our family called the Inspector-General of Police in Abuja before all these things started to come out. How they discovered his co**se, the police seemed to have known. They asked us if we could identify the co**se of the person we were looking for, we said yes. They brought out a shovel, so they dug the ground and brought out a carton according to them.

“They discovered in the carton that the deceased was wrapped with the duvet from the hotel. When they unwrapped it, they discovered it was the person that was missing. They didn’t unwrap him completely; they asked that he should be taken to the mortuary.

“The police were now reporting that the carton was not really big, he was squeezed. It was there they discovered that parts of the body had been mutilated and they did not allow any member of the family to see beyond the part they revealed. They just put it in the morgue there. Then, they came back, and ordered the arrest of the owner of the hotel.”

Another relative who spoke to "CrimeNews" on condition of anonymity, said, “They have been able to arrest all the suspects, but the bad news is my brother has been brutally murdered, his body part mutilated/removed in what looks like a ritual killing. And he was buried in a shallow grave near the hotel he lodged in Ile-Ife.

“The intriguing part of the story is that he was not kidnapped from the airport as earlier insinuated; he was killed in the hotel where he lodged. The Hilton and Resorts Hotel where he lodged belongs to Mr Rahman Adedoyin (Maye of Ife), the owner of Oduduwa University in Ile-Ife.

Initially, when we approached the hotel to ask about him, they denied that he was their guest for the weekend. The owner of the hotel (Adedoyin) vehemently dismissed Timothy. "However, upon police investigation, the Police established that Timothy paid for the hotel and lodged there for the night. Also, they located his mutilated co**se wrapped in a blood-soaked blanket/bed sheet belonging to the hotel and buried in a shallow grave near the hotel.”

"CrimeNews" Reporters contacted Osun Police Command spokesperson, Yemisi Opalola, and she said, "Nobody told us that. We were told that the hotel was just bought not even up to two years ago. We were still in Ife yesterday carrying out investigation on the case till 1 am today. And from our findings, the hotel was just established not up to two years. So, how can people be dying like five or six persons within two years and people will still be going there?

"And for the people that are working there that know they are already in problem, that we have arrested; from their confession, they said people were carrying rumours. So one of the staff members there that has been working with them for long has not said nothing of such."

STUDENT Critic Of Lagos University Assassinated Amid Tussle With School, Another Shot Activist In A Coma

Nurudeen died on Wednesday after being shot

It was learnt that the disciplinary panel had been postponing the sitting for unknown reasons since January 2020.

A student activist at the Lagos State University, Yusuf Nurudeen has been killed by unknown gunmen hours after appearing before the school's disciplinary committee over alleged admission racketeering and unlawful possession of university documents.

Similarly, a staff-activist in the school who had openly expressed support for Nurudeen was also shot in the back and said to be in a coma, Campus Trackers reports.

It was learnt that the disciplinary panel had been postponing the sitting for unknown reasons since January 2020.

Before his assassination, Nurudeen, a leader in the Education Rights Campaign (ERC), described the probe as an attempt to frame him for being an outspoken opposition to the management of the school, especially regarding the administration's anti-student and anti-worker policies.

“As everyone would recall, there has been an attempt to frame me up on a case of admission racketeering. This is retribution for my principled opposition to the anti-student and anti-worker policies of the University administration in my capacity as a leading member of the Education Rights Campaign (ERC) and a renowned student activist on campus,” Nurudeen wrote in a press release.

ERC is a platform of activists organised on Nigerian campuses to campaign for free education.

His arrest has been described as contentious as it was carried out by officers of the State Security Service (SSS), also known as the Department of State Services (DSS) in a Gestapo-like manner.

Several organisations and unions, including the Socialist Workers’ League and the Lagos State University Student Union, condemned Nurudeen's arrest, describing it as excessive.

Nurudeen has been described as a passionate advocate against the anti-student" and "anti-worker" policies of the school with the way he was not afraid to criticise the school management.

