Day 3 in Ghana, we visited the Cape coast slave castle. I cried throughout the tour.
I have read about the transatlantic slave trade in books. I have heard stories about how Africans were captured, separated from their families, taken away from their homes and shipped across the ocean.
But standing inside Cape coast castle was very emotional.
I walked through the same walls where people were imprisoned. I stood in rooms where men and women were kept in darkness, with barely enough space to breathe. I saw the dungeons where human beings were treated like they were worth nothing. I saw the ocean where they were thrown into if there was no life in them. It was scary to see
These were people just like us. They had mothers, fathers, children, dreams, families, lives they never got to return to.
I kept thinking about what it must have felt like to be taken away from everything you knew, not knowing if you would ever see your loved ones again.
I just stood there quietly, looking around, and I couldn’t even find the right word. A lot was hidden inside this castle.
This is one history I will never forget.
