NIGERIAN TEACHER: A RELEGATED & DENIGRATED FOUNTAIN OF THE NATION

In the land where dreams dance with hope,
There stands a fountain, teachers' scope.
Nigerian educators, their hearts aflame,
Guiding minds, nurturing future's name.

They pour knowledge like a gentle stream,
Quenching thirsts, igniting each gleam.
From humble shores, they rise each day,
With wisdom's gifts, they light the way.

Yet, society turns a blind eye,
To this fountain, where brilliance lies.
Neglected, abandoned, like a forgotten song,
Teachers toil, their spirits strong.

Oh, the nation drinks from their sacred well,
Drawing strength, tales of progress they tell.
But society, oh callous society,
Treats this fountain with disdain and piety.

Underpaid, underappreciated, the plight they bear,
Their hearts burdened, yet they persevere.
For the love of knowledge, they fight the fight,
Shaping minds, chasing visions bright.

Educators, warriors of the classroom's realm,
Their passion, a force at the helm.
They sow seeds of wisdom, nurture growth,
Yet society's disregard stings them both.

Let us rise, as a united voice,
To honor these pillars, our noble choice.
Let the fountain flow, with respect and care,
For our nation's future, they steadfastly bear.

Embrace the teachers, their worth reclaim,
Celebrate the fountain, ignite its flame.
For Nigerian educators, our nation's pride,
Shall forever be the well from which we stride.

Today's topic:

Would Rather V would Prefer

Would rather and would prefer are used in English grammar to express specific preferences.

When we speak about a specific preference, 'would rather' and 'would prefer' have the same meaning, the same grammatical function/implications and can be used interchangeably.

Examples:

1: I would rather eat beans porridge this morning.

2: I would prefer to eat beans porridge this morning.

3: I would rather drive

4: I would prefer to drive

Note that when 'would prefer' is used, it takes the infinitive 'to' before the main verb of the sentence.

Would rather and would prefer are usually abbreviated as follows:

1: I 'd rather eat rice and beans for breakfast today.

2: I 'd prefer to eat rice and beans for breakfast today.

In the negative sense, 'would rather' and 'would prefer' are used with the negative infinitive 'NOT' before the main verb of the sentence.

Examples:

1: I would rather NOT drink beer today

2: I would prefer NOT to drink beer today.

3: I 'd rather NOT drink beer today.

4: I 'd prefer NOT to drink beer today.

More on the uses of 'would rather' and 'Would prefer' to come in our next lesson.

Today's Lesson Topic:

Correct uses of 'will and 'would'

'Will' and 'would' are auxiliary verbs. 'Will' is a present - tense auxiliary verb while 'would' is the past - tense form of will.

Uses of will:

The verb - will - is mostly used in English Grammar to express:

1: Beliefs about the present or the future.

Examples:

i. Ushie will be in the gym now (present)

ii. We will have to take a cab else we will be late to school today

2: To talk about what we want to do or are willing to do.

Examples:

i. I will see you tomorrow

ii. Ask Shade, perhaps she will lend you some money for the trip

3: To make promises, offers or requests. Examples:

i. I will give you money for your soap tomorrow

ii. I will bring some goodies for you when coming back

Use of would:

As I said earlier, 'would' is the past-tense of 'will'. 'Would', as the past-tense of 'will', is often used to

1: describe past beliefs about the future.

Examples:

i. I thought we would be late to school, so we would have to take a cab.

2: Talk about what we wanted to do or were willing to do.

Examples:

i. I would have gone with them except that the vehicle wouldn't contain all of us.

ii. We would not (wouldn't) have been late, so we wouldn't have taken the cab

3: To make polite requests.

Note that in making polite request, both 'will'and'would' can be used and would be correct grammatically.

Examples:

ia. Will you help me with that, please?

ib. Would you help me with that, please?

iia. Would you, please, help me with that?

Hope you get value from this post.

Next,we shall talk about the correct use of:

'Would rather' and 'Would prefer'