He was also said to have got married six months before his death, leaving behind a three-month-old child.

EXCLUSIVE: Nigerian Businessman Commits Su***de Inside Kuje Prison

The businessman was so dejected about his conviction that he decided to terminate his life inside the prison.

A 43-year-old businessman, Obinna Echianu, has committed su***de inside the Kuje Correctional Centre (Kuje Prison) in Abuja.

Reporters gathered that Echianu was in 2020 sentenced to death for killing an Uber driver identified as Edwin Ali in Abuja.

However, his co-defendant, Everly Nnorom was discharged and acquitted.

Echianu was arraigned along with 27-year-old Nnorom, a student, by the police on five counts bordering on armed robbery, unlawful possession of fi****ms, and culpable homicide.

The prosecutor, Donatus Abah had told the court that the businessman, from Abia State and Nnorom, from Imo State on December 25, 2016, conspired to commit the offence of armed robbery and culpable homicide, punishable with death.

He said the duo, while armed with a Revolver Pistol and 33 live ammunition (bullets), robbed one Inalegwu Edwin Ali of his Nissan Almera car and one mobile phone at Gosa pedestrian bridge, Airport Road, Abuja.

He said after both of them successfully robbed Ali, Echianu intentionally shot him in the head, causing his death.

During the weekend that the businessman was so dejected about his conviction that he decided to terminate his life inside the prison.

The source said, “He went into the bathroom in his cell and hanged himself. His lifeless body was discovered dangling from a rope around his neck. It is not clear what triggered this last act.

“However, it raises questions about the condition of the prison system in Nigeria. Why could a person on death row have easy access to a means of hanging himself? Also, what is the state of healthcare in the prisons, especially for inmates with mental health issues?

It is is now too late for anyone to know what would have been the outcome of his appeal. Death of the accused ends every criminal trial.”

EX-BOKO HARAM fighters protest in transit camp

Former Boko Haram fighters who have surrendered to the Nigerian government and are kept at various camps within Maiduguri are protesting their long stay in the camps.

The protesting ex-fighters are those kept at the Maiduguri transit camp within the metropolis. This protest, according to sources is the fourth time the ex-fighters are protesting on their prolonged stay in confinement.

According to a source among the security personnel guarding the camp, the ex-fighters demanded that the government either release them into society or find a way to engage them as they are said to be tired of being idle for months in the camp.

The former Boko Haram fighters said they have been kept in the camp for about four months without doing anything. They said they have been separated from their wives – with some having three, four wives.

During the protest, the surrendered terrorists destroyed public infrastructures in the camp, a source disclosed to The PUNCH on Thursday.

According to the same source, some of the former terrorists housed in other camps within the town are already escaping into society without the permission of the authorities.

Some of them in other camps are escaping from the camp. They are running out of the camps after getting tired of being in the camp without doing anything and the government has done nothing to stop the escape,” the source noted.

It would be recalled that since the clash between factions of the terrorist groups led to the death of a factional leader, Abubakar Shekau some months ago, the former fighters, their wives and children, came out of the bush and surrendered to the Nigerian Government in their thousands and have been kept in different camps within Maiduguri after profiling them by the Nigerian military.Since their surrender, the government has been feeding them and giving them N10,000 as allowances every month. On the latest protest, the ex-fighters were being given some of these basic necessities but some of them did not get the items as such they began to protest leading to chaos in the camp. This is besides the phones, clothing and other basic amenities that are made available to them in the camps,” another source within the security circle in Maiduguri

However, the Commissioner of Women Affairs in Borno State, Hajiya Zuwaira Gambo, while reacting to the incident dismissed the story as false, saying nothing of such nature ever happened in the transit camp which is also known as Hajj camp.

“You know I have been out of town for some time, so when I went to the camp today, the former fighters got excited when they saw me and started jumping in jubilation chanting ‘mama mama mama’ and nothing more.

They didn’t destroy any government property and they did not revolt or protest in any way,” Zuwaira Gambo stated.

❂ Lekki PANEL report: Lai Mohammed out of Nigeria, to respond soon, says spokesman

▷Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, is currently out of Nigeria on an official assignment and will soon react to the report of the Lagos State Judicial Panel of Inquiry on Restitution for Victims of SARS Related Abuses and other matters, the minister’s spokesman, Segun Adeyemi, has said.

Adeyemi stated this on Thursday in a text response sent to our correspondent who inquired about the reaction of the minister on the panel’s findings.

The minister’s spokesman, however, did not disclose the country his principal is in at the moment.

Though “out of the country”, Adeyemi issued a statement on Thursday hailing the United States for removing Nigeria from the list of religious violators.

The office of the minister has, however, kept mum three days after the panel’s report on the Lekki incident of October 20, 2020 leaked to the public.

Mohammed, 69, has been in the eye of the storm since Monday, November 15, 2021, when the Justice Doris Okuwobi-led panel submitted its report to the Lagos State Government, noting that at least nine persons were confirmed dead at the Lekki toll plaza when soldiers stormed the tollgate to disperse EndSARS protesters on October 20, 2020.

❂ BREAKING: Nigeria Football Federation Reluctant To Sack Super Eagles Coach, Rohr Over N820million Payoff Contract

▷On Thursday morning, news of the German's sacking by the NFF made the rounds, sparking diverse reactions among Nigerians.

Coach of Nigeria's Super Eagles, Gernot Rohr, will receive a hefty compensation of $2 million (approximately N822 million) if sacked by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).

However, the football body, through its spokesperson, Ademola Olajire, swiftly moved to deny the news.

According to findings by SaharaReporters, the NFF is desperately searching for a clever way to ease Rohr out without having to pay the $2 million compensation clause in his contract and other financial entitlements he will be due.

In May 2020, Rohr signed a contract extension to keep him in charge of the Super Eagles until after the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar with the hefty payout clause.

The coach, who earns around $55,000 monthly, is paid partly by some of the NFF's sponsors including Aieto Insurance and other prominent companies.

The sponsors are said to have grown frustrated by the team's poor displays in recent times and have been pushing for Rohr's dismissal.

Last month, the Central African Republic defeated the Super Eagles in Lagos during the recently concluded FIFA World Cup qualifiers, drawing criticisms from a large section of football fans across Nigeria.

The climax of that anger against Rohr and the poor displays of the team came in the last two matches of the qualifiers against Liberia and Cape Verde where the Eagles struggled to grind out the needed result to qualify for the play-offs.

A source in the NFF told SaharaReporters on Thursday that paying Rohr's compensation if he were to be sacked was a big deal at the moment as the football federation doesn't have such funds.

"The money he will be paid if sacked is huge, that is a major factor delaying his dismissal. If he resigns, the burden will be lessened," the source said.

Condemning the huge compensation inserted into the German's contract, former Super Eagles attacker, Daniel Amokachi, said the move was a big mistake by the NFF.

You put a $2 million clause on a coach that has never won anything. A coach that came from Burkina Faso to Tunisia then to Nigeria and you put a $2 million clause, that’s the first I’m hearing such.

“For a coach that has not done anything, not achieved anything and you put a $2 million clause? There’s a lot of failure in that. I’ll not rate them (NFF) out of 10, but all these things I’ve broken down will tell anybody with commonsense where I’m coming from,” he said.

Rohr was appointed head coach of the Super Eagles in August 2016 and led the team to a third-place finish at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations.

He had previously coached Burkina Faso and Tunisia before his appointment by Nigeria.

He took over from former Super Eagles midfielder, Sunday Oliseh, who left the job months after his appointment following a disagreement with the NFF.

✪ NIGERIA Out, China, Russia, Others Make US Govt Religious Violators’ List

The United States has removed Nigeria from its list of countries that engaged in or tolerate ‘systematic, ongoing, and egregious violations of religious freedom.”

CRIMENEWS reports that the US Govt have now blacklisted Russia, China and eight other countries as religious freedom violators.

This was made known in a statement on Wednesday titled, ‘Religious Freedom Designations’, by the US Secretary of State Antony Blinken.

Blinken said, “The United States will not waiver in its commitment to advocate for freedom of religion or belief for all and in every country. In far too many places around the world, we continue to see governments harass, arrest, threaten, jail, and kill individuals simply for seeking to live their lives in accordance with their beliefs. This Administration is committed to supporting every individual’s right to freedom of religion or belief, including by confronting and combating violators and abusers of this human right.

Each year the Secretary of State has the responsibility to identify governments and non-state actors, who, because of their religious freedom violations, merit designation under the International Religious Freedom Act.

“I am designating Burma, the People’s Republic of China, Eritrea, Iran, the DPRK, Pakistan, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Tajikistan, and Turkmenistan as Countries of Particular Concern for having engaged in or tolerated “systematic, ongoing, and egregious violations of religious freedom.

“I am also placing Algeria, Comoros, Cuba, and Nicaragua on a Special Watch List for governments that have engaged in or tolerated “severe violations of religious freedom.

Finally, I am designating al-Shabab, Boko Haram, Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, the Houthis, ISIS, ISIS-Greater Sahara, ISIS-West Africa, Jamaat Nasr al-Islam wal-Muslimin, and the Taliban as Entities of Particular Concern.

“The challenges to religious freedom in the world today are structural, systemic, and deeply entrenched. They exist in every country. They demand sustained global commitment from all who are unwilling to accept hatred, intolerance, and persecution as the status quo. They require the international community’s urgent attention.

We will continue to press all governments to remedy shortcomings in their laws and practices, and to promote accountability for those responsible for abuses. The United States remains committed to working with governments, civil society organizations, and members of religious communities to advance religious freedom around the world and address the plight of individuals and communities facing abuse, harassment, and discrimination on account of what they believe, or what they do not believe.”

Recall that the US had in 2020 placed Nigeria and six other countries on its special watch list of states that had engaged in or tolerated the severe violation of religious freedom.

Katsina POLICE repel bandits’ attack, rescue 11 victims, recover 38 cows

The Katsina Police Command says it has repelled an attack by bandits on Gidan Duka village, in Kankara Local Government Area (LGA) of the state, during which it rescued 11 kidnap victims in Safana.

SP Gambo Isah, the command’s spokesperson who disclosed this in a statement issued to newsmen, on Sunday, in Katsina, said 38 cows and 11 sheep were also recovered.

“Today, Nov. 14, 2021 bandits in their numbers, armed with AK-47 rifles attacked Gidan Duka village, Kankara LGA of Katsina state, and rustled an unspecified number of domestic animals.

“The DPO Kankara and his team swiftly responded to the distress call and chased after the hoodlums.

“The team met the bandits at Danmarabu village and engaged them in a firefight. The bandits escaped into the forest, abandoning all the rustled animals.

The team also recovered an operational motorcycle belonging to the bandits; while the investigation is ongoing.” Isah disclosed.

He similarly said that based on credible intelligence, the Command succeeded in rescuing 11 kidnapped victims from Sabon Garin Safana, explaining that “the victims were rescued from a bandits’ hideout, on the outskirts of Tsaskiya village, in Safana LGA of the state.

“It may be recalled that bandits attacked Sabon Garin Safana village on Nov. 12, 2021, and kidnapped 11 of the villagers.

“The victims were taken to Dutsinma General Hospital for medical examination/treatment and have already been reunited with their respective families”, according to Isah.

Meanwhile, efforts are in top gear with a view to arresting the perpetrators of the crime, while the investigation is ongoing, the police spokesman added.
